Welcome back
Welcome back to Term 4 at Salt Ash Public School. I trust that everyone had a safe
and enjoyable holiday period. We are ready to begin an exciting term to finish off
the 2019 school year. Term 4 is already shaping up to be full of great, but busy,
learning opportunities. Please refer to the calendar each week in the newsletter as
new events are added.
Community PBL
Congratulations to our latest Community PBL awardees, Maddaline Logan and Jack Moyle. Maddaline received her award for “demonstrating leadership skills at Hunter River High School’s Showcase Performance during the finale by organising a number of younger students safely into position on the stage.” Jack received his for “consistently following our school PBL values of being a positive, respectful and safe learner in all settings. Term 3 Rewards Day
Congratulations to all of the students who participated in our Term 3 Rewards Day for consistently being positive,
respectful and safe learners. Students enjoyed a visit to SAPS Cinemas and were treated to a movie and a bucket
of popcorn. All students are now working towards attending this term’s Rewards Day. Every student begins with a
fresh start each term. If a student attends Reflection Room five times or more this term they will be ineligible to
attend Rewards Day.
Market Day
Congratulations to Stage 3 for planning and the smooth running of our first ever Market Day last term. The stalls
were all very well organised and the entire school had such an amazing time visiting each stall or activity.
Congratulations on raising an enormous $640.90!!!
Grandparents Day
This year we will celebrate our fabulous Grandparents this Friday 25th October. Each class will perform for our
Grandparents at an assembly commencing at 11:45am. Grandparents will then be invited to visit their
grandchild’s classroom. Our Year 6 students will also host a cake stall for Grandparents and students to enjoy.
Our Grandparent celebrations will cease at 1pm in order for students to prepare for the Musica Viva perfor-
mance. Please remember to return Musica Viva notes and money as soon as possible.
Week 2 Assembly
Due to our special Grandparent’s Day celebrations there will not be a normal Friday morning assembly this week.
Life Education
The Life Education van will visit SAPS next week. Each class will attend a lesson in the Life Education van and visit
Healthy Harold who will teach lessons based on the PDHPE syllabus. Topics covered are tailored to each stage
level and include subjects around making decisions, healthy bodies, friendships and drug education. Life
Education is part of our curriculum and therefore all students are expected to attend. This experience is one that
students will remember for a very long time, particularly the resources Life Education has available to them.
Money and notes are due by Friday 25th October.
Student Achievements
During the holidays Aleisha Hockey competed in the State Gymnastics competition. Her Hunter team came 5th
overall and Aleisha was awarded 2nd place in the State earning herself a silver medal. What a fabulous
achievement!

Improving Attendance Pilot Program
Our school has been selected to take part in a pilot program targeting attendance improvement. The program has
been developed by the Department of Education and the NSW Behavioural Insights Unit. The intervention targets
parental behaviours and is designed to help parents engage with their child’s learning. This involves all parents
receiving a weekly text message and a letter for those students whose attendance is less than 95%. At this stage
the program is only designed to connect with our kindergarten parents.
Aussie Hoops
This week, Aussie Hoops began their four week program at Salt Ash Public School. The instructors take each class
on a Thursday and assist students in gaining skills and confidence not only in basketball, but with coordination,
balance and many other gross motor skills. The cost of this program was covered by the school and a Sporting
Schools grant. The remaining three sessions will take place on Thursdays of week 2, 4 and 6.

Year 7 Selective High School Placement for 2021 (current year 5)
Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Parents must apply online at the following link: https://schoolsequella.det.nsw.edu.au/file/eafa8804-3a28-4730-9fc0-0ee49dd90f83/1/SHS-application-information.pdf Please read the instructions carefully. Applications are available between 11th October and 11th November 2019. Parents who would like their child to sit the selective assessment must apply before the closing date. It is also requested that parents complete an ‘Intention to apply for Year 7 entry to a selective high school in 2021 form. The Selective High School Placement Test for entry to Year 7 in 2021 is held on 14th March 2020 in test centres. The test has multiple-choice questions in reading, mathematics and general ability and a writing component.
Tell Them From Me Survey
A final reminder that this is the last week we are seeking parent feedback on our school. We use the feedback to drive future planning. It is very important that we gain a large proportion of parental and carer feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to assist us in providing us with valuable feedback. The link below will take you to a brief survey that should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/sapsparents2019
Kindergarten 2020
Our Kindergarten 2020 orientation process is about to commence. There will be three orientation sessions where
our new kindergarten students will join with this year’s kindergarten to participate in school activities, preparing
them to start school next year. Year 5 buddies will also accompany our newest students during their visits to Salt
Ash Public School. They will demonstrate how to be positive, respectful and safe learners. Kindergarten 2020
parents are invited to attend an information session. This will be held in the school library during the first
orientation visit on 28th October beginning at 10am.
Christmas Show and Shine
Our school choir and dance group have again been invited to participate in Raymond Terrace MarketPlace Show
and Shine where Santa will be making his big arrival. There will be a stage set up on the oval next to the
MarketPlace for students to perform on. We will also be able to take part in Santa’s parade. This will occur on
Sunday 10th November from 10am. Please let Mrs Smailes or Mrs Deguara know if your student is involved in
either dance or choir and is unable to make this performance on this Sunday.
