A Message from Your President

I hope that all of you are having a lovely summer. The weather has been great – not too hot, not too cold.

Now that Ann Lawson has retired as ski trip coordinator after so many years of handling that task, we are trying to decide what to do about the annual Club ski trip. I sent a survey request including information about options to everyone who had gone on a Club ski trip in the last few years (25 people) and so far have received 15 responses (60 %). The results are split between the FWSA trip option (to Big Sky in 2020), the keeping our own trip but letting our travel agent arrange the details and collect the money, and the not going on any more trips option. Hopefully we will hear from the rest of the people and then make a decision. If any of you have thoughts on this issue, please let me hear them. (Susan and I probably will not go on a Club trip this year as I “won” some trips at the silent auction at the FWSA convention: 4 days at Banff/Lake Louise, 3 days at Big White, and 4 days at Park City, which is probably enough for the year.)

The annual summer/luau party this year is July 13 at the Grant’s. We are sending out a Blast about it and also calling those without email. I hope to see all of you there. The pool is heated and very inviting.

The Board also agreed to form a committee to consider the future of the Club. If any of you would like to be considered for the committee, please let me know. And if you have ideas but do not want to participate, please give me your ideas. We will consider any and all.

Have a great summer!

Thank You, Phil Grant

Committee to Consider the Future of Grindelwald Ski Club

At a recent Grindelwald Board meeting, the subject of the future of the Club was raised. The Board agreed to form a committee/group of interested members to consider the future, if any, of the Club. It was clear from the discussion at the meeting that there are a variety of opinions and little agreement.

The future of the Club has been considered before, but no concrete findings, conclusions or recommendations were made, and no formal mechanism to carry out any such even had there been any.

In fact, the issue has been avoided by happenstance. However, it seems that if the Club is to have any future, the issue cannot be avoided any longer. Our members are growing older and there are few, if any, younger replacements. This is not an issue only for our Club, but for many others. On the other hand, many clubs are thriving and growing. Why?

The Nachrichten is not the place to discuss the issues, but it is a place to ask for members interested in participating in considering the

future of the Club to let the Board know that they are interested, to let the Board know if they would like to be considered for membership on such a committee, and to let the Board know that even if they do not want to or cannot participate they have opinions and would like those opinions heard and considered.

So please let the Board know what you think and want. Contact any Board member by telephone, email or letter and let them know.

Thank you. Phil Grant

Far West Ski Association Convention June 13-16, 2019 Reports / Comments / Pictures

Sandy Blackwell LA Council President

The Far West Ski Association Convention 2019 - was held June 13-16 in Indian Wells, CA at the Hyatt Regency--gorgeous property, lots of events happening, and if you were not there, you missed out!

As always, prizes are given out; and most importantly AWARDS ARE

GIVEN OUT! Los Angeles Council did VERY well:

PETE SMITH (Wailers) Safety Person of the Year

TODD HOOD (Snowbusters on behalf of NBS - Western Region) Man of the Year for Far West Ski Assoc.

HANNAH NISHIMOTO (Unrecables) Jimmie Heuga Award

Thursday night - the pub crawl - We started at the Renaissance Hotel across the way, went down to the Palm Springs Street Faire for food, drinks, bands, vendors, and then back to the Hyatt for drinks and dessert on the Patio.

Past Activities

Friday - lots of choices for the day: the ever-popular golf tournament (run this year by Sally Lash, GSC), a tram ride up Mt.

San Jacinto, tour of homes, spa day, and more. Afternoon free time OR pool party. Then at 6:30 the Silent Auction started --lots of vendors with resort, skiing, diving, accommodations and other adventure, etc. packages (many went for 1/2 price or less). There were also 2 raffles to raise money for the Far West Ski Foundation Scholarships. The wines donated by Joe Harvis are always sought-after prizes.

Saturday morning - a short meeting for FWSA, Then Travel Expo, Man and Woman of the Year competition; 2021 FWSA Ski Week presentation; and the Snow Sports Academy classes on insurance, running a great and successful trip; and ways to attract new members and a bit of officer succession planning. People seemed unsure of the evening Dinner Dance so there

was formal, Hawaiian, western and casual, so everyone was comfortable in whatever they were wearing! Brilliant! More prizes were awarded, and pictures taken.

Sunday morning - the ever-popular Eye Opener (yes at 7:00 a.m.) - then the serious business: FWSA board meeting to vote for FWSA officers. Hope to see you next year in Portland.

Susan Grant GSC Delegate

I enjoyed the panel presentation on insurance and liabilities for clubs presented by Fred Liebel...and I took lots of notes! The meals and social events were well run, and we met many folks from other clubs. The keynote speaker at Saturday’s Awards Luncheon was Dr. Jon Kedrowski, who had just returned from his latest climb of Mt. Everest. His was an inspirational talk, with pictures and stories that kept us fully

engaged. I also enjoyed a “spa day” -- just relaxing and enjoying some quiet time. This was an enjoyable experience and I really hope we can go next year to Portland!

Sandra Knapp GSC Delegate

Since Norbert was the official liaison between LA Council and Orange Council for this convention, we “re-learned” the challenges of coordinating “fun” events as well as providing substantive material for the attendees. As usual, the chaos of preparation resulted in a smoothly operating program. Speakers were very interesting and awards were spread out between the Saturday luncheon and dinner. Los Angeles Council came away with fewer than usual awards, and unfortunately provided fewer than usual voting Delegates. To me, the biggest surprise was that Billy Kidd was NOT there (due to family obligations)!

It was a Hoe Down! Thanks to Ely and Adriana Awad, and Al and Clarice VanKlavaren, the hardy troops who scaled “Rolling Hills” enjoyed marvelous views of the harbor and surrounding villages AND copious amounts of delicious appetizers, roast beef, corn on the cob, potato salad, biscuits and coleslaw. Entertainment was provided by the Awad twins, Sophia and Luke. If ONLY that ENERGY could be bottled!

The happy diners were: Phil and Susan Grant, Eleonor and Lou Hoesl, Sandra and Norbert Knapp, Ann Lawson and her neighbor Mimi McDonald. Also sharing the fun was a long-time friend of Clarice and Adriana. You who didn’t attend really missed out on a beautiful event. Next time you’ll know better!

Progressive Italian DinnerOffered as a progressive dinner by Cheryl Graffi (appetizers at her home); Susan Grant (main course at the Grant’s home); and Mary Campbell (dessert at the Campbell’s home), it wound up as a progressive dinner all held at the Grant’s. The only moving we guests did was from the patio where Cheryl served her delicious appetizers and Philip poured glass after glass of wine to the dining and living rooms set up for 15 of us where Susan, from her newly remodeled kitchen, served her sumptuous dinner of salad, rolled lasagna, chicken, etc., and more wine!! Dessert provided by Mary was cannoli along with other sweets and coffee – what a great day of drinking and eating with good friends – you can’t ask for anything better!! Those who bid on this item (Jean Sinclair, Dot Steeves, Alicia McVicker, Tom Swift, Joyce Jellison, Fred Yamashita, Barbara Johnson, Judy Lafferty, and Me) I think will agree with my comments on this dinner. If it is offered again, I highly recommend you bid on it.

BINGO!Sally Lash and the catering staff of her residence complex again provided a delicious luncheon to sustain the happy gamblers. The liquid refreshments helped too, of course. With only ten players, we had plenty of room for multiple bingo cards (until we got dizzy bobbing back and forth and up and down to scan them!). Remembering what “game” we were playing was a challenge, too--Cross, X, Boarder, Regular or Blackout, or??

“Lady Luck” was missing some of her favorite players so skipped around a bit, but seemed to favor Sandra Knapp who wound up with FIVE prizes!?! And lovely prizes they were--as always, thanks to Ann Lawson. There was wine (of course), and kitchen accessories, scented delights for the home and bath, etc., etc! And no one went home empty-handed as everyone who attended received a “parting gift bag.” We owe both Ann and Sally much gratitude for their always-generous donations to make the annual Bingo event such a favorite. THANKS!
