The aims of the festival are: Firstly, the festival is one with a strong local content that supports and celebrates local writing. There are many great writers past and present, from the Salisbury area. We want to showcase their work and, through initiatives like the Salisbury Story Prize, encourage the next generation of writers as well. Secondly, the festival is one that is predominantly fiction-based. We want a festival that focuses on creative writing over memoirs and celebrity-led books. Thirdly, the festival is one that is focused on both readers and writers. The Salisbury Writing Circle is about creative writing and we want this festival to have a practical element that supports writers. Fourthly, we want the festival to be as inclusive and as accessible to all as possible. Once again, we have kept ticket prices low, with concessions for those on benefits and under-25s, as well as offering a number of free events. It has been a difficult year for the city of Salisbury, but what the festival schedule shows is that Salisbury has so much to celebrate. The festival is part of what makes Salisbury thrive, and we very much look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful city.

Director, Salisbury Literary Festival

I’m thrilled to be introducing this brochure for the second year of the Salisbury Literary Festival. Following the success of the inaugural event last year, we return with an exciting and expanded 2018 programme featuring bestselling and award-winning authors for both adults and children. Over the following pages, you will see that we have three fantastic headliners: Val McDermid, Matt Haig and Jonathan Coe. Our Salisbury Greats series is back, which this year focuses on the work of Dorothy L Sayers and Thomas Hardy. And, given the events in Salisbury earlier this year, we welcome Charles Cumming, Mick Herron and Mark Urban, to offer context and insight. Salisbury Literary Festival is a not-for-profit organisation, run by a dedicated team of local volunteers. It is led by members of Salisbury Writing Circle, the largest writing group in South Wiltshire with 160 members and a regular attendance of 30 to 40 participants each month.

This event brings together a panel of authors to discuss truth and narrative from diverse perspectives. Months after Salisbury’s nerve agent attack and in the year marking the centenary of the end of WWI and the right of (some) women to vote, our 2018 panel of storytellers will consider the words of the late novelist Ursula K. Le Guin, from her 2014 National Book Awards speech: “Hard times are coming, when we will be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now and can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine some real grounds for hope. We will need writers who can remember freedom. Poets, visionaries – the realists of a larger reality.”

HostErica Wagner is an author, critic and lecturer in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths College.

PanelistsBidisha is a writer, critic and TV and radio broadcaster specialising in culture and social justice. Barney Norris is the Martin Esslin Playwright in Residence at Keble College, Oxford and author of Turning for Home. Lionel Shriver is a journalist and author of We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Salisbury Literary Festival originated from Salisbury Writing Circle, a free monthly meeting of local writers from beginners to published novelists. The group meets for a mixture of workshopping and guest authors and has grown to become the largest creative writing group in South Wiltshire. Guests for this autumn include Clare Empson (5 September), Lucy Clarke (3 October) and Nicola Ford (7 November). New members always welcome!
