Calculating Sales Tax and Tip – Method One
Step One- Convert the percent to a decimal. 5% = .05
Figure out your total bill, if you buy a CD for $15.50 with a sales tax of 5%.
Step Two – Multiply the price and the decimal. $15.50 x .05 = .775 round to .78Step Three- Add the tax or tip to the price. $15.50 + .78 = $16.28

Step One- 6.5% = .065

Calculating Sales Tax and Tip – Method Two
Step One- Add the percent and 100%. 100% + 4.5% = 104.5%
Figure out your total bill, if you buy a latte for $3.50 with a sales tax of 4.5%.
Step Two – Convert the percent to a decimal. 104.5% = 1.045Step Three- Multiply the price and the decimal. $3.50 x 1.045 = $3.66
