President Barack Oba-ma issued a sweepingchallenge to Congress andthe American peopleTuesday night to do morefor the poor and middleclass and to end the nastypartisan political fightthat has characterized hissix years in office.

The president issued abroadly optimistic reportabout the country in hisState of the Union addressto Congress, which is nowdominated by oppositionRepublicans in bothchambers. He spoke ofmillions of new jobs creat-ed, modestly rising wagesand a stock market thathas soared.

Obama pledged towork with Republicans, but he showed few signsof curtailing his own plansto meet GOP priorities.

Instead, the presidentin his hourlong addressvowed to use his veto pento strike down Republicanefforts to dismantle hissignature accomplish-ments, including hishealth-care and financial-reform laws.

“We can’t put the secu-rity of families at risk bytaking away their healthinsurance or unravelingthe new rules on WallStreet or refighting pastbattles on immigrationwhen we’ve got a systemto fix,” Obama said.
