awesome job discussing the hogs and sharing their passion for this industry, while making sure each exhibitor had a great experience in the ring.

Shane Brinning, Iowa, and Kelton Mason, Texas, sorted through hundreds of entries to fi nd their showmanship winners. The judges commented on the quality of the showmen and the intense competition in each division.

We take great pride in running a smooth show and appreciate the hard work and efforts of the Black Hawk College – East Campus judging team, the NJSA Board of Directors, the NSR Youth Advisory Board and all of the volunteers who made up our talented ring crew that week.

The skillathon grew again this year. Dan Jennings, Ill., and Rich Knipe, Ill., organized a fun and challenging skillathon with new stations relating to breed eligibility and swine health.

The judging contest was another positive event with carefully selected classes and excellent offi cials and helpers. A special thanks to Dan Shike, Ill., and Brandon Yantis, Ill., for making this contest a success.

The speech, photography and poster contests also expanded. It was exciting to see the caliber of competitors.

The Mentoring Values People (MVP) program was a big hit with our exhibitors – bringing a select group of 30 outstanding youth mentors together with 80 youth protégés. Thanks to Katey Brattain, Ind., for her continued leadership of this program.

Special shipmates. The NJSA was pleased to announce Warren Beeler, Ky., as the 2007 NJSA Distinguished Service Award winner during the NJSA Annual Meeting on Friday. Beeler’s passion and enthusiasm for youth and the livestock industry made him an easy choice for the award. Beeler has put in many long hours helping NJSA members as a judge, announcer, judging-contest offi cial, leadership-conference speaker and member of the NSR Youth Advisory Board.

The NJSA sponsors made a splash

at this year’s show, too. Some of the most exciting booths ever attracted kids and families to check out the great opportunities within the swine industry. Thanks to all of our colleges who were a part of our college fair.

A special thanks to Ray and Kim Perryman of Short Round Ministries, who drove from Shallowater, Texas, to inspire and encourage our exhibitors on Saturday morning. Ray’s message was once again a powerful reminder to us all about what really mattered that week.

Shiver me timbers. As the NJSS came to a fi nale on Saturday, I couldn’t help but feel honored to be a part of such an exciting and amazing organization. Our members and their families truly make this industry a success, and we appreciate the sacrifi ces families make to come to our shows.

People in Great Support (PIGS) was in full force at the show – helping from one end of the barn to the

other. We are looking forward to their continued assistance, suggestions and ideas to make our organization better. I appreciate the leadership of Carin Vickrey, Ind., in PIGS and all of the people who are signing up to join this wonderful NJSA support team. If you’d like to become more involved, check out the Web site for more information.

Thanks to everyone who sacrifi ced their time to help make the 2007 NJSS a wonderful event for all. I am thankful to work for such a terrifi c group of youth and their families who go out of their way to make this program excel.

Don’t forget to order your DVD of the show. The cost is $20, and they can be ordered by calling 765.463.3594. This DVD features coverage of the champion-gilt drive, the showmanship fi nals, winning speeches and highlights from the entire event.

And, don’t forget to mark your calendars for next year’s NJSS on July 1-5, 2008.
