PATHFINDER SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH JUNE 2019 Depending on when you read this we will soon have, or already have, a new Bishop of the South Da- kota Synod. On Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 the South Dakota Synod Assembly is meeting and the agenda items included the vote for a new Bishop. The term of a Bishop is six years with a two -term limit. David Zellmer has been our Bishop since 2007 and has been instrumental in the contin- ued success of many types of ministries here in our state. Six years ago we voted to see if Bishop Dave would have his second term. The process of voting that year marked a change in how we elect bishops. It is called an ecclesiastical ballot. The following information is from a letter sent out by the South Dakota Synod Council. What is an Ecclesiastical ballot? Also known as a nominating ballot, an Ecclesiastical ballot is a means by which nominations for the office of bishop are made by casting a vote. On the first ballot, any minister of Word and Sacrament on the roster of the Evangelical Luther- an Church in America is eligible (except, according to bylaws, the sitting bishop of the South Dakota Synod who is in his/her second term). Individuals lifted-up during conference assemblies are not automatically nominated. They must be nominated (names written) on the first ballot. On the nominating (first) ballot, three-fourths of legal votes cast is needed for election. If no election occurs, the second ballot consists of all of those nominated, minus pastors who remove their names from consideration. On the second ballot, three-fourths of votes cast are needed for election. On the third ballot the names of seven nominees (plus ties) who received the greatest number of votes cast on the second ballot and 2/3 of legal votes cast (66.7%) is needed for election. If it comes to the fourth ballot three nominees (plus ties) who received the greatest number of votes will be listed on the ballot. 60% legal votes cast is needed for election. If there has not been an election a fifth ballot consists of two nominees (plus ties) who received the greatest number of votes cast. A majority of le- gal votes cast (50% +1) wins the election. Perhaps you have seen a list of names in regards to the election. They were names that were lifted up at each of the conferences spring assemblies. These people are not officially nominated un- less they are nominated at the Synod Assembly, but because of the timely matter of the election pro- cess during the Assembly this allows time for ministers to seriously consider the call as well as allow the committee to complete the necessary biographical information, sign a disclosure form, and a form authorizing a background check. Voting members who will represent Salem Lutheran Church at the election include Ron (planting permitted) and Renea Schoenfelder as well as myself. It will be a Spirit-filled process with time taken for prayer and listening for the Spirit’s direction. This is a time of transition for our South Dakota Synod. Please keep Bishop Dave Zellmer and his staff in your prayers as they move on to new callings. Also pray for the new Bishop as he or she begins the task of choosing a new staff and discerning how the Spirit will be leading them in their time as Bishop. As a closing I want to share with you a prayer from Kathy McHenry, Executive Director of Lu- theran Planned Giving of South Dakota, who spoke to us a while back. There have been a series of devotions on the election of the Bishop by many different people of the Synod and I thought Kathy’s prayer was worth sharing as we approach the beginning of our new Bishop’s term of office. Gracious God, anticipating a new adventure, we come to you today without words or confi- dence of our own. Thank you for the reassurance that your hand is on the shoulder of the person who will be called to the office of Bishop, and on each of us. May your hand-delivered words be evident in each of our conversations throughout this process as a witness to the life-changing power of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Blessings on our new Bishop, Pastor Tammy

Friends in Christ, I hope this letter finds you all in good health and your head above water!! Late April and early May were found to be busy at Salem with the carpeting pro-ject started and completed in a little more than 24 hours! We started by moving all the pews to the north side of the sanctuary on Sunday at 1:00 pm ~ this was done in a couple of hours! Monday morning they started laying carpet on the south side; and by 1:00 pm on Monday we moved all the pews back to the south side. They finished carpet-ing the north side, and by 5:00 pm that same day we started fastening pews down and were done by 7:30 pm, all on Monday. I do want to thank the following individuals for helping to make this happen ~ Paul Baumiller, Dan, Patty & Miles Mogck, Willard & Linda Maas, Jason & Julie Semmler, Ron Schoenfelder, Mary Alberts, Joe & Amy Reiser, Bart & Maggie Lorenz, Matt Gunnare, Kerm Gehring, Tom, Jesse & Nick Wudel, Pastor Tammy, Mark Morehouse and Paul Thury. A special thanks to Bart Lorenz, Matt Gun-nare, Dan Mogck, Tom, Jesse & Nick Wudel, and Paul Baumiller, as they were there up to four times to help in a 24-hour period. Many hands truly made the task easy and fun. Hope everyone en-joys the new look - and more spacious leg room between pews, as well as the handicapped acces-sible area in back of the sanctuary. The Synod Assembly is in Sioux Falls May 31 - June 1. Please keep Ron & Renea Schoen-felder and Pastor Tammy in your prayers as they consider and vote on the new bishop for Salem and the ELCA in South Dakota. Please keep the farming community and everyone affected by the terribly wet spring in your prayers. Hopefully , working together, we can get through this tough time in our lives as it will affect everyone down the road ~ including Salem Luther-an and Main Street Parkston, SD! Please also keep in your prayers all those affected by the tornadoes and flooding in all areas of our country. In Christ,

Thomas Semmler President of Salem

Salem Lutheran Church will again help to serve the Love Feast at the United Methodist Church in Mitchell on Thursday, June 27. There will be sign-up sheets in the narthex for helping to work and bringing food items. Please put this on your calendar. Everyone (men, women, and children) is encouraged to help. We will need about 15 or more workers ~ first shift to go and cook food starting at 2:30-3:00 pm; main workers shift starts at 5:00, and we are out the door by 7:00! This would be a great family project to help serve and visit with the guests. Watch the bulletin for more news and updates.

Wishing for favorable weather for our crops,

Denise Weber Coordinator of the W/ELCA

GOD IS GOOD! ALL THE TIME! ALL THE TIME! GOD IS GOOD!

I hope you start to hear this saying a lot around church in the next few months.

We first heard it at the Hope in the Heartland event in February when they used it to gather the attention of those present. But we liked the message and the energy it gave so much that the Worship and Evange-lism Committee has decided to incorporate it into the fabric of our lives together here at Salem Lutheran Church.

So when you hear someone say, “God is good!” You respond with “All the time!” They will say back, “All the time!” and you say “God is good!”

It will help us to remember

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4

LOVE FEAST, June 27, 2019 Salem Lutheran will be serving at the Love feast again this year on Thursday, June 27th. (The Love

feast is a local non-profit ministry, located at the Methodist Church, that is made up of a team of stewards

from many different faith backgrounds and volunteers from many churches, businesses, and organizations

who come together to serve the Mitchell community. Love feast not only serves a free hot meal to anyone

who comes twice a month, but also donates hundreds of backpacks to youth in need every year.) Salem

Lutheran will need to provide at least 10 workers, 16 salads, and 18 dozen cookies/bars. We also bring

prizes for the guests served and pay for much of the food served. We partner with Dakota Kids 4-H. We

will be serving 400 meals. We serve in their church hall, and deliver to shut-ins. We are thankful for the

support of Thrivent and W/ELCA to help us pay for the meat, milk, prizes, etc. Please sign up to help serve

or make food for this worthy cause in the narthex. Contact Nancy Lorenz with questions. 505-0217.

Do You Remember When . . . ?

30 years ago (June, 1989) ~ An announcement made recently by the “COOKBOOK” Committee

indicated that a publisher has been chosen and all is now ready for the collection of recipes for the

All-Church Cookbook. Pinehill Printery of Freeman will publish the book . The forms on which you

may write your recipes will be available in the narthex beginning June 10. The committee asks that

these forms be returned by September 1. More information will be available later.

25 years ago (June, 1994) ~ We are grateful for the approximately 50 responses we have so far

received in our recent “Hymn Survey” of Salem Lutheran Congregation. Many excellent hymns and

songs have been brought forward as favorites ~ hymns from LBW and other sources as well! In the

communion-practice portion of the survey, most preferred the standing procedure. All of these re-

sponses will be listened to carefully by the Worship Committee as we go about planning the worship

of the Salem Community.

20 years ago (June, 1999) ~ “That’s about as exciting as watching grass grow!” Maybe you’ve

heard this before, a way of saying that something is really boing. But is growing grass something we

should treat so lightly? After all, we’d never hear a farmer saying that watching corn grow was bor-

ing, lackluster, or a waste of time. There is something to be learned from watching the natural

growth process; that’s one of the very best things about summer. ~ Pastor Randy Koeller’s letter

15 years ago (June, 2004) ~ The “HIGH NOONERS” will meet every Wednesday at 12:00 noon in

the church parking lot. What is “HIGH NOONERS”? “HIGH” stands for high schoolers, but all Lu-

ther Leaguers, beginning with the 7th graders, are invited. And “NOONERS” stands for the time of

the day that we will meet, at 12 o’clock noon. The meeting should last about an hour. We will decide

together what to do in that hour ~ order pizza and go to the park (weather permitting, of course!),

go to Boom’s for ice cream, or just hang out and talk about . . . whatever is on your mind at the time.

10 years ago (June, 2009) ~ The kids in Kids’ Talk weren’t too sure about trusting this new pastor

~ and some did not believe that I had something in my hand that they would never see again. But the

next week they were doing ministry handing out flowers on Mother’s Day. ~ from Interim Dan Brandt

5 years ago (June, 2014) ~ One of the legacies that my mother left for me and my siblings was a

simple mantra: be a person who is sharing and caring. In all of the world’s philosophies, and reli-

gions, that may not seem very profound. But, as 1 John 4:8 ways, “God is love”. If, at the center of

the universe, and all of life, there is God, then there is love. Sharing and caring are, simply, ways

that we participate in who God is; and, in doing so, we bring in the Kingdom. In the end, it is not the

applause of the crowds that will be the measure of our lives, but the applause of God. ~ from Pastor

Kwen Sanderson’s letter

~ ~ * ~ ~ * ~ ~ * ~ ~ * ~ ~ An encouraging word . . .

The Bible repeatedly “encourages” Christians to “encourage one another”. How can you tell when someone needs encouragement? The answer is easy, said Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy: if they’re breathing! He quipped, “I get a lot of encouragement, but I never got an overdose.” Offering encouragement is an easy way to have a big impact. In fact, two esteemed Christian writers call encouragers angelic and godly. George MacDonald said, “If, instead of a gem or even a flower, we could cast the gift of a lovely thought into the heart of a friend, that would be giving as the angels give.” And G.K. Chesterton said, “If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God.” Who, in your life, might need an encouraging word today?

PLEASE HELP!!! The Salem Quilters are in

DIRE NEED of fabric . . .

They are in need of ANY type of fabric

that is suitable for quilt tops and will work for cutting squares ~

any extra fabric, even leftovers from some of your own projects, or

gently-used clothing that you no longer wear.

They are also in need of bed (flat) sheets that will work

for quilt backs ~ either new, or gently-used.

If you are able to share some

of your fabric with them, please bring it to the sewing room

at the bottom of the stairs in the Education Unit.

And, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

According to Salem Lutheran’s Constitution, a voting member of the congregation is classified as a confirmed member who “has communed and made a contribution of record during the current or preceding year”. In an effort to save time, energy, and trees, the council has decided members need only fill out one communion card within the year. We encourage you to commune often, but you need only fill out one card in the year. Be sure to fill out a card when you think of it.

SALEM LUTHERAN EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION

Some of you may remember, a number of years ago, when we had sent out papers for all members of Salem to fill out their Emergency Con-tact information, to be used only in the case of emergency when no one else is able to help. A large number of those information sheets have become obsolete, as older contact members may have passed away, other contacts may have moved from the area, and/or you may have changed the names of those you want to be con-tacted. Copies of this contact sheet may be found in the narthex, or stop by the church office to pick one up at your convenience.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ~

A child's description of a thunderstorm....... When you read this, you will never think of thunderstorms the same way again.

This should make you smile!!

A Child's View of Thunderstorms

A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was ques-

tionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school. As the

afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning.

The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would

be frightened as she walked home from school. She also feared the electrical

storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and

quickly drove along the route to her child's school. As she did, she saw her

little girl walking along.

At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lightning fol-

lowed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile .

When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, "What

are you doing?"

The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my pic-

ture."

May God Bless You Today and every day

as you face the storms that come your way !!

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

When it rains on your parade, look up rather than down.

Without the rain there would be no rainbow.

“Life is short, live it. Love is rare, grab it. Anger is bad, dump it. Fear is awful, face it. Memories are sweet, cher-ish it.” – Unknown

“Three things you cannot recover in life: the WORD after it’s said, the MOMENT after it’s missed

and the TIME after it’s gone. Be Careful!” – Unknown ~ shared with us by “A friend of Salem”

PATHFINDER

BITS & PIECES

THE JUNE NOISY OFFERING on Sunday, June 16, will benefit St. Dysmas Ministries in South Dakota. Members of Salem have attended worship services with the prisoners at Mike Dur-fee State Prison in Springfield and the South Dakota State Prison in Sioux Falls, SD, both ELCA congregations. Talk to some of the persons who have been there to worship. The next time the opportunity is available, please prayerfully consider going there to worship ~ those are experiences you will never forget.

“We can do more together than we can alone.” ~ Pastor Tammy Craker

IF YOU’D PREFER to get your PATHFINDER by e-mail, let Marlene know your e-mail address, and we

can do that. Also, please let us know any new addresses of your college students, or other family members that may have moved recently.

JUST A REMINDER that we have Adult Bible Study on Sunday mornings at 10:10 am, or immediate-ly following worship. Adult Bible Study (usually) meets after church in the Fellowship Hall around 10:15 am on Sunday mornings, where we will have an Adult faithlens Discussion. Please join us whenever you can. Just bring yourself and your willingness to participate.

AND ANOTHER Bible Study, every other Wednesday morning, beginning at 9 am on Wednesday,

June 5 in the upstairs of the Education Unit. Interested? Then, please come ~ and bring a friend!!! If you have any questions, please call Laci Baumiller at 999-1737.

UNLESS YOU”RE A PLUVIOPHILE (someone who loves rain), a stretch of sunshine-free days can seem drab and dreary. To make South Korea’s long monsoon season more col-orful, art students created murals on some Seoul sidewalks with hydrochromic paint. It’s invisi-ble on dry surfaces, but as soon as water hits, vibrant images appear. Rain transforms gray pavement into bright scenes of fish, whales and turtles. Life’s storms, whether literal or figurative, can dampen our enthusiasm and even chal-lenge our faith. Yet adversity often reveals God’s true colors - and ours. No matter what clouds pass overhead, God remains perfect, loving and steadfast. And by praising God “rain or shine”, we, as his artwork, reveal that our Creator and his every brush-stroke are trustworthy.

SALEM QUILTERS are in need of fabrics (such as gently-used sheets for quilt backs, and anything that

will work for quilt blocks. It’s time to clean, so check your closets and see what you can find!! The Quilters thank you; the quilt recipients will thank you, too!!! The help of MORE QUILTERS would be greatly appreciat-

ed, as well!!! If you enjoy quilt-type crafts, and fellowship, come on down ~ every Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 pm. Interested in using Thrivent Action $$$ to help the quilters? Pastor Tammy will help you apply.

AGAINST THE BACKDROP of people who avoid work, cut corners and do half-hearted jobs, a diligent

[person] stand out. Practicing diligence is an excellent way to stand out for Christ at home, in the workplace and even at church. Today, complete each one of your tasks, however gib or small, with diligence. ~ David Jer-emiah

THE WORSHIP & EVANGELISM COMMITTEE has approved the suggestion of the W/ELCA to limit

the time names are on Salem’s published prayer list UNLESS that person needs to remain on the list for a long-er time. Names will be removed after being published four (4) times; but, they can be put on again, as neces-sary. Notifying the church office that the name needs to be on the prayer list again will be the responsibility of the person who had put the name on the list, or of anyone else (including the person being prayed for) who feels the name should be there. If the person is to be removed from the list before the end of the four (4) week period, we must hear from the person who had requested the name be put on, or that person him/herself.

IT IS NOT THE TASK of Christianity to provide easy answers to every question, but to make us pro-

gressively aware of a mstery. God is not so much the object of our knowledge as the cause of our wonder. ~ Kallistos Ware

IF YOU NEED A RIDE to one of our worship services here at Salem, or to one of our church events, please call the church office at 928-3752.

FATHERS DAY QUOTE

4 years: My Daddy can do anything!

7 years: My Dad knows a lot…a whole lot.

8 years: My father does not know quite everything.

12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not know that either.

14 years: Oh, Father? He is hopelessly old-fashioned.

21 years: Oh, that man-he is out of date!

25 years: He knows a little bit about it, but not much.

30 years: I must find out what Dad thinks about it.

35 years: Before we decide, we will get Dad's idea first.

50 years: What would Dad have thought about that?

60 years: My Dad knew literally everything!

65 years: I wish I could talk it over with Dad once more.
