Today it is my pleasure to welcome all fellow breeders, friends and family. There is of course one vital person

missing. My Michael shared my pride and passion for our cattle, I miss his support greatly.

Welcome

Managers Comments With cattle prices being at an all time high, it’s a great time to be in the Beef Industry.

It’s been another tough Autumn in the Riverina. We’re wet and green now but the females are still showing what they

went through.

The bulls are in great condition to go out and work. The mineral/molasses lick they were on through Autumn really

helped them to keep growing and hold condition. They have been topped up on a moderate amount of a grain mix for

three months prior to sale.

This year we are offering ten 17month old bulls. There are some really interesting youngsters among them!

The young females are also on a grain mix to pick them up after weaning but the cows and commercial females are pick-

ing up quickly on pasture.

It’s been another big year for the stud. Sydney Royal was a huge success for us, winning the Senior and Grand Champion

bull who went on to be the Best Exhibit, Reserve Senior Champion Bull, Junior Champion Heifer, 1st in the Breeders

Group and Sires/Dams Progeny. Every animal in the team came out with a ribbon to culminate in being awarded the

Most Successful Exhibitor. This was topped off by being awarded the Best Maintained Team.

The Limousin National Show and Sale was also a highlight. With a mostly different team of cattle, we were presented

with the Grand Champion Bull and the Reserve Junior Champion Female. The sale was as strong as it’s been in long

time and hope it continues to be so in the future.

This sale has quite a few Yieldmaster progeny in it. We are certainly happy with the job he’s doing and can’t wait for

some of his females to calve down. They’re looking great!

It’s very gratifying to see Birubi genetics working in so many different facets of fellow breeders programs. Not only did

we see an abundance of show cattle doing well but to find sale bulls and females in catalogues outside of our own is real

proof to us that we are working with a great pool of genetics.

Thank you to Annette for her support and faith in Susie and me to keep things going.

We are all still missing Michael, who passed away early this year. Susie and I are proud to have known him and worked

with him for so many years. Although we are all still getting on with the job, it’s sad not to have him there to enjoy the

highs or to offer advice when needed.

I am confident that the cattle in the sale will go out and work for you under your conditions.

Refreshments after the sale

Sale Format - Video Auction - The live auction will be held in a Marquee with video footage playing on each

lot as it is being auctioned. All sale lots will be on display on the day. Video footage will be available at

www.birubi.net from early August.

Bidding & Phone Service - Birubi has reasonable mobile phone service if you would like to have an agent or

someone else bid on your behalf.

Health - Birubi is situated in a Johnes Disease Protected area and is classified as Beef Protected.

All adult sale animals are covered by the Birubi Assured Program. (Tested free of Pesti

Virus, Double vaccinated for Pesti Virus, 7in1& Vibriosis for bulls). Calves at foot are tested free of

Pesti Virus and will have had appropriate 7in1 vaccinations for their age. (including commercials)

Proto - All purebred Limousin genetics will be tested for Protoporphyria.

Warranty - All Purebred lots are sold under the Limousin Assurance Program.

Embryo Lots - 50% Guarantee if implanted by an approved technician. If there are no more embryos available

of the purchased joining, they will be replaced by embryos of equivalent value in consultation with the

Purchaser.

Buyers Number System - will be in operation at the sale, all prospective buyers must register prior to the sale.

Rebates - A minimum of 1% rebate will be offered to outside agents and up to 4% for agents introducing new

clients to Birubi. Written notice must be given a minimum of 24 hours prior to sale.

A 10% discount will be offered to financial Junior Members of the Australian Limousin Breeders’ Soc.

Deliveries & Transport - Free delivery (by Birubi) for bulls within a 150km radius of Birubi. Other transport

by Birubi to be negotiated with Glenn Trout (Manager). No loading of cattle prior to end of sale.

Birubi does not have facilities for loading trailers therefore no trailers will be loaded on sale day.

Other transport - We recommend the local carrier, Danny McGuire 0428 287 281.

Insurance - Can be affected at fall of the hammer, and must be indicated on your buyers instruction slip.

Interstate Purchasers - The vendor agrees to hold any stock for interstate purchasers until any necessary tests

have been completed.

Catering - Complementary Lunch & refreshments will be available on the day.

Explanation of the Suffixes to Animal Names in this Catalogue

Horn Status : (HP*) Homozygous Polled by DNA test (which has an accuracy of 92%),

(HP) Homozygous Polled by progeny test, , (2P) Homozygous Polled by pedigree, (P) Polled,

(S) Scurred.

Colour : (HB) DNA tested Homozygous Black, (2B) Homozygous Black by pedigree, (B) Black, (R) Red (not

apricot).

Protoporphyria Status : (PN) Proto Normal, (PF) Proto free by pedigree, (PC) the animal is a

carrier of the abnormal gene for protoporphyria, (PS) Proto Suspect (parent of diseased animal), (PU) the

animal has not been tested for protoporphyria or have parents which have been tested

normal or are free by pedigree.

Homozygous : is the term where an animal has two copies of a particular gene (tested or pedigree) for a trait

(colour, polled). An example is Homozygous polled where by all progeny will be polled from that particular

animal or Homozygous black where all progeny will be black.

LIMOUSIN ASSURANCE PROGRAM

As part of the program the studs sell only registered Limousin cattle which have been docility scored. They

also provide warranties for fertility and docility as follows:

Fertility Warranty

Females

Females over 12 months and sold as unjoined are warranted fertile to natural service within 12 months. The

purchaser is to have the right to a full refund of the purchase price of the female (excluding any costs and ex-

penses of the purchaser) on submitting a veterinary report after the expiration of 12 months to the effect that

the purchaser has been unable to get the female in calf to natural service. The veterinarian must state that in

his opinion there is no evidence that the female has suffered any injury or illness since being sold to the pur-

chaser which could have affected her breeding ability. The veterinarian must also state that in his opinion

there is no evidence that the female has been subjected to embryo transfer procedures. The

veterinary report (together with a statutory declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the

report is true and correct) must be forwarded to the vendor (with a copy to ALBS) within 14 days of the first

anniversary of the sale date.

Bulls

All bulls sold as fertile and capable of natural service. The purchaser is to have the right to a full refund of the

purchase price of the bull (excluding any costs and expenses of the purchaser) within six months of the date of

the sale subject to submitting a veterinarian's report stating that the bull is infertile or incapable of natural ser-

vice. The veterinarian must also state that in his opinion the bull has not suffered any injury or illness since

being sold to the purchaser which could have affected his breeding ability. The veterinary

report (together with a statutory declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the report is be-

lieved by the purchaser to be true and correct) must be forwarded to the vendor (with a copy to ALBS) within

14 days of the date being six months after the sale date.

Docility Warranty

All animals are sold as having acceptable docility as defined as score 1, 2 and better than a score of 3 in the

official scoring system of the Australian Limousin Breeders’ Society. The purchaser is to have the right to a

full refund of the purchase price of the animal (excluding any costs and expenses of the purchaser) within 28

days of the date of the sale or a replacement animal of similar quality and price to be supplied by the vendor

subject to submitting a veterinarian’s report stating that the animal is of unacceptable docility defined as score

3, 4 or 5 in the official scoring system of the Australian Limousin Breeders’ Society.

The veterinarian must state that in his opinion the animal has not been mistreated in a way which would have

affected its behaviour since being sold to the purchaser. The veterinary report (together with a

statutory declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the report is believed to be true and

correct) must be forwarded to the vendor within 14 days of the date being 14 days after the sale date.

The story on scurs

Some polled cattle have scurs. Scurs are incompletely developed horns that are generally attached only

to the skin. They range in size from tiny scab-like growths to large protrusions almost as large as horns.

Therefore, polled cattle can be smooth-polled or scurred-polled (polled but expressing scurs). Many

breeders have the mistaken idea that scurs represent an error in transmitting the horned characteristic.

That's not the case.

Scurred cattle should be classified as polled since they do have a polled gene. Only polled animals can

express the scurred trait.

Understanding EBVs

An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of that animal for each trait

measured. EBVs are provided for the following traits:

Gestation Length EBV : this EBV ranks sires for the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter

gestation is indicated by negative EBVs and longer by positive EBVs.

Birth Weight EBV : this EBV indicates the genetic potential for birth weight. Positive EBVs indicate higher

birth weights and negative EBVs indicate lower birth weights of progeny.

Calving Ease Direct EBV : this EBV indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease. Sires with positive

EBVs for calving ease will increase calving ease and sires with negative EBVs will decrease calving ease.

Milk EBV : an important component of fast growth to weaning is the dam's maternal performance. A bull with

a high milk EBV should produce daughters which milk well.

200, 400 & 600 Day Weight EBVs : these EBVs give us an estimation of the animal's genetic potential for

growth.

Scrotal Size EBV : the scrotal size EBV indicates whether the bull will produce sons with above average or

below average scrotal sizes.

Docility EBV : the docility EBV is expressed as the increase or decrease in the percentage of progeny that will

be scored as docile (score 1 or 2). Positive EBVs indicate a higher proportion of progeny that will be scored as

docile and negative EBVs indicate a lower percentage of progeny being scored as docile.

Comparing EBVs

The EBVs for Limousins cannot be compared with EBVs for animals of other breeds. They should be

compared with the current average EBV for the Limousin breed shown below.

Accuracies

Accuracies are presented with each EBV and give an indication of the amount of information that has been

used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the

animal's EBV as more information is analyzed for that animal and its relatives.

Mid Parent EBVs

Where MP is shown for the accuracy of an EBV it is a mid parent value. EBVs shown for embryo lots are mid

parent values.

Arriving Home When you buy a new bull or female for your herd, you can reduce problems by getting them

home and settling them in properly. Animals can become upset and excited during the sale and

delivery process. They are subjected to strange yards, different noises, loss of mates, different

people and handling methods, trucking, unloading, new paddocks and different water and feed.

This combination is often enough to upset even quiet animals.

When they arrive home, it is a good idea to unload them into yards with other animals around.

This will help them feel more secure as our cattle are used to running in a group environment.

New Bulls should not be placed with older herd bulls for a multiple sire joining. The older,

dominant bull will not allow the young bulls to work much, keeping them away from the cows

and increasing the risk of injury. Use new bulls in a single sire joining or with bulls their own

age. If a number of bulls are going to be used together, run them as a mob for a few weeks

before joining to let them sort out their pecking order and reduce the problems later on. When

working, inspect young bulls regularly. Watch them walk to check for lameness and check for

swellings around the sheath and testicles.

Your new animal has had double vaccinations with 7in1, Pestigard and Vibrovax (bulls only),

as well as being drenched with Dectomax Pour On. (July)

To maintain their health, we recommend you give a booster vaccination as above in July each
