Alhamdulillah we have come to the end of semester one 2018. I am impressed and delighted at the progress made by most students of all 3 campuses. We have experienced a productive term with lots of events and activities. It is very pleasing to note and observe that most parents and teachers want the best for their children. I also believe that no student should be disadvantaged over others, because all students at our college have the same rights and responsibilities. I would also like to emphasize the importance of parents’ responsibilities towards their children’s education. I appeal to parents to please approach our Heads of Primary and Secondary if you have any concerns about behavioral issues or the progress of your child at school. We are working very hard to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for every student. We therefore welcome you as a parent to assist us and work with us in improving and helping our children perform their best. I thank parents for having confidence in us by enrolling your children at Australian International Islamic College. I can assure you that every effort is being made to ensure quality outcomes for all our students. Insha’Allah, with your support our college will continue growing towards excellence. May the Almighty Allah grant us ALL, the strength to work towards our goal, Insha’Allah, Ameen. Uniforms

Punctuality

We would ask parents to support us in maintaining good punctuality by: -

Ensuring that their children get up in plenty of time to be ready and prepared for school.

Ensuring their child has organised their bag and equipment the night before so that this does not delay departure in the morning.

Discussing any issues of lateness to ensure this does not become a habit.

Monitoring their child’s attendance record in the report cards and looking for patterns of lateness.

Report Cards

Report cards will be ready in the first week of term 3. Please refer to the letter sent home last week with details of Report Pick Up and Parent Interviews.

Family Details and Emergency Contacts Parents, please ensure that the family and emergency contact details held at the school office are accurate. You may update this by a note through the home-school communication booklet or please call the administration officer to update this information. This will assist us in cases where you need to be contacted in any emergency. Please include a telephone number/email where you may be most easily contacted.

I take this opportunity to thank all parents for their support this semester and I look forward to term 3.

Years 11 & 12 Excursion to University of

Queensland (UQ) Our senior students from Years 11 and 12 recently visited the University of Queensland (UQ) at St. Lucia campus as part of a school engagement experience with the university. The students were divided into two groups and given a tour of the campus by two current third-year UQ students, before all meeting again in a small lecture theatre to listen to a presentation by a PhD student, Jordan De Bono. Jordan spoke of her own experience when first applying to study at UQ, coming from a country town in Queensland, and her journey throughout her studies while at UQ. She gave a great visual presentation to our students, particularly regarding her work within UQ’s Science labs relating to varieties of snakes and extracting snake venom for medical and health discoveries.

After a brief morning tea break relaxing on the vast centre court grassy area of UQ, the students then chose which of two lectures they would like to attend – “Ecology in Australia – Problems, progress and prospects” or a “Law Pro Bono” topic. Both lectures were excellently presented, encouraging interaction from the students, and were both entertaining and informative. This experience at UQ for a few hours gave our students the experience of attending university lectures, walking around the campus and being amongst the busy throng of university students.

UQ’s Student Liaison Visit to

AIIC Two weeks prior to this excursion, the Student Liaison Officer, Jayden Weidemann, visited our college to meet with all students from Years 10, 11 & 12 in the college Boardroom. He gave a comprehensive presentation about studying at the University of Queensland, and covered details of the many Bachelor study areas UQ caters for. Students were given the opportunity to ask numerous questions. Jayden outlined the plans for the upcoming visit to St. Lucia campus for Years 11 & 12, and also encouraged students to attend the UQ Open Day on August 5.

“GROWING UP IN QUEENSLAND” PROJECT

Our College has recently participated in the Queensland Family & Child Commission “Growing Up in Queensland” focus group workshop project. Two groups of 20 students, one from primary grades 3-6, and the other group of secondary students, met together with the facilitators to be part of a workshop about their experience of ‘Growing up in Queensland’.

Teens can have their voice heard and make a difference! Young people, 13–18 y/o, have the opportunity to have their say as part of an exciting new project by the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC). The Growing up in Queensland survey gives teenagers across Queensland a voice about the opportunities and challenges they face and what they need from policy makers, business leaders and communities as they take their steps into the future. The QFCC wants to discover:

how Queensland’s children and young people experience life in their community

their career aspirations and the supports and barriers which can impact them achieving their goals

what they think government should focus on and how they want their communities to look now and in the future.

They want to hear from young people from across the whole state of Queensland, living in different communities, from different cultures and of all abilities. This is their opportunity to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of people their age. The survey is online and can be accessed on a computer, tablet or phone. All teens need is an internet connection and less than 30 minutes to have their say on these important issues. There will be a weekly prize draw of a $50 voucher. The Growing up in Queensland survey is now open. Please encourage your teen to have their say today visit www.e-hub.engagementhub.com.au To find out more about the Growing up in Queensland project visit www.qfcc.qld.gov.au. The Inaugural Inala Community Cup Our students competed in the inaugural Inala Community Cup at CJ Greenfields in Richlands. The boys had been coached by members from Inala Kick Start- a group run by Inala Community House over the past 9 weeks.

We had some minor issues in the morning but we were fortunate enough to have a few Grade 4 boys to help out and they didn't disappoint.

We won all our games in the group and made it to the semi-final playing attractive football and lots of goals!

The semi was a tense game which ended 1-1 and went to a penalty shoot-out. Luqman Sherar was superman in goals (saving two and scoring one) which sent us to the Final.

The Final proved to be a game too much as our boys went down against Durack SS. They did themselves, their families and the College proud. Mashallah!

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY EXCURSION YEARS 10 & 11

Recently on 24 May, 15 students from Years 10 & 11 attended a Griffith University Ambassadors’ Workshop Day at Nathan campus. The theme was ‘Power & Influence in Business’ and the students participated in a lecture and worked in groups together with other secondary colleges. Each group’s assignment was to discuss and prepare a role-play portraying a meeting between a HR Manager and Sales Manager and demonstrating the different types of ‘power’ expressed both in verbal and non-verbal (body language) communication. Each group’s role-play was then presented to the whole audience within the auditorium, and the Lecturers providing valuable feedback to each group. This was a great opportunity for our senior students to experience university for a day. They all became ‘Ambassadors’ for Griffith and received gold badges to wear on their school blazers and have also received Certificates of Participation. On the bus journey home, there was an excited buzz amongst the students and a number expressed their comments afterward of how much they enjoyed this excursion and their positive experiences of the day. This was the second Workshop our College has participated in. We will be attending a further workshop with Griffith BUSINESS later in the year, which has already proved very popular with many students already registering their interest to attend. Greetings from the AIIC

Parent Advisory Committee

The AIIC Parents and Citizens (P&C) committee is a group of concerned parents, carers, administration and teachers at our school; that works together to make AIIC a better place in big ways and small.

We can highlight issues our children might be facing in class, concerns we might have, or come up with ideas to solve daily school problems. We can even raise our own funds to help out the school in different ways! We can use our voice to make issues heard at the school level and at local council level. Also, we can organise family fun events; to raise funds or to just get to know each other and have a good time.

Some of our achievements this year include: organising the first P&C food stall at the annual AIIC Quran Recitation Competition in May; raising funds for Human Appeal through a garage sale at our Annual Iftar Night in Ramadan; contributing to the construction of the pedestrian footpath from the Durack Campus driveway; and currently we are working with the school administration and the local council to get AIIC classified as a "School Zone" for increased road safety for our kids.

We are always looking for new and active members; after all, every parent wants to ensure the best possible upbringing for his/her child.

At AIIC, we may be from very different cultural backgrounds, but the shared goal uniting us all is the best "Tarbiyah" (i.e. education +upbringing) for our children. May we continue to work together towards this goal through teamwork InshaAllah.

If you have any concerns, advise or are interested in contributing to our activities, please contact me at [email protected]

Regards,

Fizzah Raza

Ramadan at

Our College As far as a believer is concerned, the departure of the month of Ramadan is a painful experience. From the very beginning of the month of Rajab, the believer repeatedly asked his Lord, Allah, The Most Merciful for blessing with an opportunity to reach in the month of Ramadan. When one witnessed the month of great blessings and rewards, he or she engaged in fasting, praying, reading the glorious Qur’an and giving charity. The month of Ramadan came as a most interesting guest that was here to inspire the hearts and minds of millions.

On the night of Laylatul Qadr, many shed tears of Taubah or repentance expecting the forgiveness from their creator, Allah, The Almighty.

Ramadan activities at the college

Here at our Australian International Islamic College, we introduced a number of Ramadan activities in order for the students to appreciate the month and benefit in different ways.

Some of the Ramadan activities included:

The annual Ramadan quiz competition for both primary and secondary students. This was done in two different stages. After providing the students with the relevant materials, the whole college students participated in an internal competition in each class. This gave an opportunity for each and every student to engage in extra reading and preparing for the quiz. The questions were mainly related to the topics of Ramadan, Qur’an and the biography of the Prophet (PBUH).

In the second and final stage, there were four teams with five participants in each. Those teams who scored the most were placed in first, second and third positions and awarded with some prizes.

The quiz resulted in great success and thanks go to the management, Imams, teachers and the students for their great contributions.

Ramadan corner competition

This was mainly about decorating the classes with some themes and messages of Ramadan and fasting. Each class took the competition very seriously and with the spirit of competition. It was really beautiful to see how well the students, under the guidelines of their teachers decorated their classes. The themes displayed in the classes were mainly about the crescent sighting, Iftaar and sharing with Zakatul Fitr. A panel of judges consisted of the student councils and some teachers selected the top classes that put the best efforts in the Ramadan corner competition. The top performed classes were acknowledged with some attractive prizes.

Qur’an reading sessions

It was very pleasing to see the involvement of our children in the extra Qur’an reading sessions held during the month of Ramadan. The children from the primary classes were assisted and supervised to dedicate their play time in the prayer hall for reading the Qur’an. Some of them used this opportunity for completing the Khatam of the Qur’an, while others memorized more Surahs.

The secondary students also spent some of their free time in reading the Qur’an in the library or Islamic rooms. This was despite their very hectic season of assignments and exams.

Hadeeth activities

Student councils volunteered to read some of the Ramadan related Hadeeth in the daily school assemblies. This was in addition to the Hadeeth reading that the college has been practicing after Salatu Dhuhr.

The secondary students were also encouraged to elaborate on a minimum of three Ahadeeth with the details of how those are related to their daily life. This would give them some extra credits to their overall performance in Islamic studies.

In addition to these very productive activities, our college also introduced after Salah story sharing sessions.

We ask Allah, The most Merciful to accept all our efforts and to assist us in producing a productive future generation. Ameen

Workshop with Artist

Jenny Sanzaro- Nishimura

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

Visual Arts at Australian International Islamic College is a subject designed to enhance creativity and develop artistic practices for all students. Over this semester, the students have had varied experiences from hands-on activities utilising and manipulating mixed media to theoretical practices where students learn how to measure equipment, interpret images, symbols and justify their understanding of art.

In Visual Arts, students develop critical thinking skills across all disciplines. Students learn how to communicate ideas, values and new knowledge effectively through a different platform. As students manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces of colours and measuring scales in art, they learn the basic in Maths and when students experiment with media they dabble in science. Art is a universal language that is utilised in today’s day and age to express ourselves and speak across time and place. Creative experiences can help children cope and express their feelings as well as foster mental growth by providing opportunities for trying out new ideas, expanding ways of thinking and problem solving. At Australian International Islamic College, students have had the privilege of visiting gallery exhibitions at GOMA, learned from guided tour-talks and worked with professional artist Jenny Sanzaro- Nishimura to enrich their learning. By engaging with skilled artists and learning from the experts, students have learned how to view and create art at a professional level and incorporate that in their everyday learning.
