TheConsumerGoodsCouncilofSA(CGCSA)has announced that the Minister of Trade& Industry, Rob Davies, will be a keynotespeaker at the CGCSA Summit scheduledfor28and29OctoberatVodaworldinMid-rand,Johannesburg.
Theministerwillbespeakingontheroleofbusiness andgovernment in implementing theNationalDevelopmentPlanandtheroleoftheCGCSAoverthenext20years.
“We’repleased to invitepastandnewdel-egatestothisyear’sinstalment,”saysGwarega
Manghoze, CEO of the CGCSA. “The summitadvisory panel, consisting of top executivesfrom a number of major South African con-sumer goods industry businesses, aims togivedelegatesarichandrelevantagenda,reflectingthetrueexpectationsofretailers,suppliersandthird-party serviceproviders.Over35 speakershavebeenconfirmedforthesummit,whichwillfocus on unlocking stakeholder potential andfindingpracticalsolutionsforvariouschallenges.

TheIsraelDiamondExchange(IDE)andtheDia-mondDealers’ClubofNewYork(DDC)willholdthethirdeditionoftheIsraelDiamondWeekinNewYorkfrom10-13Novemberonthetradingfloor of theDDCat 580 FifthAvenue inmid-town Manhattan. The annual event is a jointinitiativeoftheDCCandIDEandaimstoboostthetradebetweenthetwobourses’members,torenewbusinessbetween localsuppliersandtheir clients and to lower the threshold fordi-amond-buyingjewellerymanufacturersandre-tailerswhowishtogainaccesstotheclub.
“TheNewYorkdiamondbusinesscommu-nityandtheIsraeldiamondindustryareinterde-pendent,”saysIDEPresidentShmuelSchnitzer.“Israelisakeysupplierofhigher-qualitygoodstotheAmericanmarket,whileNewYork–andparticularly the theDDC– is thegateway fordiamondsuppliescomingfromIsrael.Formanyofourmembers,theDDC,locatedintheheartof Manhattan’s gem and jewellery district, islikeasecondhome.”
DDC President Reuven Kaufman concurs.“Undoubtedly, the synergy between Israel’s
andNewYork’sdiamondtradeisunique.How-
ever,itneverceasestoamazemethatinspite
ofthecloserelationshipbetweenourcentres,
when we hold these events, many people
meetoneanotherforthefirsttime,”hesays.
Kaufmanaddsthattheformatofthediamond
weeksinNewYorkandIsraelthereforeproved
tobeverysuccessful.
Approximately100Israelidiamondfirmswill
beabletoparticipateintheevent.“Weexpect
we’llbedonequitequicklyonce the registra-
tionstarts,”saysMotiFluk,Headoftheevent’s

dÉBUt Of tHe aPPLe WatCHApple has unveiled the Apple Watch, a per-
sonaldevicewhich featuresnewtechnologies
and what the company describes as a “pio-
neering user interface that honours the rich
traditionofprecisionwatchmaking”.Thewatch
usesaspeciallydesignedandengineered“digi-
talcrown”thatprovidesan innovativewayto
scroll, zoomand navigate. It also enables the
usertosendandreceivemessages,answercalls
toaniPhoneand–using“digitaltouch”–send
somethingaspersonalastheirheartbeat.Ap-
pleWatchhasalso introducedcomprehensive
healthandfitnessapps.
“Apple introduced the world to several
category-definingproducts:theMac,theiPod,
the iPhoneandthe iPad,”saysTimCook, the
organisation’s CEO. “Now, once again, it’s
poisedtocaptivatetheworldwitharevolution-
aryproduct thatcanenrichpeople’s lives. It’s
themostpersonalproductwe’veevermade.”
Jony Ive, Apple’s Senior Vice-president of
Design, says the Apple Watch incorporates
an entirely new user interface and blurs the
boundarybetweenphysicalobjectsandtouch.
“We’vecreatedanentirerangeofproductsthat
enableunparalleledpersonalisation,”henotes.
The digital crown on the watch also serves
asthehomebuttonandaconvenientwaytoac-
cessSiri.TheRetinadisplayonthedevicefeatures
“force touch”, a technology which senses the
differencebetweenatapandapress,providing
anewwaytoquicklyandeasilyaccesscontrols
within apps. The Apple Watch also introduces
the“tapticengine”andabuilt-inspeakerwhich,
together, discreetly enable an entirely new vo-
cabulary of alerts and notifications that can be
bothheardand felt.Applecustom-designed its
ownS1SysteminPackagetominiaturiseanentire
computerarchitectureontoasinglechip. Inad-
dition, thewatchfeaturesWi-Fi802,11b/gand
Bluetooth4.0topairseamlesslywithaniPhone.
Apple Watch comes in three distinct
collections — Apple Watch, Apple Watch
Sport andAppleWatch Edition—available in
38mmor42mm.Enclosuresarecraftedfrom
customalloysofpolishedorspaceblackstainless
steel, space gray or silver anodised aluminium
and 18ct rose or yellow gold. Apple has also
created an entire range of watch straps: the
high-performance elastomer Sport Band, the
Milanese Loop in a flexible magnetic stainless
steel mesh, the Leather Loop in soft, quilted
leather which conceals magnets for quick
fastening and adjustment, the leatherModern
Buckle,whichcloseswithasolidmetalclasp,the
leatherClassicBuckleandthestainlesssteelLink
Bracelet.ThechargingsystemcombinesApple’s
MagSafetechnologywithinductivechargingfor
aquickconnectionthatsnapsintoplace.
Apple Watch comes with 11 watch faces,
rangingfromthetraditionalanaloguetothedy-
namic timelapseface, theastronomyfacewith
itsinteractive,real-time3Dmodeloftheearth,
sun,moonandplanetsandthesolarface,acon-
temporary sundial. Smart replies and dictation
allowthewearertorespondquicklytomessages
andwithhandoff,theycanstartamessageon
anAppleWatchandtransitiontoaniPhone.The
device shows current location, stock tickers, a
calendarandanappdesignedtoprovidemetrics
for adedicatedworkout session.AppleWatch
usestheaccelerometer,abuilt-inheartratesen-
sor,GPSandWi-Fifromthewearer’siPhone.
Thedevicewillbeavailableinearly2015and
will be compatiblewith iPhone 5, iPhone 5c,
iPhone5s, iPhone6or iPhone6Plus running

of SA (JMASA). Colin Campbell from the
Ekurhuleni Jewellery Project was appointed

The33rdHongKongWatch&ClockFair, the
world’s largest timepiece event, ended on 7
Septemberwithmorethan19000buyers,up
2%overthepreviousyear.Buyersfromanum-
berofkeyandemergingmarketsrecordedsig-
nificantgrowth,includingtheUK(23%),France
(14%), Germany (7%), the Chinese mainland
(8%), India (37%), Korea (30%) and Thailand
(28%).Thefair,stagedattheHongKongCon-
vention & Exhibition Centre, is organised by
the Hong Kong Trade Development Council
(HKTDC), theHongKongWatchManufactur-
ers’ Association and the Federation of Hong
KongWatchTrades&Industries.
“The Hong KongWatch & Clock Fair is
thelargestshowofitskindintheworldand
attractsbuyers fromaround theglobeyear
after year,” says HKTDC Deputy Executive
DirectorBenjaminChau.“Developingorigi-
nal designs and promoting brands are still
the way to go and Hong Kong’s excellent
watch and clock products are well placed
tocapturetheopportunities.Thehighlyac-
claimedSalondeTEreturnedafteritsdébut
last year and once again showcased a fine
selectionofexquisitewatchesthatattracted
buyersattention.”
ThefirstTexas-IsraelDiamondShow,whichtook
placeon29and30SeptemberinSanAntonio,
wasanexcitingeventforbothsides.Theshow,
sponsored by the Texas Jewelers’ Association
(TJA)andtheIsraelDiamondInstitute(IDI),was
an unprecedented opportunity for Israeli dia-
mondexportersandTexasjewellerstomeetface
tofaceanddobusiness.
Theshowwasheld inconjunctionwiththe
TJA2014Conventionandwasthefirsttimethat
jewellers in Texas and the surrounding states
wereoffereddiamondsdirectlyfromthesource.
The event showcased 28 leading diamond
companies from Israel,offeringstones inevery
size,shape,colourandpricepointinbothloose
diamonds and luxury jewellery. The showwas
timed to enable local jewellers to stock upon
diamondsbeforetheholidayseason.
Theevent alsooffered ampleopportunities
for after-hours and informal networking be-
tween vendors and buyers. The IDI-sponsored
galadinneron28Septemberwasahighlightof
theTJAConvention,andwasfollowedbyafes-
tiveTexas-Israelbarbecue,featuringthebestof
TexanandIsraelicuisine.
“TheUSAisourlargestmarketandwewere
happytoseethatdiamondjewellerysalesareon
the rise.We chose to hold the first IsraelDia-
mondShowtherebecausewebelieveinthevi-
talityoftheTexanmarket,”saysNissimPalomo,
IDIChiefMarketingOfficer.“Wehadtolimitthe
numberofcompaniesduetoalackofspace,but
manymoreshowedinterest.”

AnewinternationalthinktankcalledtheWorld
Diamond & Jewellery Forum (WDJF) is being
established, aimed at providing the diamond
and jewellery sectors with the broadest
possibleviewofthechallengesfacingthemso
thattheycanidentifyalternativestrategiesfor
dealingwiththeseissues.Itwilloperateunder
the auspices of Fiera di Vicenza, the leading
Italianbusinessplatform,tradeshoworganiser
andserviceprovider.
The announcement was made by Matteo
Marzotto,PresidentofFieradiVicenza,during
apressreceptioninVenicebeforethestartof
theVicenzaOroFalltradeshowlastmonth.
He also introduced the leadership of the
newforum:EliIzhakoff,HonoraryLife
President of the World Diamond
Council, the World Federation of
Diamond Bourses and CIBJO, the
World Jewellery Confederation,
will be the new body’s Chairman;
GaetanoCavalieri, President of CIBJO,
willbeitsPresidentandCorradoFacco,MDof
FieradiVicenza,willbeitsMD.
“We envisage an organisation that will
serve our industry much as theWorld Eco-
nomicForumdoesatDavos,Switzerland,for
the larger financial community,” says Mar-
zotto. “While the WDJF will engage
withandencouragetheparticipation
of the leadership of the industry, it
will remain independent of poli-
tics. It isn’tmeant to supplant any
existing organisations; merely to
serve the interests of all those bod-
ies. Representatives of the other industry
organisationswillbeinvitedtoparticipatein
theWDJF’s deliberations and to tap into its
knowledgebase.”
The WDJF will fill a void in the greater
diamond and jewellery industry, says
Izhakoff.“Thecompleteabsence
of any all-industry analysis
and planning mechanism has
resulted in situations in which
we’ve often been forced to
reactafter thefact topotentially
dangerous threats, which we
hadn’tproperlyanticipated.Thisincludesthe
conflict diamond crises in 1999 and 2000,
thecollapseoftheJapanesemarketsin2007
and the global financial crisis in 2008. It’s
also meant that we’ve been late in taking
advantageofnewordevelopingeconomic
opportunities. The WDJF is intended
to provide that analysis and
planningcapability.”
“WeintendtheWDJFtobe
fully inclusive,” saysCavalieri.
“We’ll engage with leaders
andopinion-makersfromthedia-
mondandjewelleryindustries,govern-
ment, the international community and spe-
cifically the United Nations, academia, other
businesssectors,civilsocietyandthegreater
community, inorder toanalyseandconsider
current and future developments, and to in-
fluence and help shape global, regional and
domesticagendas in the jewellery,diamond,
coloured gemstone, pearl, precious metals
andrelatedsectors.”
Over the coming months, the WDJF will
introduce its operating structure and sched-
ule. The new organisation plans to conduct
itsfirstpublic forum for the industry in con-
junctionwiththepremiereditionoftheVice-
nzaOroDubai show,which runs from 23-26
April2015.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
has appointed Katherine Palmer Andrews to
the newly-created position of Vice-president
of Ethics and Compliance. She has extensive
experience developing enterprise compliance
programmesandleadingglobalteams,includ-
ingsixyearsinChiefComplianceOfficerroles
atGeneralElectricCo.Shewillworkwithsen-
iormanagementtoensuretheintegrityofthe
institute’scomplianceandethicsprogrammes.

The stone is of exceptional size and clarity,
according to the company, and is yet another
very large, high-quality diamond recovered at
thatmine. InFebruary,Petrasolda29,6ctblue
diamondfromthemine forUS$25,6million (or
US$862 780 per carat). In June, the company
recovered a 122,5ct blue diamond, which is
currentlyforsale.

yearandwillnotifythemarketonceadatehas

CLAIMING TO BE THE OLDEST MANUFAC-
turerofwritinginstrumentsistheItalianbrand
Montegrappa.Theheartofthebrandisits“Ital-
ianness”,whichishardlysurprising.Stillsituated
todayinthehistoricbuildingofitsbirthonthe
banksoftheRiverBrentaintheaffluenttown
of Bassano del Grappa – fromwhich it obvi-
ouslytakesitsname–inthenorthofItaly,the
brandwasfoundedin1912,initiallyasamanu-
facturerofgoldnibandfountainpensduringa
turbulentperiodinthecountry’shistory.
Itwas a by-product of the region’s social
mores,asitmadethetransitionfromthe19th
tothe20thcenturywithchanges inworking
conditions, moving from the agrarian to the
urbanmodus vivendi. Fortuitously, thebrand
benefitedfromapooloftalentedlocalcrafts-
men,aworkforceabletoproducefinelycraft-
edobjectswithstyle,panacheandtheirdrive
toachieveexcellence.Theproductwasorigi-
nallynamedElmoandtheaimwastoproduce
afinelywroughtproductwithacertainflair.
The Bassano factory was in a key position
duringWorldWarI,asmanysoldiersusedElmo
penswhenwritingletterstotheirfamiliesback
home.Amongthemweretwogreatfuturenov-
elists–ErnestHemingwayandJohnDosPassos
–bothofwhomwerevolunteerambulancedriv-
ersatthefront.Theywereknowntohaveused
thesepens,makingthemapartofthehistoryof
animportantdecadeofthe20thcentury.
In the1930s the companyblossomed, en-
joyingagoldeneraattheheightofthepublic’s
taste for luxury goods. The fountain penhad
replaceddippingpens.ThehouseofBassano,
known for its creativity, enhanced itspensby
usingavarietyofcoloursandmaterials,while
theItalianheritageaddedadistinctivestyle.
“the pen is mightier than the sword” is an adage which has been attributed to many personalities over the centuries. One was thomas Jefferson who, in a letter dated 1792, wrote: “go on then doing with your pen what at other times was done with the sword.”
The actual products employ a wide range
oftechniquesandmaterialsthatonlysomepen
manufacturers possess to enhance the bodyof
thepen. These include the5th-centuryprocess
ofdie-casting,deep-drawing, low-reliefengrav-
ing,hand-etching,enamelling,fretworktocreate
pleasant colour contrasts and traditional brush-
polishingforthefinish.Thefountainpenbecame
an accessorywhichmade a fashion statement.
Thanks to its colourful design and the special
jeweller’s technique for which the brand is re-
nowned,thepenshavedistinctivefeatures,such
astheoctagonalshapeoftherotatingsphereat
thetip,preciousmetalssuchasgoldandsilver,
the inclusion of gems
and even celluloid (the
mostdistinctivematerial
used by the brand), as
wellasgalalith.
The Montegrappa
rangeisdividedintotwofamilies:theregular
range is composed of glamorous accessories
that can be utilitarian, in that theymake the
dailytaskofwritingmoreenjoyable,whilethe
limited editions are a blend of craftsmanship
andbeautyinspiredbythepassionofcreativity.

improvementwasexpandedaggressivelybyhis

establishedin1957inGeorgebymasterwatch-
makersRaffaeleD’Amatoandhis son,Deryck

himself and, later, his family. Nunes opened
thefirststoreinPaarlandlaterjoinedhispar-
ents inGeorge.Today the traditionof superb
craftsmanship is continued by Michél Nunes,
third-generationmaster jeweller anddesigner
ofnote.Sincethedeathofhisfatherin2008,
hehasbeen supported in thebusinessbyhis
multi-talentedmother,Marlene.
Nunes joined the business in 1989 after
completing his BA Creative Arts degree in
jewellerydesignatStellenboschUniversity,fol-
lowed by his FGA in coloured gems and dia-
mondsfromtheGemmologicalAssociationof
Great Britain, aswell as lecturing in jewellery
designatStellenboschUniversity.
In1990hewontheElegantManoftheYear

CompanytimepiecesbyLuxcoImporters.Since
1891,BallWatchhasbeenproducingmechani-
caltimepiecesthatcomplywiththemoststrin-
gentcriteriaforprecision,qualityandreliability.
As a pioneer of chronometric standards and
witharichpastcloselyassociatedwiththehis-
toryofAmericanrailroads,BallWatchremains

After presenting a chronometer certified
water-resistanttotheextremedepthof3000

TheNEDU is theunit of theUSNavy re-

Applying the same principle of “Safety
First” adopted from its very beginnings by
BallWatchforitstimekeepers,theNEDU’sex-
periments have enabled new procedures and
equipments to be developed to increase div-
ingsafety. Inparticular, theNEDUestablished
thedecompressiontimetableswhichareavital
referenceforalldivers.Inthesameway,atthe
endof the 19th century, BallWatch played a
pioneeringroleinwatchmakingbylayingdown
chronometric standards used as the basis for
today’sstandards.
Ball Watch has therefore dedicated to the
NEDUthisnewmodel,whichisapowerfulchron-
ographthatisbothsportyandstylish.Allaspects
ofthistimepiecehavebeendesignedforuseby
professionaldivers,forwhomeverysecondmay
be of crucial importance. Particular attention
hasbeenpaidtotherotatingbezelanditsergo-
nomiccontours,ensuringprecisehandling,even
whenwearing diving gloves. The bezel’s unidi-
rectional rotation avoids the dire consequences
thatcouldresultfromanyaccidentalmovement

Thewater-resistanceof thismodel isguar-

at its thickest for a diameter of 42mm. The
chronograph functions are also fully operable
underwater, thanks to thewater-resistantde-
signofthepushers.Thecase-backisstamped
with a diver’s motif echoing NEDU’s official
emblem.Aworldfirstinwatchmaking,theau-
tomaticheliumreleasevalvehasbeendirectly
incorporatedintothecrown.
ThispatentedBallinnovationhaseradicated
a potential surface liable to warp under the
effects of water pressure, thereby improving
the chronograph’s water-resistance even fur-

protectionsystemthat isusedonallEngineer
Hydrocarbonmodels. The heart of thewatch
houses the benchmark chronograph calibre
with a Ball RR1402-C automatic movement
thatcanmeasureandindicatealapseoftime

A special Porsche limited edition of 919 pro-
fessional timepieceswas unveiled byGeneva-
based brand Chopard to celebrate Porsche’s
returntoLeMans.
Named the Superfast Porsche by Chopard,
this flyback chronograph is based on the Su-
perfast’s chronograph’s bodywork. The dial
echoesvariousdetailsofthePorsche919Hybrid
whichcompetedintheLeMansLMPEndurance
WorldchampionshipinFranceinJunethisyear.
Itisstampedwiththe919logoat9o’clock.The
24-hourenduranceracewasthe82ndrunning
of thisevent,wonby theNo2Audidrivenby
Swiss-bornMarcel Faisler. Besidesmarking the
return of the Porsche family to this legendary
championship,italsoreinforcedChopard’scom-
mitmenttoautomotivemotorsport.
The timepiece is presented in steel and
the dial indications are hours, minutes, small
seconds, date, chronograph seconds hand,
30-minuteand12-hourcounters.Thechronom-
eteriscertifiedbytheCOSC.Entirelydesigned,
developedandproducedin-housebyChopard,
it has a mechanical self-winding movement

Inventiveness and innovation, as well as pas-
sion, are part of Cartier’s credo. Ballon Bleu
deCartierwasaddedtoitswatchfamilyseven
yearsagoandhasbeenaspectacularsuccess.
Alwaysproducedinsilverorgold,nostainless
steelmodelshavebeenmade.
Ballon Bleu had many unconventional
features, including its shape,whichwasnot
quite round, but had a curved bottom and
top, its crown set with the blue sapphires
which gave the design its name. It came in
avarietyofstyles.Encouragedbyitssuccess,
theprestigious brandnowpresents a varia-
tiononthistheme.
Ballon Blanc, in an 18ct, rhodium-plated
30mmcaseofwhitegold,hasaribbonoffive
rowsofbrilliant-cut diamondsnestlinggrace-
fully in the curve of the dial. The blued steel
hands are sword-shaped. Instead of the blue
sapphireonthecrownat4o’clock,this isset
withaflashofdiamonds,theroundedsapphire
crystal amplifying the time. Thebracelet con-

There is also a version in 18ct pink gold

Travel broadens themind, as the saying goes
– and for Kevin Friedman of brand Frankli
Wild,histravelsarereflectedinhiswork.He’s
visited40countries inthepasttwoyearsand
hisexposuretodifferentcultureshaschanged
his perceptions, as well as his approach to
designing jewellery. “You can’t help but be
inspired by your environment when you’re in
foreignsurroundings,”hesays.
An accomplished photographer as well,
Friedman’slatestbodyofwork–titled“Spring
Into Cuba”, which took 18 months to com-
plete–provides“snapshotsofCuba”andthe
exoticsurroundingsheexperiencedthere.The
imagescompriseaseriesoflargephotographs
onbrushedsteeland these, too, reflect some
alterationsinhisvision.Foronething,hiscol-
ourpalettehaschangedandisnowsofterand
moremuted–notevenredisasvividasitused
tobe.Nothingis“inyourface”:instead,there’s
a gentleness and subtlety which are in sharp
contrast to his early works for Frankli Wild,
which–whilestrikingandoriginal–werefrank
andwildindeed.
Inhisdesignwork too,Friedmancollects
muchofhisoneofakindmaterialsduringhis
travels,orsourcesthemfromearlierperiods.
Forexample,anecklaceiscomposedofsingle
earrings from the 1940s and ’50s – an era
whichhas contributedgreatly tohis current
interpretations. With the earrings clustered
together, the piece is distinctly retro. There
arealsofardaintierpieces,andotherswhich
areexuberantandalmost“bib-like”.AsFried-
manpointsout,awomanwhowearsoneof
theselargepiecesneedstobeself-confident,
withastrongpersonality.
Although not Afro-centric, some of the
beadwork is done by local exponents of the
art.Onebeautifulpiecefeaturesbeadedtassels
(whicharestronglysymbolicinAfricanculture)
intonesofsapphireblueatitsloweredge.On
the whole, though, Friedman’s moved away
fromAfricanprimarycolours.
Ebony wooden beads which he collected
onhis travelshavebeencombinedwithcon-
trasting materials such as crystal in a long
necklace.“ThematerialsI’veused‘talk’tome
and tellmewhat theywant tobe,”he says.
Dark red Swarovski crystals in gradated sizes
are the sole materials for an evening piece
whichwoulduplift thenecklineanddramat-
ic impact of the simplest outfit. Flowers and
shellshavebeenaconstantsourceofinspira-
tion:oneexampleisanecklaceoffloralshapes
inmutedpinksandyellows.
Friedman’smarketisequallyunconvention-

eceptional diamond of this colour to appear
on auction in recent years and ranks among
themostdurablegemseverseenontheblock.
The stone was cut from a 19,54ct rough
whichwasminedbyDeBeers,withthefinal
cutting completed inNewYork. Vibrant and
concentratedincolour,itisexpectedtocom-
mand the highest price per carat for a pink-
coloureddiamond.Ithasbeengradedbythe
GIAas“fancyvivid”, thehighestgrade fora
colouredstone.
Ever since the first discovery of pink dia-
monds in Indian mines centuries ago, these
coloured gems have been coveted by rulers
andprizedbyconnoisseurs.Therichdeposits
of famedGolcondaminesyielded theDarya-
i-Noor, a shimmering, pale pink diamond of
approximately 185ct which was table-cut,
itspavilionconsistingof largestep-facets. Its
present location is uncertain. Many believe
it to be in a vault of Sonali Bank in Dhaka,
Bangladesh,whileotherssay itcanbefound
among the Iranian Crown Jewels in Tehran.
But notmany ordinarymortals can aspire to
owningagemofthecalibrebeingauctioned.
Sothenextbestthinginpurplewouldbean
amethyst, agemstone thathasbeen revered
throughtheages.
It was discovered in the
19thcenturyand is located
ingeode rocks, themost
significant deposits be-
ing in South America
(Brazil and Uruguay),
withthethirdmostsig-
nificant supply in Madagascar.
The Brazilian treasure trove yielded a piece
weighing 200 g which is on display in the
WashingtonMuseum.
Amethystisasensitivepurplecolour–an
“extravagance in violet of the quartz fam-
ily” would be a good description – but it
can change colour if treated, according to
popularbelief.Foryearsithasbeencoveted
byroyaltyandecclesiastics.Itwasknownas
thestoneofcardinalsandoftenusedinbish-
ops’ rings,while Russian empressCatherine
the Great was said to have sent thousands
ofminerstolookforamethystsintheUrals,
whereitwasmined.
Some amethysts pale almost to colour-
lessnessindaylight.Thereasonforthisisnot
yet known, but radium radiation can return
themtotheiroriginalcolour.Thiscanhappen
ifthestonesareexposedtocertainlightsor
suddenchangesoftemperature.Othergem-
stonesinvaryinghues
ofpurpleincludesap-
phire, spinel, tanzan-
ite and tourmaline.
The colour range in-
cludesviolet,heliotrope, lavender,magenta,
mauve,mulberryorevena reddish-purple–
andinthecaseofourdiamond,pink. It isa
colourbestsetinplatinumorsilver.
In the traditional meaning of colours,
purpleisrelatedtoimaginationandspiritual-
ity. It symbolises power, nobility, leadership
and ambition. A survey has revealed that
75% of pre-adolescent children prefer pur-
ple toanyother colour–and
that includesmyyoungest
great-grand-daughter
Gabriella, aged four. In
terms of personality, if
you have a preference
for purple or violet, it is
thoughttomeanthatyou
are sensitive, compassionate, understanding
andsupportiveofothers.Youareafreespirit
(like Gabriella) who dislikes being part of a
crowd and doesn’t like to copy others – or
haveotherscopyyou.
Inancienttimes,adyeobtainedfromthe
mucous secretions of certain predatory sea
snailswas named royal purple, Tyrian purple
orevenTyrianred. Itwasreddish-purpleand
came in various shades, did not fade eas-
ily as a result ofweathering or sunlight and
wasprizedbytheRomansasanitemofluxury
trade.Asimilarspeciesofseasnailisfoundto-
dayontheMediterraneanandAtlanticcoasts
ofEuropeandAfrica.
Toconcludeonawhimsicalnote,in1905,
the poetGelett Burgesswrote the following
clerihewaboutthecolourpurple:
“I never saw a purple cow.
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you anyhow

Purple is a colour of many light and dark shades, most strikingly in the quartz family – but it is not usually associated with diamonds.
