The Book of Psalms
Please join Fr. Steve for his series introducing the Psalms of
the Old Testament beginning September 9th. It will be for five
Wednesdays at 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM from September 9th
through October 7th. He will introduce the types of psalms,
their structure, their use in ancient and contemporary liturgy and
their use in personal prayer. This is a Zoom presentation, so
please email Fr. Steve using his email address
[email protected] to register and to
receive the Zoom link to be able to access it. There will be an
evening version of this series upon completion of the afternoon
series beginning October 13th for five weeks on Tuesdays at
7:00 PM.
Sunday Mass Readings Bible Study
Each Friday at 3:00 PM, Fr. Steve will be doing a bible study
focusing on the upcoming Sunday readings. This will include
the background and setting of the readings from the Old
Testament, New Testament, the responsorial psalm and the
Gospel reading. We will also focus on possible reasons why
these readings are chosen by the Church for this particular
Sunday, what scriptures precede and follow a given reading,
who the audience is and what the meaning might be for today’s
hearers. This will be live-streamed each Friday and can be
viewed later in the video archives on the website, Facebook or
YouTube. Please join Fr. Steve for this breaking open of the
Word of God.
Understanding Mary Through the Scriptures
Fr. Steve will be doing a series entitled Understanding Mary
Through the Scriptures on the following dates:

We will look at Mary under her titles Mary Queen of Mercy;
Mary Queen of Angles; The Immaculate Conception; and Mary,
Ark of the Covenant. Much of the material will come from
Dr. Scott Hahn’s “A Biblical Understanding of Mary”
presentations. This will be a Zoom presentation, so you will
need to register by emailing Fr. Steve using his email address
[email protected]. You will receive a
Zoom link to access the presentation at the corresponding time.

Catechetical Sunday (weekend) is celebrated this year on
September 19/20. Observing Catechetical weekend is an
opportunity for all Catholics to rededicate themselves to the
mission of handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel
as a community of Faith. The day provides an opportunity to
celebrate those who do the important work of handing on the faith,
and an opportunity for all of us Catholics to consider ways we are
witnesses for Jesus Christ ourselves.

Each year, Catechetical Sunday has a unique theme. The 2020
Catechetical Sunday theme is rooted in Scripture. It stems from
Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: “I Received from the
Lord what I also Handed on to You.”

This year’s theme is an invitation to focus on catechist formation.
Catechists hand on the faith in their communities and the world as
witnesses of Jesus Christ. Through their work, many encounter
Christ and hear and respond to his invitation to new life.

Each person plays a role, by virtue of our Baptism in handing on
the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Parents are truly the
primary catechists of their children, They prepare the soil and
plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only
highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we
also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take
seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place
where faith is passed on to the next generation.

Our parish would like to thank all of our catechists, aides,
parents, grandparents, and guardians who dedicate their time by
sharing the Word of God through the word and example of your
faith. May you be strengthened to continue your growth through
prayer and reception of the Sacraments and assist in the growth of
the entire community of faith.
SAINTS PETER & PAUL CATECHIST OF THE MONTH
Kathleen Fairbanks Mitchell was born and raised in Queens, NY. She attended Our Lady of Hope
Elementary school in Middle Village, St. John’s Prep in Astoria and Queens College where she
studied English and Political Science. She obtained level 1 Catechism Certification by the VLCFF
and is working on her level 2. Kathleen has a background in recruitment working in various
industries including finance and healthcare. She is currently working as a health care recruiter for
the Mount Sinai Healthcare System assisting them with their staffing needs.
Kathleen has been teaching catechesis at Saints Peter Paul since 2010 and has taught every grade
level including pre-school. She has also assisted with the Sacramental Prep classes and retreats
and was the Vacation Bible School Director for eight years. When asked what she loves most
about teaching Catechism she would say, “I have particularly enjoyed watching the shy pre-school
students grow up through VBS and turn into strong young adults, confident in their faith and their
abilities to lead and teach others.”
When not working with the children, Kathleen enjoys cooking, spending time with her husband Michael, and son William, and caring
for her Basenjis. She also recently joined the fundraising committee of the Greenwood Park Bells Lake Community Club and is start-
ing a Model UN Club this fall at Our Lady of Hope Regional School, where her son attends 6
th
grade.
