letter from our priest

Dear Parishioners and School Parents,

Thank you for participating in this year’s auction. This annual event brings us together again furthering our relationships in the Christian community of life and love that we call St. Clare Parish. On its website, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops states that Catholic education promotes the development of the whole person through spiritual and academic formation based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Church hopes that our schools will serve both the local faith community and society at large by educating children, young people and adults who contribute to the common good by becoming active and caring members of the communities, cities and nation in which they live.

I am extremely grateful for all of you who contribute to this very important work that the Church accomplishes through you. While the auction provides an essential revenue stream by which education flourishes here at St. Clare, it also promotes new relationships and friendships among parents thereby strengthening the parish community as a whole. As you peruse this auction catalog, it is my hope that you find at least one irresistible item. Then, while bidding on it, you thoroughly enjoy the company of friends gathered together for an evening of camaraderie, benevolence and philanthropy.

letter from the principal

Dear Parents, Parishioners, and Friends of St. Clare,

It is with humble gratitude and sincere excitement that I welcome you to the 2013 St. Clare Benefit Auction! Thank you for joining us as St. Clare is Ready for the Spotlight. We are definitely ready to celebrate this warm, welcoming and wonderful community that we hold dear. Our St. Clare School and Preschool students at are at the center of this celebration, and tonight we come together in support of them — our most precious gifts.

Tonight’s paddle bids support two important causes: tuition assistance and facilities improvements. Tuition assistance allows us to ensure that our families who hope to provide a St. Clare education for their children have the opportunity to do so. It allows us to keep our students and parents in our St. Clare family, strengthening that sense of community that is truly what we are about. Additionally, your gifts to the facilities paddle bid will help us to care for and maintain our beloved building. As good stewards of our facility, we must keep this place in tip-top shape. Your children and those of the future deserve no less. Thank you for your generosity in support of these two very necessary causes.

Tonight we celebrate not just the here and now, but the future — the future of our children, the future of St. Clare School and Preschool, and the future of our entire parish community. We celebrate the efforts of so many who have tirelessly and selflessly made this evening possible in support of our children, and we celebrate the gentle care of our God who continues to shower us with abundant love and so very many blessings. Thank you for your steadfast support. Have a wonderful evening!

With much appreciation,

letter from the Preschool Director

Dear Friends and Family of St. Clare Preschool, School and Parish,

Welcome to one of the best nights of the year! The preschool enjoys being a part of this very special evening and looks forward to catching up with past families and meeting new ones as well. Being a part of this annual event has allowed us to participate in a wonderful community experience, while receiving enhancements to our preschool program. This past year we were able to use monies from the technology paddle to upgrade our classroom computers, purchase software and work on building a new website. We were very grateful to increase our funds available for our tuition assistance program; we were able to provide tuition assistance to ten of our preschool families who could not otherwise afford a Catholic preschool. We continue to be pleasantly surprised and extremely appreciative of the generosity of this community.

This year we will be sharing the paddle bids with the elementary school again. One of our goals this year is to bring new lighting into our preschool rooms and to be able to do some minor repairs of walls. Improvement of our facility each year helps us to provide a better learning environment and keep our building in good shape.

There will be a second paddle bid for tuition assistance. It is our hope that we can continue to support families that wish to have their child experience the loving, educational environment that St. Clare Preschool provides. Your generosity over the years has been felt and graciously accepted by the preschool and has impacted well deserving families. Thank you!!

A huge thank you to the fourth grade class, the preschool auction team, and the many people involved in putting together this special evening. On behalf of our teachers and staff, we are very grateful for the success of this night.

Most of all, we want to thank all of you, the generosity of everyone in the room, which will make dreams for our community, our children and families come true, and have a lot of fun in the process.

With many thanks,

Nancy Melzer Preschool Director

Auction chairs Elaine leback and jennifer sabido

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 20th annual St. Clare Benefit Auction. We’re so pleased to have you join us tonight at The Oregon Golf Club to celebrate and support our great school and preschool.

“Ready for the Spotlight” is the theme this year because we want to put the focus on St. Clare as we approach the Centennial celebration. With Old Hollywood glamour, we’ll shine the light on all the great things that happen at our school and in our community.

Our amazing team of volunteers has worked tirelessly to bring this event to life. Their dedication and energy is truly inspiring. It has been a privilege to work with the fourth grade parents and the entire auction team. They have been so positive and fun while giving so much of their time. We want to offer a huge thank you to everyone who has supported this auction with their time, their donations and their attendance at tonight’s event.

Last but not least, we would like to thank our wonderful and understanding husbands and families, for the support they have given us through this amazing journey.

There is no script for running this auction and every year brings a new cast of characters, a new set and a new director. And every year our great community comes together to put on a great event and support this wonderful school.

So take a moment to bask in the spotlight, enjoy a great evening and salute St. Clare.

Saint clare fast breakA. Reserved Parking in the Spring Garden Parking Lot“We are late, we are late, for a very important date.” No worries if you are late because you will have your very own reserved parking space for the entire year. This space is conveniently located between the front door of the school and the gym. Reserved for the 2013-2014 school year.

B. Reserved Front Row Pew at Christmas Eve MassHow do you like standing in crowded rooms with a very limited (if any) view of the main event? Yeah, we didn’t think so. So smarten up: reserve the front pew for your family so you can relax on Christmas Eve and let the soothing words of Fr. Steve’s homily flow over you.

C. Reserved Front Row Pew at St. Clare School Christmas ProgramThe BEST seat IS the front pew. To get up close for close-ups of all the children as they perform their hearts out, this is where you need to be. No need to stand in the pouring rain waiting for the doors to open exactly 30 minutes before go time, just to get trampled in the stampede for a good seat. Take your time at dinner and then stroll casually into the Church minutes, even seconds, before show time. You may feel a bit smug and that’s okay.

“Portrait of Eighth Grade”

Our eighth grade artists have given us the wonderful gift of themselves! Each square piece is representative of the artist’s personality in line, shape and color. The different heights of the blocks give this a sculptural feel. This abstract expressionist piece is set off by inspiring quotes in gold ink chosen by the eighth grade artists. This sophisticated and thoughtful cooperative painting is worthy of any gallery downtown.

fourth grade class art project

“Less is More (Visual Reflections of God)”

Each fourth grader meditated on a word they believed best described the feeling of God. The words were written on individual small papers and wet-on-wet watercolor techniques were applied. The small papers were in turn mounted on beautiful deep turquoise handmade paper and then veiled with a second beautifully woven piece of handmade paper. A third layer of archival paper was used for the final mounting. Professionally framed by Dick Blick.

Are you a portland foodie? You love food. You always have a running list of new restaurants to try, and you love to read about Portland chefs and culinary happenings around town. Here’s a sampling of some of Portland’s “Must Try” restaurants with a review from a St. Clare family that has named it one of their own favorites. $100 gift certificate to each restaurant.

Toro Bravo, 120 NE Russell St., Portland. Spanish inspired tapas restaurant that uses local farmers for their fresh ingredients. “Toro Bravo is a must on your restaurant list. Whether you are out for a date night, girl’s night or a larger group, it is a great dining experience. Don’t go if you are in a hurry though. Usually always a wait but just order a cocktail and endure because it is worth it.”

Tasty n Sons, 3808 North Williams, Portland. Another local neighborhood restaurant from the famed owners of Toro Bravo“If you like an eclectic menu with some of the best local farm fresh foods, you’ll love Tasty N Sons! Small or large plate with an amazing and creative flair. Quaint but lively atmosphere in an up and coming foodie neighborhood. You just can’t go wrong here!

Andina, 1314 NW Glisan St., Portland. A taste of Peru in the Pearl! Enjoy the warmth and contrast of the Peruvian culture and cuisine here in Portland. “One of the finest restaurants Portland has to offer. Superb in every way from food to drinks to service. The ambience is even better. Our thanks to Mama Doris and everyone there!”

Nuestra Cocina, 2135 SE Division St. in Portland. Translated simply as “Our Kitchen,” invites patrons to experience fresh, authentic flavors of Mexico with recipes that have been passed down through generations. “Nuestra Cocina never disappoints! A true authentic Mexican experience here in Portland. Consistently great food, and drink and with an upbeat atmosphere. One of our very favorites!”

Decarli, 545 SW Watson Ave., Beaverton. Italian-inspired with a menu that changes weekly featuring fresh seasonal ingredients from the Northwest. “Decarli restaurant in Beaverton is one of our favorites, and an absolute “go-to” option when downtown or east side seem like a hassle. The warm and lively atmosphere manages to come off as both relaxed and sophisticated at the same time. Excellent wines are hand-picked to highlight the seasonal, Italian-inspired menu. Don’t miss: polenta fries with gorgonzola butter, the beef shortribs braised in espresso, or any of the artisan pizzettas. Yum.”

St. Jack, 2039 SE Clinton St., Portland. Rustic French cuisine situated on a comfortable neighborhood corner in Southeast Portland, St. Jack’ s features both a traditional pâtisserie and restaurant in an unassuming 19th century home. “Let’s start with the fact that I love French cuisine...almost as much as I love French wine. This little bistro not only has a stellar bar, great food and patisserie, and exceptional service, but it is all brought home with great atmosphere.”

Pok Pok, 3226 SE Division St., Portland. Serving food found at pubs, restaurants, homes and the streets of Southeast Asia with the majority of the food coming from Thailand, and specifically from the North and Northeast of Thailand.

seventh grade class art project

“Words to Live by”

Courage, Faith, Hope, Life and Believe are words these progressive young artists have used to describe their feelings about life and their future. Each seventh grader took a photo of their own hand signing a letter. The contemporary Andy Warhol effect was achieved by applying skills the students have acquired using Photoshop. This moving piece is professionally framed by Dick Blick.

Money raised tonight will help us to care for and maintain our beloved building—including a restroom facelift, carpeting the BASC room, classroom carpet and floor covering for the stairs.
