The Resurrection Apolytikion - First Tone

The stone of Thy tomb was sealed by the Judeans and the

soldiers guarded Thy sacred and pure body, the savior arose

on the third day, granting life to the world and because of

this, heavenly hosts did acclaim Thee and called out giver of

Glory to Thy Providence who alone loves mankind.

Son of God who didst arise from the dead sing we to Thee

Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom) – Fourth Plagal Tone

Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the

EPISTLE READING

EPISTLE READER.....max lianos–Sunday School

Student

Let Us Attend…

Verse: Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us...Rejoice in the

Lord, O ye righteous.

Wisdom…

The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians

5:8-19

Let us be Attentive...

Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found

in all that is good and right and true), and try to

learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in

the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose

them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things

that they do in secret; but when anything is exposed

by the light it becomes visible, for anything that

becomes visible is light. Therefore it is said, "Awake,

O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall

give you light." Look carefully then how you walk,

not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of

the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do

not be foolish, but understand what the will of the

Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is

debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing

one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual

songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with

all your heart.

GOSPEL READING

The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 18:35-43

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind

man was sitting by the roadside begging; and

hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this

meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing

by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy

on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him,

telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more,

"Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus

stopped, and commanded him to be brought to

him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What

do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let

me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him,

"Receive your sight; your faith has made you well."

And immediately he received his sight and followed

him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they

saw it, gave praise to God.

MINISTRY NEWS

PHILOPTOHOS NEWS

POINSETTIAS FOR THE SHUT-INS:

Our Sunshine Chairman, Helene Ballas, will be ordering poinsettias

soon for the shut-ins. Please let her know if there is someone who

should be added to our list that would like to receive a plant for

some ‘Christmas’ cheer. You may call Helene at 818-642-8011.

The plants may be picked up outside the chapel on Sunday,

December 16th.

Outreach:

We are currently helping a number of individuals who are in

financial difficulties and others with illnesses. If you would like to

donate a gift card from Target, Walmart or Ralphs/Food for Less for

$25 or more, we will use it for our outreach program to help some

of these families and individuals. The holidays are always difficult

for those who are suffering, sick and lonely. Please help us

continue to help those who need us.

Our “Angel Tree” is up in the Narthex for Christmas gifts for the

needy. Your most generous contributions last year made a huge

difference in the lives of the families who received your presents.

This year we have a number of families that need our help again

and we know you will respond with love as you have in the past.

The holidays are a time to pray and we can offer a little ‘miracle’

in our own way. May we truly reach out to help our fellow man

and do the work of the Lord this holiday season with loving hearts

and tolerance for those who are suffering. We will be accepting

donations until December 9th.

Don’t forget our new ‘collection’ for the Los Angeles Mission “in

and out” people they serve. We are collecting ‘travel size’ items

such as shampoo, deodorant, mouthwash and lotions in zip-lock

small baggies. The Mission will hand these out to the people who

come in to get cleaned up, have a meal and return to the streets.

You may bring your donations to church on Sundays and put them

at the front door where we will have someone stationed to collect

your item. Thank you!

Wishing you all a very blessed holiday season!

With love in Christ’s service,

Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

MINISTRY NEWS (continued)

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING TODAY in the Maria Maniatakos

Pavilion.

Sunday, December 9th - Elections to the Parish Council and the

Audit Committee. Immediately following Divine Liturgy in the

Maniatakos Fellowship Hall…

Please make sure your stewardship is now current, so you may be

eligible to vote in December!

Get to know the candidates running for the

Parish Council…

Irene Andreadis - I was raised and grew up at St. Sophia which has

been my parish for my entire life. I sang in the Choir for 12 years and

served on the Parish Council for 9 years as Recording Secretary. I

would like to resume service to my Parish as my expression of

gratitude, humility, and love for my Lord for his countless blessings

known and unknown. I ask Him for his guidance in doing His Will and

His work for the good of our Parish, our orthodox faith and community

in whatever capacity he chooses for me.

Jeanine Hanna - It has been a unique honor and privilege to serve

on our Parish Council over the past 3 years; allowing me to grow both

personally and spiritually. After volunteering at our first Greek Festival, I

continued my service by helping restructure our front office and to fill

a temporary staffing need. Currently, I work in our church office two

days a week. I also serve as our Stewardship Volunteer Rep and our

Narthex Greeter, where I believe it is one of my greatest blessings and

personal satisfaction, meeting and greeting our parishioners new and

old! I couldn't feel closer to my church community and I so look

forward to the opportunity to continue to serve God in any way I can.

John Kopatsis - As an Orthodox Christian and a member of the St.

Sophia Cathedral family, I consider an honor and a privilege to be

given the opportunity to be of service as a potential member of the

Parish Council. Service arises out of the need to translate Christian love

into concrete gestures and it is the vehicle with which the mission and

the goals of the St. Sophia Cathedral community are accomplished.

The primary element of this service for me is the spiritual growth of

others. It is with helping others to grow spiritually that we can spiritually

grow ourselves. If elected, I am looking forward to assist our clergy in

fulfilling this goal.

Page 12: Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral · 2.12.2012  · melomakarona, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. Please help support your fellow parishioners who participate

12

Get to know the candidates running for the

Parish Council Continued…

Glenn Lianos - I have been a member of St Sophia for over 20 years.

My 3 children were baptized here and we have raised them in the

faith. My wife Antonia has been a Sunday school teacher for the last

seven years and my 2 sons, Julian and Max serve in the alter. I have

been active in Greek school and the Dance program. At this point in

time, I feel it is also my duty to "step up" and serve the church that has

served me as well as my family. I would like to donate my time to help

St Sophia continue to grow and thrive with an emphasis in keeping the

youth at church. Thank you for your consideration.

Ted Pastras - I have been a member of St. Sophia Cathedral for

more than 30 years and a member of the Parish Council since 1994—

currently serving as Vice President, and Chairman of Civic & Cultural

Affairs. I have also served as Security Director, Vice President, four

terms as President (1999-2002), Chief Program Coordinator for the BLQ

Development Project, President of the BLQ Business Improvement

District, and continue to serve as Chief Liaison Coordinator to City Hall

& the Mayor’s Office. In 1999, my wife & I created and developed the

L.A. Greek Fest. “I’m honored to have served in the Cathedral’s

development during the past twenty years and wish to continue

providing my talents and dedicated service to the future progress and

enrichment of our Saint Sophia parish community.”

Karen Sarames – I’ve had the honor of serving on the Parish Council

for the past 10 years. I got involved as a means to serve Christ through

his church. Throughout my life, the church has been there for me,

from the time of my baptism, through the years of Sunday school,

GOYA, Young Adults, choir, adult bible study, and the recent death of

my parents. Christ, through his church, has guided me morally

and spiritually, by providing education, moral guidance, fellowship,

and love. I wanted to give back to his church and to the community

the love and the support that were so freely given to me and I would

like to serve the church in the manner befitting my talents.

Dorothy Spirus - As a member of St. Sophia Cathedral for nearly 20

years, I've noticed a void in activities and functions offered by the

Cathedral that nurture involvement, friendship, and belonging for all

ages. I would like to serve on the Parish Council so I may be

instrumental in developing events that range from intellectual to

outright fun. My hope is to bring the entire community closer together

through increased interaction, whether it be through service or

celebration. Connectivity isn't just for electronic devices!

For those who are sick or suffering…

St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for

the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing

him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will

save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has

committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)

Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and

prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need
