Jubilee Year of Mercy June 12, 2016 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time On today’s Jubilee for Those Sick and Suffering Disabilities, Jesus encounters a woman who is “spiritually ill.” She is thus “disabled” from participating in Israel’s worshiping community or polite society. Bathing Jesus’ feet with tears, drying them with unveiled hair, anointing them (Luke 7:38) risk Jesus’ becoming “unclean.” Yet his mercy welcomes even such inappropriate behavior as her sincere manifestation of love: “Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace” (7:48, 50). Go not just in “peace,” but in shalom, the all-enveloping, life-changing assurance of God’s mercy. She is anonymous, “known in the city” only as “a sinful woman” (7:37). The character with name and religious title, “Simon the Pharisee” (7:36, 40), judges her harshly, but himself not at all, and thus forfeits God’s mercy. This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to self-examination. In which role do we most often cast ourselves, humble sinner or judgmental Pharisee? Jesus declares that only by an unfailing willingness to show mercy to fellow sinners can we hope to obtain mercy ourselves (see Misericordiae Vultus, 9). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet…” LUKE 7:44

Today’s Gospel calls us to consider how we serve God. Do we consume like the Pharisee who simply reclines at the table and expects to be served? Or, do we contribute like the woman who kneels before Jesus and washes His feet? Every day we must make a choice. Take or give? Consume or contribute? Recline or serve?

You may also fill out a new parishioner registration form which are located on the table in the Church narthex and on the St. Scholastica website: www.stscholastica.org.

Even if you are here infrequently, we welcome you to join our Parish Family.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Baptism Registered parishioners should contact the office for instruction. This should be done at least six months before the birth of your baby.

Marriages Registered parishioners should contact the parish office at least six months in advance of making marriage arrangements.

Sick Calls Please contact the parish office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.

God of the covenant, You called Abram to leave Ur of the Chaldees and guided him to the Promised Land.

God of the Exodus you led your people out of slavery in Egypt and brought them to a land flowing with milk and honey.

God of the Exile, you restored your people after their captivity in Babylon and settled them in the holy city, Jerusalem.

Watch over and protect all who travel.

Guide their steps with your outstretched arm, and at the end of their journey lead them safely home to their loved ones and friends. Amen.

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all

Catholics are not registered in a parish?

Please encourage your friends and family to register!

Registering is important because:

• If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all - especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?

• Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish.

• Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the narthex and on the parish website.

If your child or children have

reached the age of 21 and are away at school or no longer residing with you, please encourage them to register at a parish where they currently reside. Establishing church membership is very important. Should they be asked to serve

as a Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor, their parish of residence will need to verify their church membership and attendance and provide them with the required documentation. Please feel free to call the parish office at 746-9422 if you have any questions.

Week 4 The Healing Power of Confirmation

Dr. Scott Hahn presents the historical and biblical origins of the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). He provides an important guide for new Catholics, a source of renewal for "old hands", and a challenge to all of us to deepen our relationship with Christ through regular use of the Sacrament of Penance.

Parishioner Comments This is an outstanding talk on Confession that cuts to the heart of this great Sacrament of Mercy.

Father Joseph - Baltic, CT

This helped me to better understand scripturaly why confession is so important, and it gave me a desire to go to confession more often. I want to pass this information on to others.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s readings tell us about forgiveness of sins, really big sins, but their lesson is about living authentic lives. David has been given tremendous gifts by God and called to a life of leadership and service. Yet he commits adultery and murder. The woman in Luke is a sinner who has disrespected and wasted the gifts, the life, that God gave her. David and the woman sin because they are not living the lives that were given to them. Yet both are forgiven by God, who loves them and us despite our sinfulness. Jesus lives the life that he was given by God to live, difficult as that is. His life leads to his death and resurrection and because of this we are forgiven and saved.

Losing The Life Given David had been anointed and called to a life of leadership and service. Instead he lived as an adulterer and murderer. David’s actions were sinful. When David recognized that because of his sin, he had forsaken the life of leadership and service, he was forgiven. In Luke, the Pharisee who welcomed Jesus did not really understand who Jesus was. He did not offer him the symbols of hospitality—water for his feet, oil for his head—that all guests should be offered. Instead, an uninvited woman recognized Jesus. She understood that he was the One who could forgive her sins. She offered Jesus the water, the oil, the kiss that the host did not. She behaved like someone who knew, as Paul reminds us in Galatians, that the source of life, mercy, and forgiveness is Jesus.

Living The Authentic Life When we fail to live the life given to us by God, we deny the very sacrifice that Jesus made for our salvation. It is easy to see when we fail to live authentically. We sin. We rationalize our choices. We put ourselves first. We are afraid and we are captive to our short-sightedness. How do we know if we are living the life intended for us by God? The life that faith offers is an authentic life rooted in God, whose Son Jesus died and was raised for us. An authentic life reflects the value of what has been given for us, that is, the life of Jesus, sacrificed on the cross. We need only measure our lives by the standards that Jesus’ life reflects: we must act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with our God (see Micah 6:8). This is all that is asked of us.

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM: The Fortnight for Freedom is a two-week national prayer campaign to defend religious liberty called for by the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB.org). Fortnight for Freedom begins Tuesday, June 21st. The Litany for Freedom will be recited after each weekday Mass except on Friday, when the Litany will be recited before Mass after the Rosary. The Patriotic Rosary will be recited after the closing Mass on Monday,July 4th. All Parishioners are invited to participate. Pray to defend our religious liberty. Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing World, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of

Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude.

You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have

no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake

from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional

boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so

vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of

time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to

plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits

us.

Amen. [Written by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder), second Bishop of Lafayette (1956-1972), following Hurricane Audrey in 1957]

June 1 marks the start of the 2016 Hurricane Season.

Plan ahead:

Everyone needs to be prepared for the unexpected in the event of a storm in our area. Now is the time to plan ahead.

Mass Attendance:

All parishioners are urged to use good judgment when planning to travel to and from Mass. In the event that roadways are not clear and weather conditions are unsafe to travel, the faithful are reminded that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply when there is grave difficulty in fulfilling this obligation (see Code of Canon Law, Canon 1248 §2).

News and Updates:

If a storm threatens our area, please watch your local news for the latest updates. The diocesan website (www.dosp.org) will post the latest updates affecting our diocese. Our diocesan radio station Spirit FM 90.5 will post the latest updates affecting our diocese. Should the radio station go off the air, please stay tuned on your television at WFLA Channel 8 for updates.
