Priest Appreciation Pot Luck Dinner - Oct 28 Priesthood Sunday is celebrated annually the last weekend of October. This year our parish will have a pot-luck dinner in honor of our pastor, Fr. Jeff. We have also invited the retired priests that help celebrate our Masses. The dinner will be held on Saturday, October 28th after the 4pm Mass in the gym. The Knights of Columbus will be providing the meat for the dinner and the Ladies Auxiliary will

provide the desserts. All parishioners are asked to bring a side dish or salad to share and to come and enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship while thanking Fr. Jeff and our visiting priests for all that they do for our parish.

Save the Date—October 14 Come celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun (1917-2017). Please join us to pray the rosary and honor our Lord and Lady during this 100th anniversary. We will pray in both English and Spanish. The Rosary Crusade will be held at St. Sabina Parish on Saturday, October 14 at noon. Weather permitting, we will have the rosary outside, so please bring your lawn chair.

We are looking for Junior High and High School youth to help hold the banners for the rosary and prayers. We also need volunteers to lead a decade of the rosary in both languages. Those interested in helping please call Florencia Trejo for English 816-649-4483 or Gloria Garcia for Spanish 816-559-1253.

Annual Fair Trade Sale Millions of hard working people around the world are living in extreme poverty through no fault of their own. They simply lack access to the information, services, and infrastructure they need to participate as equals in the global economy. As a result, they are not earning their fair share of the wealth created by international trade. Support our “Fair Trade Sale” this November 4 and 5 in the gathering space of the church.

Catholic Cemeteries In the face of death, the Church confidently proclaims our Catholic belief that God has created each person for eternal life. In the celebration of the Funeral Rites, the Church affirms and expresses the union of the Church on earth with the Church in heaven in the one Communion of Saints.

The conclusion of the Funeral Rites and committal, celebrated at the grave, tomb, columbarium, or niche, is the final act of one’s family and the faith community in caring for the body of its deceased member and gives concrete expression to our belief expressed in the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.” We proclaim that the grave or place of internment, once a sign of futility, is transformed into a sign of hope and promise.

As a special ministry for Catholics and others within the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, our cemeteries provide consecrated ground for our families for the sacred rites of burial and internment. Our Catholic Cemeteries at Mount Olivet Kansas City or Mount Olivet St. Joseph, Resurrection in North Kansas City and Mount St. Mary’s, also in Kansas City, provide a fitting and appropriate resting place for our beloved deceased.

Important and tangible benefits of funerals in a Catholic cemetery ensure revering, honoring and commemorating the life of the deceased. In addition, burial in hallowed ground offers a sacred trust, perpetuating our Catholic Tradition expressing our belief in Christ’s saving Redemption and in the life of the world to come. Masses and prayer services are celebrated throughout the year in our Catholic cemeteries for our deceased loved ones, and these holy grounds are not re-sold to other corporations since the ground and buildings have perpetual care and maintenance.

For more information you may contact Mount Olivet, Kansas City at 816-353-1900; Mount Olivet, St. Joseph at 816-279-5005; Resurrection at 816-734-2356; or Mount St. Mary at 816-241-7633.

Donating Securities and Mutual Funds Are some of your shares of stock or mutual funds higher than when you bought them? This provides you a wise method of giving to St. Sabina Parish.

Donating appreciated stock or mutual fund shares is a strategic gift-planning method. In most cases, the donor receives an itemized deduction in the full amount of the fair market value (FMV) of the shares donated as of the date of the gift. This value is deductible up to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income and can be carried over for up to five years after the year of the gift. Please consult your financial or legal adviser.

Parish Auction Preparations We are seeking volunteers to help make our second Annual Parish Auction another success! We are working on forming both a procurement team and decorating team. If you have ideas and/or connections to great auction items, we could use your help on our procurement team! Do you love pinterest and getting creative? Share your talents with our decorating team. Contact Bridget Hernandez in the parish office if you can help us on either of these teams, or if you know of someone that would be a great addition!

Our Community Garden Needs Help Fencing materials and installation are needed to enclose the community garden from dining deer and ravenous rabbits. If you can help or know someone, please contact David Pierce 816-392-1110 or Michelle Rose 919-624-4407.

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests

known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in

Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 6-7

God knows what is on our minds already, but He also desires that we make a conscious effort to communicate with Him on these subjects. In addition, Paul points out that our prayers need to be infused with thanksgiving. We should not just petition the Lord and make requests. It is equally important that we think about, identify, and acknowledge our blessings. Stewardship is a life of gratitude, a way of living which encourages us to focus on gifts, not on problems and challenges all the time. If we strive to have grateful hearts, our prayers come much more easily, and we tend to be much happier and more upbeat in our lives. — See more at www.catholicsteward.com/blog/

Did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you may already be dehydrated?

Symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration include sticky mouth, tiredness, dry skin, headache and dizziness. Severe dehydration can cause confusion, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat and fever; this is very dangerous. Feeling thirsty is a clear warning sign that indicates a fluid deficiency. Often, elderly people don’t feel thirsty, which increases the risk that they may not be drinking enough.

Here are a few tips to help keep you hydrated.

1. Drink your water at different temperatures to see if you enjoy it more. Think about drinks you enjoy regularly and about what temperature you prefer them. If you enjoy warm tea, warming your water might make it more palatable. In contrast, it might be easier for you to guzzle ice water. 2. Eat fruits and vegetables that have a high-water content. Your food provides an average of 20 percent of your daily hydration -- the higher the content of water in your food, the more hydration it provides. Watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery and similar fruits and vegetables generally contain approximately 90 percent water weight. 3. Keep a water bottle with you. Sipping from a water bottle can seem less daunting than pouring a big glass of water and forcing yourself to drink it all. Whenever you think about it, take a drink from your bottle. An attractive bottle might make you less likely to “forget” your water bottle at home, too.

Finally, stop in the Wellness Center and find out how you can earn one of these lovely water bottles.

For the past three Sundays we have had parables addressed to the chief priests and the elders of the people concerning a vineyard. The first parable exemplified the owner’s generosity to his workers. The second parable encouraged work in the Lord’s vineyard by being faithful in action and not lip service. Today’s parable presents ungrateful tenants of the vineyard who are not faithful to the promises made to the owner. Each parable teaches something about who God is and what God desires.

The refrain for responsorial Psalm 80 specifies that the Lord’s vineyard is the house of Israel, the people of God. Isaiah in the first reading talks tenderly of how God cared for and tended the vineyard, taking great delight in the people. The people entered into covenant relationship with God promising fidelity and faithfulness, the good fruit of justice. However, the people were not faithful, producing instead the bad fruit of violence and destruction. Such bad fruit demands that God either prune or destroy the vine. Such drastic measures seem needed if good fruit is to come from the vineyard.

Matthew focuses Jesus’ vineyard parable on the tenants who were to maintain the vineyard, making certain that good fruit was forthcoming. However, the tenants, another image for God’s people, refused to live up to their promise to tend the vineyard and return the produce to the owner. Rather they desired the vineyard for themselves. To achieve their ends, the tenants went so far as to kill the owner’s servants who had come for the produce, as well as the owner’s son, the heir to the vineyard. The owner’s response can only be that of removing those tenants and giving the vineyard to others who will be faithful in producing good fruit.

All this may come across as God rejecting Jews and replacing them with Gentiles. This scenario, known as supersessionism, is not justified by the passage nor the broader context of Matthew’s gospel. The parable’s literary setting consists of Matthew’s Jewish community struggling with other Jews who do not accept Jesus as the messiah. These Jews see Matthew’s Jewish community as unfaithful to the covenant promises by following Jesus instead of being faithful to the Mosaic covenant. Matthew has Jesus narrate this parable to address the very issues that Matthew’s community is facing. The vineyard, the gift of God to Israel, will be taken away from those Jews who reject Jesus (the tenants who rebelled) and will be given to

Jews (the faithful tenants) who accept him as the long awaited Messiah. In this manner, Matthew instructs and supports the decision and commitment that his Jewish community has made in following Jesus. Thus, the broader understanding of the parable applies not just to Jews but to anyone, Jew or Gentile, who fails to produce good fruit.

While both the first reading and the gospel reading pronounce judgment on some of God’s people for not being faithful, Psalm 80 and the second reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians provide a way to move forward in our relationship with God.

Psalm 80 boldly expresses confidence in God’s abundant compassion and forgiveness, despite our lack of fidelity and follow through. The psalmist, aware of our guilt and fault, and acknowledging the need for punishment, still turns to God for understanding, forgiveness and compassion. The psalm petitions God to restore the people. Only God can bring new life to the people, restoring them so that they can attempt once again to be faithful and produce good fruit.

Paul supplements the psalmist’s confidence by asking us to “have no anxiety at all but in everything...make your request known to God.” Even when most aware of our infidelity and our unwillingness to produce good fruit, Paul asks us to place all our trust and confidence in God, the only one who can restore and renew us. God is always willing and ready to do so, if we only turn to God in confidence and hope, promising once again to be faithful and to follow through.

How do you relate to the Lord when you have failed to produce good fruit? This week, ask God to help you be faithful to your baptismal call and to be disciplined in working in the Lord’s vineyard, always striving to produce good fruit. Biagio Mazza, Pastoral Associate

Catholics are mostly exposed to the Bible through the Sunday Lectionary Readings. In order to help us all enter into the Bible through the Sunday readings, we offer study sessions that provide an opportunity to read, to study background to the readings, and to reflect on how to apply the readings to our lives. Our next Bible Study dates are Oct. 8th and 22nd at 10:30am in the conference room. All are welcome; bring a bible. To register, call Biagio at 816-979-3153.

ASSISTED LIVING
