What is Alpha?
What would you say if we said we don’t want you to attend? In a way,
its true. Alpha was designed for those ‘farthest off’ from the Church or
the life of faith. It is meant to present the basic message of the Gospel
to those with questions, who are searching and curious.
We encourage all members of the parish to take it, so you get
comfortable, know what it is, and feel confident in inviting family, co-
workers, friends and just plain acquaintances. Think of the kingdom of
God as a Mansion. Alpha is just the front porch. A place to have a
friendly conversation…and a place to meet Jesus, the owner of the
Mansion. More information later.
The first online Alpha program will begin Thursday, January 21ston Zoom.
For more information contact Tim Dawson at

St. Rose Faith FormationLet’s start with two short, unrelated stories and then bring them together. First, when in college, friends of mine would sometimes go out to malls, or to the old Wednesday cruise nights on VanNuys Bl. (doesn’t that sound nostalgic) and try to see if they could get in faith conversations withthose they met.
They reported that the most difficult conversations were with people they called “Winnebago’s”after the famous Recreational Vehicles. Why did they call them Winnebago’s? Because RV’s are‘totally self contained’ -they have everything they need. Or at least they think they do. They thinkthey have the ‘world’ beat. They have everything, or at least, its only a matter of time ‘til they do. Theidea of faith, or needing others, let alone God, is the last thing on their minds. Most of know thatattitude usually doesn’t last that long. As we go through life Paul Simon’s words that no man is anisland are as true today as it has ever been.
The second story is about JRR Tolkien, the famous Catholic author of The Lord of the Rings (LOTR).He invented a term for all of human life experience, particularly the experience of faith. He called it‘the eu-catastrophe’ or the catastrophe (sickness and death that afflicts us all) that is suddenly andgloriously reversed. He summed up our lives, and particularly our infirmities this way- our lives areoften “the long slow defeat, that ends in total victory.”
The season of Advent calls us to consider the heart of both these stories. The coming of Jesuspierces both our feelings of perfection and pain - of arrogance and despair. All in a child. Jesuscomes to us, answering our human longing not to be alone, our mistaken self-satisfactions and atthe same time, removing from us any defeat. What a great and beautiful God we have.

Mental Health Resources
The devastating effects of verbalabuse A study by Florida State Universityfound that children who were verballyabused are more likely to experiencedepression and anxiety. They are alsotwice as likely to suffer with mood andanxiety disorders throughout theirlifetime. Children who suffer suchabuse can go on to repeat the sameparenting styles they experiencedthereby continuing the cycle of abuse.Pay attention to the language you andothers use with your children. Breakingthe chain of negative behaviors startswith positive, healthy parent-childrelationships.
