Father’s Day

Father's Day was inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement the celebration of Mother’s Day and to hon-or and commemorate our fathers. As Catholic fathers, we hope to follow the teachings of Jesus who chose to identify God himself as the Heavenly Father. In what might be the world's most popular story of all time, Jesus described the traits of the ideal father in the story generally called "The Prodigal Son." In Luke 15:11-24, it will become clear that Jesus is identifying the father as God and the wayward son as each and every one of us. The traits of the father in the story stand out clearly: A good provider, owning a large farm with hired laborers and an abundance of material posses-sions with which to care for his family. A generous spirit, giving his son his inheritance before his own death. A deep concern for the welfare of his son, who chose to take his wealth and leave home for places unknown. A forgiving fa-ther who accepted his son, now broke and repentant, back into the family circle. A loving father who ran to his son, em-braced and kissed him and had a banquet to celebrate his return home.

I am very grateful for the role model my father was in my life. But I am even more grateful that, despite his own human imperfections, he was present to me, to my brothers and to my mother, offering a loving and stable home. Let us all remember and honor our own fathers, living and deceased and show them our love and support.

The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

This Solemnity, also called Corpus Christi, celebrates the Eucharist. Inspired by St. Juliana (1193-1258), a Belgian nun who had a vision of Christ, proclaims the truth of “transubstantiation” of bread and wine into the actual body of Christ during mass. The feast was first celebrated by her local bishop and then made an obligatory feast of the universal Church in 1311 by Pope Clement V. In the first reading Moses reminds the Israelites how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt and fed them in the desert with manna. St. Paul asks the Corinthians, is not the cup of blessing a par-ticipation in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread we break a participation in the body of Christ? In the gospel, Jesus tells the crowds that he is the living bread come down from heaven; the bread he gives is his flesh for the life of the world. His flesh is true food and his blood is true drink. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. It was an awareness that this gospel passage was literally true that led to my conversion to Catholicism when I was in college.

Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 John 6:51-58

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Coming right after the Feast of the Trinity, the cele-bration of the Body and Blood of Christ reminds me how much God loves us. The Father is willing to sacrifice his only Son. Jesus gives his life for us and sends us the Holy Spirit so that we can experience his forgiveness and share in his divine life. The Eucharist is the fulfillment of his promise that whoever believes in him will never die.

The story from Deuteronomy takes place as the Israelites are nearing the end of their forty years of wandering in the desert and are approaching the land that God will give them, a place overflowing with milk and honey, a place of peace and prosperity. Moses reminds the people that God has been guiding them and sustaining them throughout their journey. They have eaten manna, the bread from heaven that has nourished them physically in the barren wil-derness. Moses tells them not to forget all that the Lord has done for them, delivering them from slavery and pro-tecting them as he led them to the Promised Land.

The Exodus story is a foreshadowing of our deliverance from slavery to sin and death, and God nourishing us on our journey through this earthly life on our way to the heavenly kingdom. Unlike the manna which merely sustains the body, the Eucharist gives life to the soul. Jesus tells the Jews that their ancestors ate the manna and still died; but whoever eats the true bread from heaven will live forever.

Jesus tells us quite clearly in today’s gospel that his flesh is true food and his blood is true drink. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you do not have life within you. The martyrs of the early church wrote “Without the Eucharist we cannot live.” We would certainly still have our physical life. But without the faith and grace of the Eucharist our spiritual life is diminished and the image of Christ in which we are made will disappear. The Eucharist is the heart of our faith. Catholics believe that in this great mystery that we cannot fully understand, the bread and the wine truly become the body and blood of Christ. The Eucharist is the awesome wonder of our Ris-en Christ present in the world. It is a living participation in God’s acts of redemption. St. Paul rhetorically asks the Corinthians: The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the Body of Christ? He asks this as a way of reminding them of the obvious. The Corinthians, too, needed to be reminded of the great gift that God had given them.

Like the Corinthians and the Israelites in the desert we can forget the story of the wonders God has done for us. The wonder of receiving God’s own divine life at baptism fades away in the ordinariness of daily life. This is especially true when one is baptized as an infant, unable to appreciate the experience. While everyone has a greater self-awareness at the time of Confirmation, the wonder and awe at the indwelling of the Holy Spirit also fades away in the ordinariness of our daily routines. But the Eucharist is given to us always, every day of our lives if we wish it. At the celebration of the Mass we hear the Word of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit have our hearts opened to the physical presence of the Risen Christ in the Eucharist which gives us life. It is an awesome experience not to be missed or taken for granted. God will do marvelous things in our lives if we let him.

As a nation we celebrate Father’s Day. It is a day to appreciate family, especially the men who have taken care of us and shaped our lives. My father has been gone for twenty-four years. I continue to be grateful for all he did, and, more importantly, for who he was. My core values of integrity, hard work, respect for others come from my father (and my mother). Like many fathers, he worked hard to provide for his family and was not particularly demonstra-tive. As I grew older I realized that his love was always present underneath and that he was very proud of me and of my brothers.

On Friday we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. First celebrated in France through the efforts of Fr. Jean Eudes in 1670, devotion spread with the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1675 for devotion to become universal. In 1856 Pope Pius IX officially placed the Feast on the universal Church calendar.

The Peter’s Pence Collection will be held next weekend. This second collection goes to support the charitable works of the Holy Father. Thank you for your continued generosity.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

MERCY HOME THANKS THE GIRL SCOUTS FOR THEIR THOUGHTFULNESS

The Fourth grade and the Sixth grade girl scouts from St. Roberts’s displayed their thoughtfulness and generosity by donating cookies to Mercy Home’s kids. They asked their friends who bought cookies if they would be willing to donate cookies to Mercy Home. The scouts efforts resulted in Mercy Home being the grateful recipient of several cases of cookies. The sixth grade scouts brought their donation to Mercy Home and presented them to Fr. Scott. The girls took a tour of the Home and watched a video about one of Mercy Home’s AfterCare members and talked to Fr. Scott about the work that is done there. They also visited the Jesus the Healer Chapel. Thank you to the scouts and their leaders.

Stories from “The 5 O’Clockers” (Part II) By Nora Kerr (photo by Ashley Jablonski (8th grade))

Memories of SRB Past, Thoughts of the Present, and Looking Toward the Future

This is the second installment of our SRB Spotlight on “The 5 O’Clockers,” highlighting several of our long-time parishioners who also happen to frequent the 5pm Saturday evening mass. This is how they found St. Robert Bellarmine and what has kept them coming back year after year. Julie Gaskin’s family moved into the area in 1939 and she attended St. Robert Bellarmine for 1st through 8th grade. She remembers many school masses and the annual school Christmas pageant. “We had a lot of respect for the nuns. I got a great education here,” said Julie. Joyce Kosinski is another SRB “lifer.” “I’ve been here 67 years—all my life. I’m not ashamed to say it.” Joyce started kindergarten in 1954 and remembers a busy and lively school. “There were 800 students at the school at that time,” recalls Joyce. “There were two classes in each grade and each classroom had 50-60 kids in it,” recalls Joyce. “I graduated in 1967 one of 107 kids.” When her family first came here, they had their choice of parishes. They lived equal distances from three different parishes, but the school and special people of St. Robert’s won them over. Fr. Gillespie was pastor at the time, followed by Fr. Dowling. Joyce has given back much to the parish who gave her a wonderful spiritual and educational foundation. “In 1977, I was roped into becoming a lector,” she said with a smile. “I thought I was helping out in a special Thanksgiving mass and next thing I know, I’m on the schedule as part of the liturgy team.” This liturgy team played a key role after St. Robert’s (with a new church just built in 1969) burned to the ground on Mother’s Day, 1988. “To be there the morning of the fire and see it smoldering—I was overcome with emotion. But like the phoe-nix, we rose from the ashes,” said Joyce. The current church that stands today was rebuilt in 1989 and dedi-cated September 9, 1990. “To be a part of the dedication was very emotional.” Joyce and her husband Ken-neth Kosinski have since moved to nearby Niles just three blocks from another church, but more often than not, return here to celebrate mass each weekend. “I prefer coming here. I feel a sense of ownership with this parish.” Part of what keeps her coming back is our current pastor, Fr. Neil Fackler. “When Fr. Neil is on a roll, he can’t be stopped. He speaks from the heart. For me, the homily is very important. I don’t want some-one to tell me what to believe, I want someone to tell me what they believe and why. Fr. Neil is very good at that—speaking to the assembly in a conversational way.” St. Robert’s is doubly blessed with talented and inspirational priests, including Fr. Neil and Fr. Scott Donahue, who brings tales of Mercy Home youth into his preaching. But Ann Ouper credits Fr. Mike Goergen for bringing her to St. Robert’s. She has been a parishioner for 20 years. “We shopped around, but I was swayed by Fr. Mike and by St. Robert’s beautiful and simple church,” said Ann. Her children were all baptized here and attended religious education. Her husband James now serves as the parish’s Business Manager. “I got lucky,” said James. “I married into this parish.” James looks to the future and sees promise. “I see an evolution coming with more involvement and dynamic steward-ship.” As examples, James points to the growing numbers of adults participating in the parish’s religious education program and successful capital campaigns including “Renew My Church.” “I hope it will shake up a lot of people, and allow for transformation to happen.”
