Annual Catholic Appeal

The Annual Catholic Appeal supports financially disadvantaged parishes and schools, Archdiocesan ministries such as evangeliza on, human dignity, family ministries, religious educa on, con nuing educa on for priests, lay ministers and staffs, and Catholic Relief Services. The goal this year is $12 million for programs with an es mated addi onal $5 million in parish rebates. This is broken down at approximately: Parish and school financial support of $5 million, Archdiocesan ministries $5 million, Catholic Relief Services $700,000 and the cost of the Appeal $1.2 million.

Because historically most of the rebates go to the wealthiest parishes, the Archdiocese has changed the way they cal-culate parish goals. Twenty-three parishes earned over 50% of the parish rebates. In the past, every parish had the same target of 6% of their normal revenue. This year, the wealthy parish target is 8%, middle income parishes 7%, and poor parishes 4%. In addition, rebates will currently be assessed at 10% to fund the goals of the Appeal, with 90% re-turning to the parishes. We fall into the middle income bracket, so our goal has been raised to 7%, or $40,879.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Wisdom of Sirach, we hear that those who keep God’s commandments will be saved. God puts forth the choice to each person: good and evil; life and death. Whichever one he chooses shall be given to him. St. Paul tells the Co-rinthians that he preaches the mysterious, hidden wisdom of God. He quotes the prophet Isaiah that eye has not seen what God has prepared for those who love him. Jesus tells the disciples that he has not come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them. Therefore whoever breaks the least part of the law is guilty. He tells them that unless their righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees they will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

From the Pastor’s Desk

The scriptures today describe what a life of faith looks like in concrete everyday terms. The Wisdom of Sirach tells us that obedience to the Lord’s commandments gives life. St. Paul reminds us that God’s wisdom is greater than human wisdom and it is directed toward salva on. Jesus tells us that he has come, not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it, and reminds us that we must imitate his obedience to the Law if we wish to a ain the kingdom of heaven.

God does not place impossible demands upon us. Sirach tells us we have the power to obey God’s commandments which lead to salva on. Of course salva on comes through faith in Christ, which is the uni ng of our souls with his. The requirement to obey the commandments that the Lord gives us is the path to union with God himself. Not because the acts themselves merit salva on, but the spirit of desire to live in union with God, seeking his wisdom in our lives, leads to right ac on. These good deeds, and avoidance of evil deeds, are the fruit that shows the light of God to others (Jesus’ commandment in last Sunday’s gospel).

Sirach reminds us that God gave us free will. We have the power to choose life or death, good or evil, and that we will reap whichever choice we make. He also reminds us that we have the power to obey the commandments if we choose to do so. Sirach equates trus ng in God with the choice to act on God’s word. Because God’s wisdom is greater than ours, this can require courage to trust when we can’t see where the Lord is leading. So we are given the spiritual principle to develop the habit of virtue so that we can stay on the path that God has chosen for us.

All three of our Scripture writers give us the mo va on and the promise to stay on the path. St. Paul says that this mysterious wisdom of God has been revealed in Christ so that we can know the right road to follow. Our mo va-

on is the promise that God has prepared a place beyond imagining for those who love him. Jesus simply says that those who obey and teach the commandments will be greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

The reverse is also true: there are nega ve consequences for those who do not obey the commandments and fol-low God’s Law. Sirach tells us that we can choose good or evil and that our choice will be given to us. God does not command us to act unjustly nor give anyone a license to sin. St. Paul tells us that the wisdom of God is not the wisdom of the world, which will pass away. Implicit in his instruc on is that those who do not make the right choice of whom to follow in this life will not enter into the place that God prepares for those who do. Jesus tells us very clearly that, “unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven”.

God is not trying to scare us. Rather, faith is a choice. There is no such thing as passive salva on. Following Christ is an ac ve decision of the will that has to be lived in the circumstances of our lives. Developing the habits of vir-tue, doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing, allows us to follow the will of God, even when the ways of the world are pulling us in the wrong direc on. Most people are not “bad” people, but there are mes when all of us get spiritually lazy and take the path of least resistance to get along. This is dangerous if it becomes habitual and we no longer give much, if any, thought to the spiritual consequences of our ac ons.

The Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew pledging begins today immediately following the Cardinal’s homily. Please read the ar cle about the Appeal on page two. Thank you for all your support.

On Monday, the na on will celebrate President’s Day. As we remember Presidents Washington and Lincoln, let us work to restore civility and unity to our public discourse. All parish and school offices will be closed.

We will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirma on this Friday. It is our turn to host. SRB has 35 and OLV has 15 Confirmandi. Our celebrant will be Bishop Bartosic. Please keep these young people and their families in your prayers.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The Group Meets in the Convent Building

You Are Invited! Taizé Prayer service during Lent at St. Robert Bellarmine

Tuesday, March 3 - 5:30 PM This Lenten evening of Scripture, reflection, and song will focus on the three temptations of Christ (food, power, and wealth). Soup and bread will be shared after the prayer service. What is Taizé? It is several things, including an ecumenical monastic order founded in France in the 1940s. When prayed, Taizé is a form of prayer where the Scriptures are reflected and singing a short refrain. As the refrain is sung over and over, perhaps 15-20 times you can meditate on the text being sung. Two very commonly sung Taize refrains are Jesus Remember Me When You Come Into Your Kingdom and Ubi Caritas et Amor, Deus Ibi Est.
