The Spirituality of Lent

Lent is a season of grace when Catholics deepen their spiritual life through the intentional practice of the traditional disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The immediate goal of these practices is to purify our hearts, to be con-verted and re-formed more closely in the image of Christ so that we will able to participate in the resurrected life of Christ at Easter. The long-term goal is to incorporate these Lenten disciplines as a way of life so that we live the resur-rected life of Christ and so are made worthy to live with him eternally in the kingdom of heaven. A wonderful image of these Lenten devotions that I heard at a mission many years ago is that of coloring Easter eggs. The eggs are dipped in colored vinegar so that they are dyed beautiful colors. The more they are dipped the deeper the color gets. Just so with our souls. Each year during Lent we dip our souls and get colored a little bit in the beauti-ful image of Christ. The longer we do this, the deeper this image gets imprinted into our souls. Though the colors may fade a little during the year as the reality of our human condition presses upon us, each Lent we dip ourselves into these spiritual disciplines and are colored more deeply in the image of Christ. In prayer we raise our minds and hearts to God seeking to know his will for us. But the ultimate goal of prayer is sim- ply to be with God, growing into a more deeply intimate relationship of love and trust. In fasting we give up “things” to loosen our attachment to, and dependence on, them. The ultimate goal of fasting is to detach from whatever sepa-rates us from God. In almsgiving we share our blessings with those who are less fortunate in obedience to God’s com-mand and to atone for our sins. The ultimate goal of charity is to realize that we are all one in the body of Christ. In God’s kingdom there is no “mine” and “theirs”.

First Sunday of Lent

In the reading from Deuteronomy Moses speaks to the people, recounting their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. He is speaking at the harvest festival, reminding them that it was God who gave them this land of milk and honey. The people are to offer the first fruits of the soil back to God in gratitude for the blessings they have received. St. Paul tells the Romans that the Word of God is very near to them, in their mouth and heart. God’s salvation is realized when we truly believe his Word in our hearts and proclaim it with our lips. Today’s gospel is Luke’s version of Jesus’ tempta-tion in the wilderness. Jesus spends forty days in the desert in fasting and prayer. When the devil tempts him to turn away from God with earthly rewards, Jesus replies that salvation comes in covenant relationship with God alone.

Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Romans 10:8-13 Luke 4:1-13

First Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. As we begin our journey to the Cross and Resurrection, our scriptures remind us to recognize that God is the source of all our blessings. Moses reminds the people that it was God who delivered them from slavery and gave them a prosperous land for their own. St. Paul tells the Romans that God’s salvation is open to anyone willing to believe and trust in the Word of God. Lent calls us back to the Covenant, to put our trust in God and to live out his commandments. In the gospel, Jesus refuses Satan’s temptations and rebukes him for his presumption. Jesus tells him that we don’t live on bread alone (the things of this world), we worship and serve God alone (not the powers and values of the world), and that we are not to put God to the test (God does not tempt us; we are not to tempt him either). The gospel story ends with the devil departing from Jesus for a time. Sa-tan returns, of course, at the garden of Gethsemane. The reality is that we will be tempted throughout our lives. Our Lenten observance each year strengthens us to resist these temptations by helping us to focus on God’s goodness, mercy and love.

We spend the Forty Days of Lent preparing ourselves to enter into the Paschal Mystery. God invites us to share his divine life by our own participation in the death and resurrection of Christ. In baptism we are buried with Christ and rise with him to new life. Lent is a spiritual journey back to the waters of baptism, when we die to sin and turn back to God. Through the three-fold disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving we open our hearts to experience the mercy of God, to stand in wonder and awe at his love for us and to be drawn more deeply into this covenant relation-ship. Prayer is simply spending time with God. Fasting is the practice of abstaining from worldly goods or activi-ties that can divert us from relationship with God. Almsgiving is the practice of sharing God’s blessings with others, to show the face of God’s love to them, and thus we are able to experience his grace more deeply ourselves. In this Year of Mercy we are invited to heal our relationships with God and others.

We have many opportunities for prayer here at St. Robert’s to help us on our Lenten journey together. Our Tues-day evening prayer services and Friday celebrations of the Stations of the Cross are traditional devotions that help us focus our time with God. The Multi-Parish Mission will be held here on February 29 - March 1. We again have the “Little Black Book” of daily Lenten meditations. These little books offer a daily six-minute scriptural reflection on the Lenten Gospels. “The Best Lent Ever” is a daily e-mail program that invites us on a spiritual journey through Matthew Kelly’s Book Rediscover Jesus. Please see page four to sign up.

Fasting, or self-denial, is something that we each determine for ourselves. The Church has only two “official” fast days, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The ancient practice of the Church was to fast on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year, as well as abstaining from all meat and dairy products for the entire forty days of Lent. There are many ways to fast today. We can abstain from expensive foods or from treats such as sweets, soda and alcohol. There’s not much self-denial involved in substituting lobster for beef on Fridays. We can fast from television, the internet or electronics. None of these are bad in themselves, but fasting from them can increase our appreciation for them as gifts and also help us see that overdependence on them takes us away from God. Use of television, electron-ic games and smart phones takes nearly nine hours out of the average day in the life of American children. We can also fast from bad habits, such as habitual tardiness, impatience and criticism. I certainly have my share. The im-portance of this discipline is not to try to become perfect or “get good enough for God”. Rather, we are called to recognize our dependence on God and seek his help to grow in the image and likeness of Christ.

The practice of almsgiving helps us to remember that God has blessed us. When we see that others have greater needs, we should appreciate what we have been given. True gratitude prompts us to share our blessings. The prac-tice of tithing, giving back to God, helps us let go of our reliance on material security and our need to be in control. When I was working in Atlanta, the leader of our businessmen’s fellowship often said that we can tell what we value in life by looking at our checkbook and our daily planner. Lent is a good time to reflect on how we spend our mon-ey and our time and to realign our priorities with God’s will for us. Our Lenten Almsgiving project this year will again be for the children of the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti. We hope to have a speaker from the orphan-age with us on the weekend of February 27-28 when we will have a second collection to benefit the children.

I will have an update on the Archbishop’s plan for reconfiguration of the Archdiocese next week.

Have a Holy Lent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Renew My Church

Archbishop Cupich has written a column in the Catholic New World and Catolico on the Archdioc-esan planning process. “Renew My Church” is an archdiocese-wide process to strengthen parish vitality for the long-term future. This process will continue over the coming months and years and will be carried out in wide consultation with the clergy and laity. The Archbishop’s article was published in the February 7 issue of the Catholic New World which will arrive in subscribers’ homes this week, and also may be found on the Archdio-cese of Chicago’s website: www.archchicago.org in English, Spanish and Polish.
