FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

In the reading from Deuteronomy Moses speaks to the people, recounting their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. He is speaking at the harvest festival, reminding them that it was God who gave them this land of milk and honey. The people are to offer the first fruits of the soil (the biblical tithe) back to God in grati-tude for the blessings they have received. St. Paul tells the Romans that the Word of God is very near to them, in their mouth and heart. God’s salvation is realized when we truly believe his Word in our hearts

and proclaim it with our lips. Today’s gospel is Luke’s version of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. Jesus spends forty days in the desert in fasting and prayer. When the devil tempts him to turn away from God with earthly rewards, Jesus replies that salvation comes in Covenant relationship with God alone.

LENTEN TUESDAY EVENING PRAYER SERVICES

Our Tuesday evening Lenten Prayer Services will provide opportunities to quiet our minds and hearts to help us more deeply experience the loving presence of God on our lives. Using scripture, song and moments of quiet meditation to guide our prayer we hope to create an oasis in the midst of our daily routines to bring our minds back to God and to ex-perience the peace that only Christ can give. Each celebration will take place at 7 p.m. All are welcome and encour-aged to attend one or all of these celebrations.

From the Pastor’s Desk Today we celebrate the first Sunday of Lent. As we begin our journey to the Cross and Resurrection, our scriptures remind us to recognize that God is the source of all our blessings. Moses reminds the people that it was God who de-livered them from slavery and gave them a prosperous land for their own. St. Paul tells the Romans that God’s salva-tion is open to anyone willing to believe and trust in the Word of God. Lent calls us back to the Covenant, to put our trust in God and to live out his commandments. In the gospel Jesus refuses Satan’s temptations and rebukes him for his presumption. Jesus tells him that we don’t live on bread alone (the things of this world), we worship and serve God alone (not the powers and values of the world), and that we are not to put God to the test (God does not tempt us; we are not to tempt him either). The gospel story ends with the devil departing from Jesus for a time. Satan returns, of course, at the garden of Gethsemane. The reality is that we will be tempted throughout our lives. Our Lenten ob-servance each year strengthens us to resist these temptations by helping us to focus on God’s goodness, mercy and love.

We spend the forty days of Lent preparing ourselves to enter into the Paschal Mystery. God invites us to share his di-vine life by our own participation in the death and resurrection of Christ. In baptism we are buried with Christ and rise with him to new life. Lent is a spiritual journey back to the waters of baptism, when we die to sin and turn back to God. Through the three-fold disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving we open our hearts to experience the mer-cy of God, to stand in wonder and awe at his love for us and to be drawn more deeply into this covenant relationship. Prayer is simply spending time with God. Fasting is the practice of avoiding the worldly goods that divert us from relationship with God. Almsgiving, acts of charity, is the practice of sharing God’s blessings with others. Through acts of love and kindness to others we show the face of God’s love to them, so we are able to see the face of God (experience his grace) more clearly ourselves.

We have many opportunities here at St. Robert’s to help us on our Lenten journey together. Our Tuesday evening prayer services (see page two) and Friday celebrations of the Stations of the Cross are traditional devotions that help us focus our time with God. We again have the “Little Black Books” of daily Lenten meditations. These little books fit in your pocket and offer a daily six-minute scriptural reflection on the passion narratives.

Fasting, or self-denial, is something that we each determine for ourselves. The Church has only two “official” fast days, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The ancient practice of the Church was to fast on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year, as well as abstaining from all meat and dairy products for the entire forty days of Lent. There are many ways to fast today. We can abstain from food treats such as sweets, soda and alcohol. We can fast from televi-sion, the internet or electronic games. None of these are bad in themselves, but fasting from them can increase our appreciation for them as gifts and also help us see that overdependence on them takes us away from God. Many peo-ple turn to “comfort” foods to avoid dealing with emotional stress. Use of television, electronic games and surfing the internet takes 7.5 hours out of the average day in the life of American children. We can also fast from bad habits, such as habitual tardiness, impatience and criticism. I certainly have my share. The importance of this discipline is not to try to become perfect or “get good enough for God.” Rather, we are called to recognize our dependence on God and seek his help to grow in the image and likeness of Christ.

The practice of almsgiving helps us to remember that God has blessed us. When we see that others have greater needs we should appreciate what we have been given. Gratitude prompts us to share our blessings. The practice of tithing, giving back to God, helps us let go of our reliance on material security and our need to be in control. Scripture tells us that almsgiving covers a multitude of sins. But the main reason for charity is that God commands it. Charity comes from the Latin word for love. Since God is love, when we act in charity we grow in the image of God. Charity is more than just financial. Acts of kindness and giving our time to help others is often the greatest gift we can give, especially to the lonely. Our Lenten Almsgiving project this year will again be the McKenna Technical Institute (training school) for the children of the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti. We hope to have a speaker from the or-phanage with us on the weekend of March 2-3 when we will have a second collection to benefit the children.

Next Sunday our RCIA candidates and catechumens will celebrate the Rite of Sending at the noon mass and then trav-el down to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election as they are formally enrolled to prepare to receive the Easter Sacra-ments. Please keep them all in your prayers.

Have a great week and a blessed Lent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are be-tween 18 years and 59 1/2 years of age.

Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permit-ted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thurs-day. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

Office of the Archbishop

As you know, Lent begins this year on February 13, Ash Wednesday. In 2013, we keep Lent

in the context of the Universal Church’s Year of Faith and also of our archdiocesan Year of Sunday Mass. All of these observances come together in the traditional Lenten practices of fasting, almsgiving and prayer.

To fast is to go without, to empty ourselves, in order that the Father might fill us with what

we need, so that our lives might be renewed.

To give alms is to extend ourselves, indeed to go beyond ourselves, so that the Holy Spirit might endow us with the caritas that is aimed at bringing about the Kingdom of God.

To pray is to continually seek, day after day, a fuller relationship with Christ, who is the way,

the truth, and the life. This desire is most manifest, and most directly satisfied, when we gather for Sunday Mass. Being filled with what we most deeply need, being endowed with Christian love (caritas), and growing in a closer, more intimate relationship with Christ is what the Church, the Body of Christ, celebrates every Sunday around the altar of the Lord.

By the threefold discipline of fasting, prayer and almsgiving, the Church keeps Lent from

Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday, when the Paschal Triduum begins. All of the faithful and the catechumens preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil should incorporate these disciplines into their lives. Failure to observe penitential days totally or ignoring a substantial number of such days is seriously sinful.

Throughout Lent, in charity, let us keep one another and the needs of the world in prayer.

Fraternally yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Page 6 1st Sunday of Lent

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canoniza ons, but also to communicate to you a deci-sion of great importance for the life of the Church. A er having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essen al spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by ques ons of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Pe-ter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry en-trusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I re-nounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pon ff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in elec ng a new Supreme Pon ff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

STATEMENT BY FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE, OMI ON THE ANNOUNCED RESIGNATION OF HIS HOLINESS, POPE BENEDICT XVI

Pope Benedict XVI has, in all circumstances, placed the will of God for the good of the Church before every other consideration. That same resoluteness of purpose speaks in his statement announcing his resignation from the Chair of Peter.

He has taught with clarity and charity what God has revealed to the world in Christ; he has handed on the apostolic faith; he has loved all of God’s people with all his heart. He has now shown great courage in deciding, after pray-er and soul-searching, to resign his office at the end of this month.

With the gratitude of sons and daughters in our hearts, we ask the Lord to bless him and give him strength, as we begin to pray now for the one who will succeed him as Bishop of Rome, Successor of Peter and Vicar of Christ.
