Collec on for Re red Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago Our re red priests have touched the lives of many Catholics in Chicagoland. They were there in cri cal mes of sickness, family difficul es and death. They were there in the joyous mes of Bap sm, Eucharist, Confirma on, Matrimony and anniversaries. There are over 200 re red archdiocesan priests, more than a quarter of the total of all priests serving in the archdiocese. Collec-

vely our re rees represent over 11,000 years of service to our people. Normal re rement age is 70 for Chicago priests. Unless there are major health issues, most con nue to help out where they can. Many re red priests live in rectories and assist the par-ish on a regular basis. Many more con nue to celebrate Sunday Mass, marriages, bap sms and funerals, and visit hospitals regu-larly. Without their dedica on, many parishes would not be able to offer the current number of Masses and sacraments. This collec on is solely for the re red priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. We receive no funds from the Religious Re rement collec on taken up in December for the religious sisters, brothers and priests. We will spend over $2.3 million this year alone to provide this care. Expenses now exceed revenues by more than $1 million per year. We need your assistance. Please help. God bless you for your generosity.

Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Old Testament author a ests to Wisdom’s divine origin. Wisdom is everlas ng, glorious, resplendent in majesty. God’s Wisdom is personified as a woman who looks a er God’s people, making her rounds in the city streets and im-par ng her help to all who seek her. St. Paul reassures the Thessalonians that, when Christ returns at the end of me, those who have fallen asleep in the Lord (those who have died in faith) will rise; the believers who are alive will be gathered up to be with the Lord forever in heaven. In the gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the kingdom of heaven and the ten maidens awai ng the bridegroom before the feast can begin. The bridegroom was delayed and all ten of the maidens fall asleep. Five of the maidens (“the wise virgins”) had brought flasks of oil for their lamps; the other five (“the foolish virgins”) did not. When the bridegroom finally arrived in the middle of the night, the wise virgins were able to light their lamps. The foolish virgins had to leave to buy oil, but found the door to the wedding locked when they returned. Jesus warns his listeners to be prepared because no one knows either the day or the hour.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we hear of our need to seek God’s wisdom so that we may be prepared for his coming. As we approach the end of me (liturgically), we are called to ponder our own mortality and our place in eternity in light of our rela-

onship with Christ. Preparedness for the Lord’s coming is really nothing more (or less) than seeking and doing God’s will as our response to God’s own love for us.

Faith is the belief in God’s goodness and mercy. Faith manifests itself in our living out of that realiza on in imita-on of Christ’s self-giving to us. In the Old Testament, Wisdom (the personifica on of God) seeks out her people

and is available to all who seek her. God is ac vely seeking a rela onship with us, offering the promise to look a er those who are looking for her. St. Paul gives the assurances of faith to the Thessalonians that Christ (the Wis-dom of God) will take to his heavenly kingdom all who live and die in faith. In the gospel parable, Jesus uses the symbol of the lamp as our rela onship to God. The wise maidens, those who have a good supply of oil, are those who nurture their rela onship with God, so that when he comes their light will shine brightly. The foolish maidens, those who do not nurture their rela onship with God, will run out of oil, their lamps will burn out and they will be shut out of the wedding feast and the kingdom of heaven will be closed to them.

No ce that in the parable all the maidens, both the foolish and the wise, fall asleep wai ng for the bridegroom. This is comfor ng because God does not want us to be anxious about his return at the end of me, but rather to be faithful. When the bridegroom returns, the wise maidens (those who have nurtured their faith and thus have a good supply of oil) simply trim their lamps and enter the feast.

The All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance was held this past Monday evening. While we remember all of our dearly departed, in a special way we remember our loved ones who have passed away in the past year and pray together in solidarity with their families. Thank you to our lectors and volunteers who participated in our celebration.

Leon Mika, who passed away earlier this year, was inadvertently let of the list of our beloved deceased on the cov-er of last week’s bulletin. Apologies to Mary and all of Leon’s family for the oversight.

A Big Thank You! To all the Volunteers who make possible our sacramental celebrations. Sundays, Funerals, Weddings, Daily Mass, Baptisms, special Rites — these dedicated folks are always here to help out. As the pan-demic continues, we need everyone who can to step up to volunteer, particularly younger families in good health. With the holidays coming up, we will need more help with these celebrations. Please come out to serve the parish that serves you and your families.

Renew My Church Update: The Prebyteral Council and the RMC Executive team are looking at the other parish groupings in our deanery before making a final recommendation to the Cardinal. At this point it is not certain when that decision will be made or announced. While November 11 was the original target date, it may be post-poned until sometime in early January, depending on the discernment of these other parish groupings.

We hope to be able to celebrate the Holy Days and holidays in the church, despite the recent surge in reported Covid infections. We have received some guidelines from the Archdiocese and will let you know the schedule and procedures as soon as we have them finalized. All Archdiocesan schools will go to complete E-learning for the first two weeks in January to allow families and staff to travel over the holidays and shelter-in-place safely for 14 days upon their return. This does not apply to the church, but all those who travel for the holidays are encouraged to follow the quarantine protocols upon their return. Please cooperate for the health and safety of our parishioners.

The Collection for Retired Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago will be held at all the masses today. Please drop your envelope in the collection box when making your regular Sunday donation. Your generosity is deeply appreci-ated. Please see page two for more information.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Out of an abundance of caution and concern for your health (the parish), St. Robert Bellarmine Parish will NOT be holding a Thanksgiving Food Drive this year nor will we be accepting any food donations. If anyone still wants to donate food, we encourage them to donate directly to the St. Cyprian Food Pantry located at 6535 W. Irving Park Road.
