All Saints Day / All Souls Day On All Saints Day we remember all those who have gone before us in faith, having witnessed to us the presence of God in our lives. In the Book of Revela on, St. John has a vision of the end me, when all the faithful will be gathered around the throne of God. In his First Le er, St. John tells the faithful that we do not know what we shall be like in heaven, but that when it is revealed we shall be like God and see him face to face. Ma hew’s gospel story of the Be-a tudes promises the kingdom of heaven to those who imitate Christ’s virtues on earth. Revela on 7:2-4, 9-14 1 John 3:1-3 Ma hew 5:1-12a On All Souls Day we commemorate all of our faithful departed, remembering Christ’s promise to raise them up on the last day. The Book of Wisdom encourages the people, saying that the just are in the hands of God. The faithful must have hope in their own immortality by trus ng in God. St. Paul writes to the Romans that "hope does not disappoint" because God’s love has been given to those who believe. God proves his love for us in that, while we were yet sin-ners, Christ died for us. In the gospel Jesus tells the crowds that no one who comes to him will be rejected. Finally, the Lord says that everyone who sees the Son and believes will have eternal life and be raised on the last day. Wisdom 3:1-9 Romans 5:5-11 John 6:37-40

Thir eth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sirach tells us that the Lord hears the cry of the orphan, the widow and the oppressed. The prayer of those who will-ingly serve the Lord, those who are "lowly", are heard by God. St. Paul writes to Timothy that the me of his death is at hand. He has competed well and has finished the race. He has kept the faith. The Lord will rescue him from evil and bring him safely to the heavenly kingdom. Jesus, warning against those who are convinced of their own right-eousness, relates the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector who went up to the temple to pray. The Pharisee thanked God that he was not a sinner. The tax collector stood in humility and asked God to be merciful to him, ac-knowledging his sins. Jesus says that it is the tax collector who went home jus fied, not the Pharisee. Those who ex-alt themselves will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 Luke 18:9-14

Page 3: Saint Robert Bellarmine · 10/10/2019  · Jesus makes this point much more directly in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee’s prayer is a proclamaon

From the Pastor’s Desk

Our scriptures today remind us not only of God’s jus ce, but also of his mercy. As in last week’s readings, we are again encouraged to be persistent in prayer. The kicker in today’s readings is that we need to admit our need for God’s mercy in order to receive it. This is not a new teaching, but it is a good reminder that we cannot take salva-

on for granted. Though redemp on in Christ is a free gi , we must truly humble ourselves and seek the Lord in sincerity of heart.

Sirach tells us that although the Lord is a God of jus ce and knows no favorites, he is not deaf to the cry of the poor and the oppressed. He hears the pe ons of those who serve him willingly; the cry of the lowly pierces the heav-ens and does not withdraw un l the Most High responds.

St. Paul tells Timothy that he has competed well, he has finished the race, and only the crown of righteousness awaits him. And the Lord, who is the just judge, will award it to him. His listeners would have known that, because it is the winner of the race that receives the crown as a sign of his victory, St. Paul is speaking metaphorically, tell-ing them that, because he has persevered in faith, God will rescue him from evil and bring him safely to the heav-enly kingdom. St. Paul is not claiming to have earned salva on, but because he poured out his life so that others might hear the Good News and be saved, he has put all his hope in the Lord’s promise of mercy and salva on.

Jesus makes this point much more directly in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee’s prayer is a proclama on of his own righteousness in keeping the commandments; thus he claims salva on as something God owes him. The tax collector knows that he is a sinner and simply asks for mercy. He doesn’t look up to heaven to engage God as an equal, he stands far off, with eyes downcast to pray. Jesus says that the tax col-lector is the one to go home jus fied. His humble dependence on God’s mercy, his recogni on that he does not deserve it, is the faith that gains him the kingdom of heaven. Jesus says that the Pharisee did not go home jus fied (he does not receive salva on) because of his arrogance. Those who exalt themselves will be humbled. Those who do not seek God’s mercy cannot receive it.

The Parents’ Associa on Bingo Night was a wonderful me, with almost 200 people in a endance to enjoy the games. The food and the companionship. The event raised over $3,000 to benefit the school. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the evening possible.

The Bellarmine Bash was a rousing success. I was so glad that we were able to bring it back on campus to celebrate our parish community. Nearly 200 people enjoyed an evening of revelry and fellowship, connec ng with familiar faces. We hope to have photos available for next week’s bulle n.

On Thursday, our country celebrates Halloween. Originally called All Hallows Eve, the medieval church believed that it was the me when all the souls of those who were not buried in consecrated ground roamed the world seeking release. It was a very scary me, when people believed that these ghosts and other spirits would not only frighten the living but try to steal their souls. Historically many people were denounced as witches who cast evil spells on people. This was all supers on with no basis in fact. Today it is a holiday for children, simply for make-believe and fun. Please have a good me and stay safe. I ask adults to be careful and watch out for the children.

The Church celebrates two major feasts this week. Friday, November 1st is All Saints Day when we honor all those who have shared with us a path to holiness. Our masses are at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. This is a Holy Day of Obli-ga on. Saturday, November 2nd is All Souls Day when we remember all those who have gone before us in faith. Our regular mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. Our annual Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated next Monday, No-vember 4th at 7:00 p.m., honoring those who have died in the past year as well as prayers for all of the beloved deceased. There will be a table for memorabilia of those who have died that will receive a special blessing. Re-freshments will be served a er the mass. All are welcome.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
