Fourth Sunday of Easter

St. Peter continues his Pentecost speech in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles. His Jewish listeners have been cut to the heart upon hearing that Jesus, whom they crucified, was truly the Christ. When they ask what they should now do, Peter tells them to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Those who do so will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. About 3,000 people accepted his message and were baptized that day. In his first letter, St. Peter con-tinues his exhortation to his followers. Knowing that there will be trials and sufferings in this life, he advises them to imitate Christ, who suffered for them and left them his own example. Peter counsels them to be patient in suffering, since it is by Christ’s wounds they have been healed. In the reading from John’s gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees that he is the Good Shepherd who takes care of his flock. The sheep know his voice and they follow him. When the Phari-sees still do not understand, Jesus tells them plainly that he is the gate through which those who enter are saved.

Acts 2:14a, 36-41 1 Peter 2:20b-25 John 10:1-10

St. Robert’s now has a few Assistive Listening Devices available. Please see an Usher if you would like

to use one during mass.

Fourth Sunday of Easter Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, reflecting Jesus’ promise in the gos-pel to always shepherd his flock. The passage from John’s gospel contains an incredible promise and challenge for all believers. The promise is that he gives his followers eternal life and that they will never perish. The challenge is that this promise is only made to those who recognize his voice and follow him. In the Gospel reading, Jesus refers to himself as the gate to the sheepfold where we may enter and be safe. In his first letter, St. Peter tells his listeners that they had gone astray like sheep but have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of their souls, that they have come back through the gate into the pasture of eternal life. Jesus refers to himself as the Shepherd who pro-tects his flock. The sheep hear his voice and follow him. Our psalm response, today, the 23rd Psalm, tells us that “the Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing that I shall want.” Jesus says that he is the fulfillment of this promise when he says that he came that we might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10).

These are great promises that should give us hope and peace. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I fear no evil for thou art with me. When we face difficult times, people or circumstances, we are to rest in the Lord and claim his promise. Jesus doesn't tell us that hard times won’t happen to us. He says that he will be with us in those times. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. The rod is his teaching, the staff is his protection from sin and evil that have no power over our souls when we take comfort and trust in the Lord. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. This is both the greatest promise and the greatest challenge that Christ gives us. The promise: God’s mercy and peace will always be with us and he freely gives us the gift of eternal life. The challenge: to see it, believe it and live it.

Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice. We hear his voice through the proclamation of sacred scripture. We hear in the Acts of the Apostles the story of St. Peter preaching the good news to the Jewish people in Jerusalem for the feast. He tells them to repent and be baptized. About 3,000 persons accepted the message in response to his preach-ing. St. Peter tells his people that, because of Christ’s death on the cross, his followers are free from sin and can now live for righteousness (salvation). Those who have believed are healed and have returned to the shepherd and guardian of their souls. We are told that all who were destined for eternal life came to believe. The ones who are destined for eternal life are the ones who truly believe and live that faith. Listen again to the words of the gospel: “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”

The promise that all of us should cling to is Jesus’ words, “I have come so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” Truly believing this promise and being willing to place our hope in his Word enables us to follow St. Peter’s exhortation to be patient when we suffer for doing what is right and good.

Congratulations to all our first communicants and their families. Congratulations to all our children who received their First Holy Communion yesterday. I want to recognize our Religious Education Director, MaryEllen Cassel-man, all the Religious Education staff, catechists, teachers and volunteers who worked so hard throughout the year to prepare the children. Fifty-eight children received the sacrament for the first time and over 750 people were in church for the celebration. This is truly one of the high points of the year. Several visitors commented about how warm and welcoming our parish is. It is nice to be recognized by others.

The May Crowning celebration will be held this Friday, May 12th, at 7 p.m.. The children are preparing a reverent and joyful celebration to honor our Blessed Mother. This is one of the highlights of the month dedicated to Mary. All are welcome.

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day. I would like to extend my warm wishes to all moms, grandmothers and godmothers. May this be a special day for them. Our Respect Life Group will host their Flower Sale to raise money for the Women’s Center. There will be a second collection for Catholic Charities, There is a renewed urgency for this collection since the state continues without a budget and owes Catholic Charities over $30 million dollars for ser-vices already received.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL TECH 2017 TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION AT ILLINOIS STATE CAPITOL, MAY 9, 2017

The annual “Students for the Information Age” TECH 2017 event will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Illinois State Capitol Building in Springfield. Hundreds of students and teachers will represent schools from throughout the state. Students will show the public and members of the Illinois State Senate and House of Representatives how technology is being used in the classroom to increase student engagement and improve achievement. Along with other elementary students and high school students we will highlight the crucial role that technology plays in education. Using technology increases collaboration, critical thinking, persistence, and problem solving. Brandon Dudas, Joe Bendig, and Kevin Meyering, from St. Robert Bellarmine Elementary School, will pre-sent their work in the afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. They created their projects in our school’s Computer Club. Brandon’s project connects programming and electronics. Using a kit, called Makey Makey and the Scratch programming language, Brandon will connect a target to a computer. Players throw a ball at the target and score points when hitting it. Joe Bendig wrote a program in Scratch that using the computer’s camera tracks the player’s movements. On the screen is a ball, moving randomly. When the camera detects the user’s hand “hitting” the ball, a point is scored. Kevin Meyering enjoys programming and art. He created scenes where the player manipulates a Mario char-acter to move, turn, and jump from one scene to the next. Joe and Kevin are constantly making improve-ments to their programs. All three students have also written Scratch programs that have a robot stop, turn on a red light, and backup when sensing an obstacle. Think Google driverless cars! This program was part of the work in their regular computer class. All students from third grade through eighth worked on this program and many others. We are very proud of our students!
