From Father George’s Desk…This weekend our civil calendar brings us to the celebration of Fathers’ Day.

The true vocation of fatherhood is often obscured and underappreciated in our society today. Fathers are often looked upon as

providers and disciplinarians, but it does not mean that children should feel distant from or fearful of their fathers. To get a more

proper understanding of fatherhood (or motherhood, for that matter), consider our relationship with the Risen Christ. In the Eucharist

he offers up his body and pours out his blood for the salvation of the world; he gives of himself for us...motivated purely by love.

True fathers, biological and spiritual, do the same for their children. Sadly, many children grow up today with a poor model of father-

hood or without any kind of father figure in their lives at all! All the more reason, then, for us to honor and celebrate the vocation of

fatherhood. God the Father loves, protects, and cares for us, His children. Let us pray for all earthly fathers to do the same!

To all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and all other fatherly types, Happy Fathers’ Day! May God bless and strengthen you

today and always to be faithful to the marvelous vocation to which you have been called!

The coronavirus lockdown forced us to postpone several significant sacramental moments over the past few months.

We celebrated the first of these rescheduled moments last Sunday as we welcomed our newest parishioner, Jennifer Pecora,

who has been faithfully preparing since last fall to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. She also received the

sacrament of confirmation and would normally have made her first communion, however, she is delaying reception of communion

until next month so that she can make her First Holy Communion with her daughter, who is part of this year’s First Communion

Class. Congratulations to Jennifer and her family and a big thanks to our entire RCIA team—catechists and sponsor—who have

been so generous with their time and sharing the journey with our newly initiated.

We’re only $500 from the parish goal for the 2020 Diocesan Lenten Appeal. As of June 15, our total stood at

$67,500 in pledges and gifts (99.3% of our parish goal of $68,000) from 249 households (33% of our parish). Our parish share

sits $9884 and grows with each gift...everything we raise through the end of 2020 remains in our parish—assessment-free—to do

work that we need to do here at the parish. Thanks to everyone who has responded to this year’s appeal. The active phase of

this year’s appeal is winding down but you may still return your pledge or gift by mail or online by going to our parish website and

clicking on the “donate” button at the top of the page.

As we try to get parish life back to as normal as possible, I would like to meet with the members of the Parish Pastoral

Council on Tuesday evening at 6:30PM to get ourselves back on track. Before the shutdown we were digesting all of the input

from January’s Parish Assembly as the next step in developing a pastoral plan.

This Wednesday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.

The actual date of John’s birth is not known. Nevertheless, because

in Luke’s Gospel the angel Gabriel told Mary at the Annunciation that

Elizabeth was already six months pregnant, tradition has placed a six

-month interval between the birth of Jesus and the birth of John.

Some have discerned a cosmic significance in the placement of this

feast. Just as the birth of Jesus is celebrated at the winter solstice,

so the birth of John is celebrated at the summer solstice. After the

birth of Jesus the days get longer, but after the birth of John, the days

get shorter. Thus, the universe recalls the truth of John’s saying

concerning the Messiah: “He must increase; I must decrease.”

May our parish family grow ever more united in faith and love so that,

like this herald of the Messiah, we will always make ready the way of

the Lord...St. John the Baptist, pray for us!
