A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week MOVIES – DOCUMENTARIES

The Faithful Traveler in the United States: East Coast Shrines

With the shelter-at-home guideline, we have canceled travel plans and may, if not already, grow tired of looking at the same four walls. A comedian even quipped, “I am going to sleep in my guest room and call it a road gig.” We are looking for ways to do things differently and many people are being quite creative. A thought I that has been stewing in my mind is with many parishes live streaming their Mass we can attend Mass in well-known Cathedrals or small country chapels. As we have gone virtual with all aspects of our lives, I invite you to make a virtual vacation. Just think no need to spend countless hours in a car or airplane, no need to make reservations and buy tickets, or no waiting in lines. Planning is still needed but it is only a mouse click away. “Travel” to a new place and experience something new. Some sites require a subscribed account, but many have opened their material to the public during this time. Also, like when on vacation, you seek out the church in the area. You can attend Mass and celebrate with the parish in the area you are virtually visiting. Search for the dio-cese of the area and on the website you can find a parish locator that can link you to the parish site where you can see if they offer a live streamed Mass. Another resource with educational options is www.esc3.net/Page/1241. I also found many sites when I searched for “virtual experi-ences during coronavirus.” I even found a link to “visitHoustonTexas.” Maybe you can see a familiar place in a new light. We pray for a quick end to the pandemic, but until that time comes we must continue to be creative in things we can do and places we can visit. May God’s blessing overflow in your life at this time and happy traveling.

April: The Blessing of Seed and Rain... Catholic Rural Life.. Our health and our lives depend on the sprouting of seeds and water to ensure their growth. Through the nurturing of seeds, then harvesting and eating of their produce, we receive God’s choicest blessings. Saving some of the new seeds allows us to continue this miraculous cycle each year. Just as seeds cannot grow without water, so the cycle of rain blesses us, and allows the water to be replen-ished in the ground. From the beginning, You called us to the honored task of being workers in your garden. Let us seek God’s guidance in planting seeds of love in our lives that will grow through the years into living words of your Son. Let us pray… Loving God, the Spirit of Life hovered over the waters and began the great work of creation. Bless the waters of this earth. Let them fall again from the sky at the proper times so that our gardens and fields may yield abundantly, and all growing things may thrive. Bless also the seed, pregnant with life. Let them show us the Easter mystery of new life coming from death and burial. May they burst forth soon with verdant growth from earth, rain, and sun. Through the rain and these seeds, bring us to a new awareness of your presence in and around us, as we joyfully live in the knowledge of eternal resurrection. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING - Acts 2:14,36-41

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven raised his voice, and pro claimed: “Let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you cruci-fied.” Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, “What are we to do, my brothers?” Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, eve-ry one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.” He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.

SECOND READING - 1 Peter 2:20-25

Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an ex-ample that you should follow in his footsteps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten;

instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

GOSPEL - John 10:1-10

Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shep-herd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”
