PASTOR'S NOTES TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

26—27 August 2017 Page/Página 2

Saint Augustine-August 28 St Augustine was born in 354 in Thagaste (now known as Al-geria) to a pagan father and a Christian mother – St Monica. In a search for truth he ex-plored many philosophies and theologies, though he rejected Christianity. In Milan, he heard Bishop Ambrose preach and in 387 he and his son were bap-

tized by him. He returned to Northern Africa and established a monastic community and in 391 was ordained a priest. Five years later, Ambrose was chosen bishop of Hippo and for thirty-four years he served his diocese with au-thority and compassion. His vast writings (more than one-hundred books and five-hundred ser-mons) earned him the title, doctor of the church. © Creative Ministry Resources 2011 He said what? When I met Pope Paul VI, he mentioned that he had read The Power and the Glory. I told him that it had been condemned by the Holy Office. "Who condemned it?" "Cardinal Pissar-do." He repeated the name with a wry smile and added, "Mr. Greene, some parts of your books are certain to offend some Catholics, but you should pay no attention to them." —Graham Greene Have a great a week and I pray that our Lord continue to bless you with his abundant Love and for the protection of our Patron, Peter the Apostle.

In Christ’s Peace,

Our gospel for this weekend takes us to the re-gion of Caesarea Philippi, a predominately non-Jewish area. Today, it is part of present day Syria. Interestingly it is here where Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do the people say that I am?” Their responses were John the Baptist, Elijah or Jerimiah. For Jesus, this was not quite enough, perhaps because their response was indicating the type of messiah they expected. So, he presses his disciples by asking them, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter speaks up and declares Jesus as being the “Son of the living God”. The question that Jesus asks the disciples is a question he asks of us today and every day. Our response reflects our relationship with our Lord. More importantly, how we live our lives reflects truly who we believe Jesus to be. How then do we live our lives in such a way that we act on that belief? Recent events in our country (and in other parts of the world) calls into our belief that Jesus is the “Son of the living God”. In Charlottesville, many of the participants, sadly, professed to be Christians, followers of Jesus. Yet their shouts of hatred and bigotry, for me, do not reflect the “Sonship” of Jesus. Because of this element, our young people are looking to us for guidance. In some sense, the young are asking us, in the voice of Jesus, “Who do you say that I am?” Hopefully each of us will respond with “Son of the living God.” Our response will help teach our young to respect all peoples, their race, ethnicity, culture. language etc. But our young will not only look at our words, they will look to how we live out our beliefs in word and deed in private and in public. It reminds me of the words of Roy H. Williams who said, “If you want to know what a person believes, you need

“But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ,

the Son of the living God.”

I have lived a long time, and the longer I live the more convincing proofs

I see that God governs in human affairs. —Benjamin Franklin
