The practice of tithing provides a regular reminder of your dependence on God. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to re-member God’s faithfulness and enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of our needs.

Memorial Gifts of $1,000 or more in remembrance of a deceased friend or loved one are acknowledged on the Memorial/Commemoration board in the Narthex. Email the parish office [email protected] for assistance with Memorials and commemorations.

In full compliance with Vatican directives and Archdiocesan guidelines, low-gluten communion hosts are offered at each Mass

for those who have special concerns regarding wheat and wheat products. Directions for receiving the low-gluten hosts will be given at the time of the Commun-ion Rite. Page 3 - 0146

Archbishop Lori promotes civility in political and church discourse as he criticizes the divisiveness that has found its way into Catholic commentary.

AUG 8, 2019 at the Knights of Columbus 137th Supreme Annual Convention

Divisiveness has found its way into Catholic commentary, with some websites challenging the pope’s Catholicity and legitimacy, referring to the Holy Father simply as “Bergoglio.” Others openly dissent from the church’s teaching on a wide range of issues or mock those with whom they disagree.

In his (August 8) address to the Knights of Columbus, Archbishop Lori pointed to polls showing that people are “fed up” with anger and division that “runs rampant in our politics and what passes for entertainment.” He asked his brother Knights to support a civility campaign organized by the Knights of Colum-bus. “The anger and polarization that are sadly so much a part of our culture now also are finding their way into the life of the Church.

“Anger is not righteous when its purpose is merely to defend an ideology,” Archbishop Lori cautioned, be it of the right or of the left. Still less is anger righteous that employs “evil tactics” to attain its goals, specifically, the sins of calumny and detraction, he said. “Calumny consists in making false and defamatory statements about others,” the archbishop explained. “Detraction consists in broadcasting actual faults of others for no good rea-son.

“Winning an argument or making a splash in social media are not good reasons to muckrake,” Archbishop Lori said, “to search out and publicize the faults of people one disagrees with.”

The archbishop said he and his fellow Knights can start making a difference by getting their “own house” in order, beginning with their minds and hearts “that can so easily be overtaken by unrighteous anger towards others people, including those who have harmed us.

“When that spirit of peace which flows through Christ in the Holy Spirit lives in us,” he said, “then we are equipped to lead differ-ently, not so much by the exercise of power but by persuasive attraction of goodness.

“As the largest fraternal order in the world and the largest lay Catholic organization,” he asserted, “we can have a lot of influ-ence on our society, on the culture at large, on our politicians, and on those who write and speak divisively.” Father Fitzpatrick’s editorial comments: I have been a Knight, proudly, since 1975. In the parish where I grew up and in the parishes where I have served, Knights demonstrated all the heroism of which we are capable and all the flaws to which we are subject.

In our parish the Knights have been a strong support for our parish pastoral plans over the years. They contributed to construction, fostered vocations, aid the efforts of Charitable Outreach and show us how to have fun doing it! In the coming year I invite your support for the Knights events. I also encour-age young Catholic men 21 years of age and older to join our Knights of Columbus Council.

I expect the Knights, and all of us, to take Archbishop Lori’s words to heart. If you talk about others unkindly or mockingly, just stop it! If you are involved in Calumny or Detraction, go to confession!

“The only investment I ever made

which paid consistently increasing dividends

is the money I have given to the Lord.”

Music Ministry

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 17 & 18, 2019

First Reading Jeremiah 38: 4 - 6, 8 - 10 In those days, the princes said to the king: "Jeremiah ought to be put to death; he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them; he is not interested in the welfare of our people, but in their ruin." King Zedekiah answered: "He is in your power"; for the king could do nothing with them. And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, which was in the quarters of the guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

Ebed-melech, a court official, went there from the palace and said to him: "My lord king, these men have been at fault in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, casting him into the cistern. He will die of famine on the spot, for there is no more food in the city." Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die.

Responsorial: Psalm 40 (for 7 a.m. Mass only)

R. Lord, come to my aid!

Second Reading Hebrews 12: 1 - 4 Brothers and sisters: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. Gospel Luke 12: 49 - 53 Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) meets on the first and third Monday of each month in the Bethany Rooms (Mtg Rms C&D) near the Parish Office. New members are always welcome. Our next meeting is Monday, August 19, at 7 p.m. The topic will

be “The Bible: The Book of Revelation, the End Times, The Feast of the Lamb.” We begin with prayer based on the Sunday readings followed by teaching and discussion. Our time is guided by Keith Kibler, Nancy Schneider, Deb Reif, Jan and Todd Smith, along with Fr. Fitzpatrick. Our candidate and potential catechumens this year include folks from a wide range of ages and religious backgrounds, and from no particular religious background. All persons 16 years and older are welcome to join us on any Monday evening.

Calling All Singers! The Adult Choir is searching for new members. High school age students are welcome to join as well! This would be a great time to join the choir. We rehearse on Wednesday nights at 7:15 p.m. Ministry in music is not only very rewarding in

your own personal life, but you will also discover a new ap-preciation for the value of working in unison with others as you focus on glorifying God with "one voice." If you have ever been involved in choir and/or worship ministry, then I don't have to tell you what a joy it is to sing to the Lord in worship, while leading others into that place of appreciation and worship for the God we serve! We are excited about the things God has been doing in our Choir as we continue to minister here at St. Peter, and look forward to welcoming new members to the Choir as we share the gift of music with others. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Veronique Hadfield at 610-952-2587.

Bereavement Support Group: The fall ses-sion of the Bereavement Support Group begins on Wednesday, October 2. The group meets for seven sessions on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Bethany Lounge. The Support Group is a peer ministry that

offers information about the grief process while providing an opportunity for people to share their thoughts and feel-ings in a supportive environment. If you know someone for whom this may be helpful, give them some encourage-ment to attend – even offer to go with them. If you have any questions or would like to register for this program, please contact Shavaun McGinty at 484-786-8528 or [email protected].

Would you like to be an altar server? Are you in 4th - 12th grade? Are you interested in helping your parish? Altar server registration forms can be found in the Church Library, in the Altar Server mail slot, to the right as you enter. Please take a registration form, fill it out, and replace the completed “folded” form back in the slot. Practice dates: Monday, October 7; Tuesday, October 8; Tuesday October 15; and Wednesday,

October 16. Practice times: 4:45 - 6 p.m.

Outreach Commission

The Serenity/AA Group meets every Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Bethany Lounge. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

The Cancer Support Group meets at 11 a.m. in Meeting Rooms SS. Drexel & Neumann. We offer support to anyone diagnosed with cancer, anyone who is presently undergoing treatment, has com-

pleted treatment, is a family member and/or caregiver. Our next meeting is September 14, at 11 a.m.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul: In today’s Gospel Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my

anguish until it be accomplished! Your gift to the Socie-ty to assist those suffering in poverty will help set the earth on fire with the of God’s love. St. Vincent de Paul Helpline is 610-470-9090.

All Aid for Friends volunteers: If you have not yet realized it, the AFF freezer has been moved to a new location in the Celebration Center hallway across from the restroom hallway. During office hours, it

may most easily be accessed by entering through the furthest door by the barbecue grill. The freezer is on the right just after the first double door.

Cooks: As the warmer weather approaches, "please" keep the meals coming even if the freezer looks full. We are now serving about 17 people which means we need more than 92 meals each week. There are some soup containers because we have one friend in particular who likes the soup even in the summer.

Visitors: Thank you for your dedication! In the summer months, if you will be away, please try to deliver enough meals to cover the time if your friend can fit the meals in their freezer. If not or anytime you are unable to deliver meals, please contact Ellen at 610-384-7160 or ecerritelli@comcast for a substitute.

Please help feed the hungry

Good Works: We are St. Peter Parish volunteers who join many other local Christian church groups in performing home repairs. We reach out in love and

friendship to transform substandard houses into warmer, safer, and drier homes, and by doing so, turn despair into hope. The team welcomes new volunteers of all skill levels. For more information or to be a part of Good Works, call Jim at 610-496-1393 or email him at [email protected].

Community Gardens: Our Church Garden is growing again. Lots of different crops will be grown through October. Planting has begun! Stop over anytime to see what’s happening. If you are interested in participating please email Barbara at [email protected].

you’d like to gift with one of our handmade shawls or lap blankets, let us know. We weave prayers into every piece as it is being made; we ask God to bless the recipients and bring them comfort knowing He is near and they will remain in our prayers. NOTE: There will be no First Friday evening gatherings during the summer. Check the Sunday bulletin calendar for specific days and times. Contact Jan Smith at [email protected] or 610-269-1756 for more information or to gift someone.
