Do You Know Why Do We Do This in Mass? THE SIGN OF THE CROSS Christians often make the sign of the cross over people, like during baptism, confirmation, penance and bless-ings. Is The act is called sign, cross or also cross yourself if it is more reduced. It is a simple gesture but full of meaning. The sign of the cross is a confession of our faith: God has saved us on the cross of Christ. It is a sign of belonging, of possession. When we make this sign of the cross on a person, it is as if we said: I am baptized, I belong to Christ, he is my Savior, the cross of Christ is the origin and the reason of my Christian existence. The first to make the "sign of the cross" was Christ himself, who "stretched out his arms on the cross" (Preface of the Second Eucharistic Prayer) and "his outstretched arms drew heaven and earth the indelible sign of his Alliance »(First Eucharistic Prayer of Reconciliation). If the OT (Old Testament) spoke of those marked by the sign of the letter "tau," in the form of a cross (Ez 9: 4-6) and the Apocalypse, it also names the mark that the elect carry (Ap 7,3), we , Christians, in making on our body the sign of the cross we confess as a community of followers of Christ, who saved us on the cross.
Fellow Christians: Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. You may however, ap-proach the altar with hands crossed on your chest to receive a blessing from the priest.
