Do You Know Why Do We Do This in Mass? PENITENTIAL ACT: General Confession The third form that we find in the Penitential Act, is one of the oldest and most used prayers in the Church, the Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy). The first thing we notice is that, although we find this expression in the Latin dictionaries of the Church, it is not Latin, but Greek. The Latin form is Domine miserere, an expression that perfectly translates the words Kyrie eleison. These invocations focus on Christ and his saving work; because He is the one who takes away the sin of the world, the source of all Christian reconciliation. We know that, around the 6th century, the Kyrie was already at Mass, but its content and place in the liturgy changed. With the reforms of Vatican II, the group of three invocations and three responses was recovered, such as the beginning of the litany, and since it is part of the Penitential Act, it is important to remember that it celebrates the abundant divine mercy. You who have been sent to heal the afflicted hearts: Lord, have mercy. Or Kyrie, eléison, You who have come to call the sinners Christ, have mercy Or Christe, eleison, You who are seated at the right of the Father, Lord, have mer-cy, Or Kyrie, eleison You were sent to heal the contrite of heart: Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison. All: Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison. Priest: You came to call sinners: Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison. All: Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison. Priest: You are seated at the right hand of the Father to inter-cede for us: Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison. All: Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thankgiving is around the corner! Make a gift in honor of or in memory of someone for whom you are thankful. As Catholics, we are richly blessed in many ways. On Thanksgiving, we pause with friends and family to say thank you to God for our abundant gifts. Consider making a gift to the parish endowment fund in memory of or in honor of someone for whom you are very thank-ful. A gift to the parish endowment fund in their name will benefit the parish forever. For more in-formation, please contact Juliet Greco at the Cath-olic Foundation: [email protected] or 404-497-9440.
