The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever. And this word is the good news that was preached to you. (1 Pt. 1:24-25) In the passage above, the apostle Peter draws on the words of the prophet Isaiah (Isa. 40:6-7) to comfort and strengthen the Christians in Asia Minor (present day Turkey). These new Christians were undergoing some form of persecution that included slander, ridicule, suspicion of disloyalty to the state and possibly more severe types of suffering (3:16-17; 4:4, 12-19). In such a time of fear and uncertainty Peter sought to build them up in a living hope based on the unchanging promise of God to deliver His people who have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ (1:19). As the Gospel was turning the world upside down in Asia Minor in the 1 st century, so would it in Europe in the 16 th century. The work of the Lutheran reformers to proclaim the pure Gospel was being met with great resistance. Like the Christians so many centuries before, the Lutheran reformers found comfort and strength in the unchanging Word of God. As the Pope and the Emperor used force to try to stop the efforts of the reformers, the Latin slogan: Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum (“the Word of the Lord remains for- ever”) became a source of comfort. This motto, abbreviated, VDMA, first appeared in the court of Fred- erick the Wise (Luthers protector prince) in 1522. Frederick had it sown on the sleeve of court officials. It was used also by his successors and became the official motto of the Smal- caldic League (a military alliance of Lutheran princes). It became a symbol of the Lutheran laity as they struggled to defend their beliefs, communities and families against those who intended to destroy them. It was used on flags, banners, uniforms, swords and helmets. It was found on church walls, over doorways and on foundation stones. Thankfully, we dont face the threat of armed conflict be- cause we proclaim the Gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. But our archene- mies of devil, world and our own sinful flesh are a con- stant threat. They are a very real and present danger, constantly striving to snatch away our faith. If only we recognized the danger and took the threat of these ene- mies as serious as we do threats to our physical health. Seatbelts and helmets, locked doors and security sys- tems, warnings of stranger dangerand active shooter drills have become accepted parts of life in our day. If only we were so conscientious about guarding our eternal welfare and that of our children. If only we took seriously the prophetic and apostolic words: The Word of the Lord remains forever. The unchanging Word of God is the power of salvation (Rom. 1:16) and it alone can extinguish the flaming ar- rows of the devil (Eph. 5:16-17). The Word of the Lord is our sure defense and our eternal security measure. We tune our ears to the sound of tornado sirens, fire alarms, and train whistles. Its time we also tune our ears to the warning of Jesus: Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell(Matt. 10:28). Where is the Word of the Lord in your life? How does it shape your life and protect you, daily? Is it regularly on your heart (Deut. 6:6)? Are you talking about it to your children when you sit, walk, lie down and rise (Deut. 6:7)? Is it evident in your life as a guide to your hand and your eye (Deut. 6:8)? Is it present in your home like a writing on your door and your gate (Deut. 6:9)? Make note of the many opportunities listed in this newslet- ter to be in Gods Word with your fellow brothers and sis- ters in Christ. Read the Word of God in your home. Talk about it with your family. Meditate on it in daily devotions. The Word of the Lord remains forever and it is a fortress against devil, world and sinful flesh. It is by the Word of the Lord that you are kept safe in the nail-scarred hands of your Savior, where not even the devil himself can snatch you away (John 10:28-29). VDMA, Pastor Licht

Check-Up With The Parish

Nurse

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Most outbreaks linked to the water we swim, relax, and play in are due to diarrhea. These germs include Cryptosporidium (“Crypto”), norovirus, and E.coli. Even when it’s treated properly with chemicals, water can still have germs. Pool chemicals, like chlorine and bromine, can kill most germs with-in a few minutes. However, Crypto can live in a properly treat-ed pool water for several days.

Legionella, a germ that causes Legionnaire’s disease (a type of pneumonia), can also be found in not properly disinfected hot tubs and spas. It has also been found in decorative pools and fountains. A person can get infected with Legionella when they breathe in steam or mist from a contaminated hot tub. It is not spread from one person to another.

Things to remember to prevent illness:

* Don’t swim or let children swim if sick with diarrhea.

* Don’t let children under the age of 5 use hot tubs.

* Don’t swallow the water.

* Take children on bathroom breaks hourly.

* Change diapers in diaper-changing area and away from the water.

* Shower for at least a minute before getting in the water to wash off dirt, sweat, and bodily fluids.

* If pregnant, consult a physician before hot tub use, particu-larly in the first trimester.

Know the pool and hot tubs are safe by being aware of the following:

* You can see the bottom of pool even at the deep-end.

* Hot tub pumps and filtration systems make noise so you should hear them running.

* There is little or no chemical odor. A strong chemical odor indicates a maintenance problem.

* Check for posted or ask to see water inspection results.

* Use test strips to check pool and hot tub chemical levels. Most superstores, hardware stores, and pool supply stores sell pool and hot tub strips. Free chlorine should be at 2-4 parts per million, bromine at 4-6 ppm, and the pH at 7.2-7.8 levels.

August 2018 August 5 "And the Pursuit of Happiness" Guest Speaker: Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer When the main goal in life is your happiness, you've turned in on yourself and away from oth-ers, especially God. Turn from yourself to Jesus and you'll know a peace that surpasses all un-derstanding, and that is the basis for true lasting happiness.(Exodus 16:2-15; John 6:22-35)

August 12 "Pigeonholed" Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus Just when you think you are getting to know Je-sus, He says something which can confuse. To-day the world remains confused about God's Son, our Savior. That's because Jesus refuses to be pigeonholed by the world's desires or ex-pectations. He's God's Son, Who has come to save humankind. Anything else, or different than this, is simply unacceptable. (John 6:42)

August 19 "In Your Light We See Light" Guest Speaker: Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer Meditation is time to think, and Christian mediaion thinks about God in the light of Jesus Christ. It is "a lamp to our feet and a light to our path." (Psalm 36 )

August 26 "What Is Best" Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus Far too many people assume there are differences in commercial products, political candidates and school systems, but these same people believe all religions are the same. Today we join with the Apostle Paul in praying people may discern what is best when it comes to their Savior. (Philippians 1:9-10)

God’s People Respond

We, as God’s people, see many ways we can help and serve others. At times, we see

the opportunities but ignore them thinking someone else will do it. What if you are the

“someone else” who God wants to extend a helping hand? How do you reply? Many in

Iowa District West have said, “Yes, Lord, I can help!”

Help was recently needed because of the torrential rains and storms in Iowa. On June

25, I received a call about the 80

mph wind in Greenfield which had destroyed many trees. After

assessing the need for a LERT trailer and volunteers, I sent out

the call. Ron Eichhorst, Clarinda, hooked up the LERT trailer and

headed to Greenfield. Nineteen volunteers grabbed their gloves,

bottles of water, chainsaws, rakes and went to work. Volunteers

came from Clarinda, Corning, Creston, Osceola and Greenfield to

lend a helping hand. It was a two day project. Pastor Keith

Schweitzer, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield, expressed

his and the community’s gratitude for the help they received.

Then the rains hit Iowa. Des Moines was hit hard on June 30. Pastor Bill and Angela Weiss, Trinity Lutheran Church in

Des Moines (Formerly of Immanuel Lutheran in Lidderdale, IA), had an experience they will not forget. Pastor Weiss

shares, “There was something like ten inches of rain in an hour or two. Because of this, the city sewer system could

not handle the normal water flow and sewage backwater literally came

gushing out of our basement toilet. We eventually had 2 ½ feet of sewage

backwater in the basement. All of the appliances were lost (washer, dryer,

freezer and refrigerator) as well as the furnace and water heater. In addi-

tion, anything that was not at least three feet off the floor is a total loss. “As

it stands, we have no A/C outside of a small window air conditioner we just

purchased which is doing its best to cool the whole upstairs. In addition, we

do not have hot water as the water heater is defunct. My daughter’s bed-

room is in the basement so she lost many personal items. As you can

imagine, HVAC and plumbers are in high demand, so it will be 1 ½ to 2

weeks before water heater and furnace are installed.” Again, God’s people

responded to the call to help the Weiss family. I contacted many people and the response was good. People re-

moved items from the basement and ripped out all the sheetrock and insulation up to four feet.

God’s people are also responding to the needs of the homeless through items made and collected. Mary Reed,

Boone, made 5,000 Jesus bracelets in the past five months! Plans are to distribute 3,000 at the Iowa State Fair Luther-

an Hour Ministries booth. Frank Morgan, Farnhamville, has made 250 knit hats in

the past four months! Betty Nobiling, Westside, has made 160 knit hats in the

past several months. The LWML women did another amazing job of collecting

items for the homeless. As I shared at convention, “The women are the prod-

uct suppliers and I am the distribution center!” Pictured in the pile of

goodies for the homeless are over 400 bras, underwear for men, over

1,000 tubes of toothpaste, over 1,000 deodorants and 3,000 washcloths.

THANK YOU to all who serve others! Ellie Menz, IOWAY Director

Starting this fall…

A NEW CHOIR! Choir will be open to singers in Confirmation Class (grades 5-8), high school students, and adults. It will meet on Monday night at 6:30-7:30 pm in the balcony. We’ll begin August 27.

I’ve heard many say that they’re not very good singers, but the fact is that choirs are made up of some leaders and many followers. We’ll practice weekly, so if you attend regularly, it won’t be hard to learn the music and feel great about singing. We’ll do some simple things at first but hope to have 6-8 men so we can sing SATB music later in the year.

We’ll work 4-6 weeks ahead of when we sing, so feel free to join any time this fall. Please email Judy Panning if you have questions. [email protected]
