    Merry Christmas!

“She gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7)

The Fourth Sunday of Advent puts us at the threshold of the Nativity, that is, the birth of the Lord which is Christmas. I wish all of you, our parishioners and friends a very Merry Christmas in advance.

During this season we are always naturally tempted to anticipate the memorial of the historic Christmas that happened in Bethlehem- the birth of Jesus with the Holy Family surrounded by animals, shepherds, Magi and the host of Angels singing. This is very fitting. But this historical fact

should not blind us from the sacramental reality that the Baby Jesus, as the Emmanuel (God with us) really wants to be born in our souls and hearts today. He really wants to bring us to a closer relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit so that our human relationships will experience peace, joy and love that is similar to that of the Holy Family. The very idea of incarnation, that is, God taking human flesh in the womb of Mary and His birth indicates His ultimate purpose for humanity, which is to set man free from the entanglements of sin and over preoccupation with temporal values in exclusion of eternal happiness.

The Christmas season, not just a day, but beginning from Christmas Day to the Baptism of the Lord on January 12th presents us with the opportunity to rejoice but also to open our heart more and more to the cause of our joy, the Em-manuel- God with us. He comes at His choice, regardless of our limitations, to live with us so we can contemplate His love, share His peace and become agents of love, peace and reconciliation for others. In addition to welcoming Him to our hearts we are also called to welcome others who are shut out and those who do not belong, that is, those who, like the baby Jesus, are not given a place in the inn. The more that we’re open to that love, the more we share our joy and peace with them, the more we open our inner room for Jesus who through His incarnation and nativity has taken the face of every human person.

I am grateful that all of us at St. Patrick have become agents of His message in our own ways. Our charitable efforts and outreach to our immediate community and beyond attest to this among other endeavors. We end this year praying for more disciples of peace in our world, praying that all of us will take our right place and share that peace of Christ, the new born king, with everyone that we meet. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Fr. Godwin

After Christmas Day, I will take my annual vacation, traveling with the ImaBridge Mission Team Members, bringing the peace of Jesus to people in Africa. Thank you for supporting our efforts and keep us in your prayers. I have made arrangements for Masses and the liturgical and sacramental life of the parish to be covered and I will stay in touch with the office daily. I will see you at the end of January. May Jesus the Prince of Peace, through the intercession of His par-ents and ours, Mary and Joseph, bring His peace to you and to our world. Amen

Fr. Godwin and the parish staff wish all of you a very blessed and Merry Christmas.

The Parish office will be closed beginning at Noon on Monday December 23rd and will reopen on Thursday, Dec. 26th.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially regis-tered? (5) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult—18+) need to register independent from your par-ents.

Please do not take your church registration for grant-ed. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an offi-cial record of your membership in the Parish. Parish reg-istration is essential for many reasons. It becomes im-portant when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wish-ing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addi-tion, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the parish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration at the top of the home page.

    What is Christmas

For many the day is celebrated just once a year. The purpose for many of us is to spread Christmas cheer. Is that what Christmas is all about? A time to scream and shout? Is it about buying presents and bustling here and there? Or maybe to contemplate what to wear? NO CHRISTMAS is not about buying a lot But is the real reason something we just forgot. And we need to understand Jesus has a lot to say. And also He is perfect in body and mind. And a model for us to show us how to be kind. But more importantly He came to wipe out the power of sin Isn’t it time for all of us to truly believe Him? Or is it another year we are lead to believe That presents are the only things we yearn to receive. For if there was no Christ in Christmas, there would be no reason to celebrate at all. So let us realize it is not all about fun and parties and such. But for the world He is here to love us so much. So let us believe in Him and not grow apart, But to always know that He is with us always to be in our hearts. So have a Blessed Christmas and prepare in every way Because He is our Lord and Savior and our hope is to see Him in His glory some day.

The Music Ministry invites you to join them every Tuesday evening at 6:30PM in the Church to pray the rosary for all the sick of our parish fami-ly. They will be praying for those whose names are listed in the bulletin as well as any special prayer intention which you wish to include.

Saint John of Kanty Saint of the Day for December 23

    (June 24, 1390 – December 24, 1473)

John was a country lad who made good in the big city and the big university of Krakow, Poland. After brilliant studies he was ordained a priest and became a professor of theology. The inevitable opposition which saints encounter led to his being ousted by rivals and sent to be a parish priest at Olkusz. An extremely humble man, he did his best, but his best was not to the liking of his parish-ioners. Besides, he was afraid of the responsibilities of his position. But in the end he won his peo-

ple’s hearts. After some time he returned to Kraków and taught Scripture for the remainder of his life.

John was a serious man, and humble, but known to all the poor of Kraków for his kindness. His goods and his money were always at their disposal, and time and again they took advantage of him. He kept only the money and clothes absolutely needed to support himself. He slept little, ate sparingly, and took no meat. He made a pilgrimage to Jerusa-lem, hoping to be martyred by the Turks. Later John made four subsequent pilgrimages to Rome, carrying his luggage on his back. When he was warned to look after his health, he was quick to point out that, for all their austerity, the fathers of the desert lived remarkably long lives.

John of Kanty is a typical saint: He was kind, humble, and generous, he suffered opposition and led an austere, penitential life. Most Christians in an affluent society can understand all the ingredients except the last: Anything more than mild self-discipline seems reserved for athletes and ballet dancers. Christmas at least is a good time to reject self-indulgence.

Individuals that reach out to St. Vincent de Paul come from all walks of life, but misfor-tune and difficult life situations have result-ed in financial and/or food crises. So many

of our Friends in Need fiercely want to be independent and asking for help is very hard.

Recently a partially disabled woman asked if SVdP could help her with her food and a new snow shovel. Due to her medical condition, she was only able to work part-time and found herself dangerously low on food. The snow shovel? She shared with Vincentians her strong desire to be able to clean her sidewalk after winter snowstorms. Matthew 7:12 “So always treat others as you would like them to treat you, that is the Law and the Proph-ets.”
