We wish all mothers, grandmothers, and Godmothers, living and deceased, a Blessed and Happy Mother’s Day!

HOLY HOUR/BENEDICTION: The next scheduled Holy Hour and Benediction will take place Wednesday, May 15th, at St. Alphonsus from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM. BAPTISM CLASS: The next baptism class for our parish grouping will be Tuesday, May 21st, 6:30 PM at St. Alphonsus, in the church basement. To attend, you must register ahead of time by contacting Ms. Carmela Galloway at 724.695.7325 or [email protected]. This class is for those who belong to any of our six parishes and are baptizing their first child. 2019 MASS INTENTIONS: If you haven’t in the past had Masses offered for loved ones, please consider this wonderful tradition. The tradition of offering Masses for loved ones, living and/or deceased, is an important part of our spirituality as Catholics. It is a Catholic tradition to pray for the dead, a tradition many other Christians do not share with us but our intentions can be not only for our loved ones who are departed but also for those living who are in need of prayers. The greatest prayer the Church can offer is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. There are few things more miraculous than to pray for a Loved One during the very sacrifice of the Mass, at the very moment Jesus offered up Himself to His Father. To have a Mass offered on an occasion of a birthday, anniversary or a special need is appropriate, beneficial and appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. May God Bless you and your loved ones. Masses are still available. Requests will be accepted on a first-come/first-served basis. Forms can be found on the table in the back of the church. The suggested donation is $10.00 per Mass; please clearly mark your check “Mass Intention.” THE WAMA FOOD PANTRY: is happy to announce that they have relocated to their new place at 105 West Allegheny Road (warehouse behind Rite Aid). Their May Distributions dates are: Tuesday, May 14th 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon; Wednesday, May 15th 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM; Tuesday, May 28th 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon and Wednesday, May 29th 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. They would appreciate any help our churches can give as they get back to their normal schedule for the 2019 year. Since the area churches do not always have people who can volunteer during a particular month, they are hoping that anyone from any of the churches will volunteer any month they can. Please call the Food Pantry number 724.695.1305 to let our coordinators: Tim Opfermann and Linda Stoner know if you can help. They need as many volunteers to help as they can get. Also at the present time, there is no plan to reopen the Thrift Store. MOTHERHOOD Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever. —Anonymous

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The reception of Holy Communion at Sunday Mass is such an expected feature of the Mass these days that it is surprising to realize that for many centuries, receiving Communion was a relatively rare event in the life of a faithful Christian. “Easter duty” means that Catholics must celebrate reconciliation if aware of serious sin, and receive Holy Communion during the Easter season. For a while, this was a requirement of Easter week, and later extended to the whole season of fifty days, and even beyond that by a few weeks. For the majority of people long ago, this meant Communion was a once-a-year moment. A rather complex bureaucracy grew up around this rule in the Middle Ages. Amazingly, people received a kind of token at confession admitting them to Communion in their home parish, which then kept careful records and reported them to the bishop. Surviving records can tell us a great deal about our ancestors. In fact, people were encouraged to journey to the church of their baptism in order to fulfill their duty, and therefore the Easter duty includes in its origins a grateful pilgrimage to the font in which you were first embraced by Christ. If your “Holy Mother Church” is within a drive, why not make a pilgrimage to that font a feature of your Easter celebration of these fifty days? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
