Today’s SermonDr. Heidegger’s ExperimentPreacher: The Rev. Richard Grimball

In the 1800’s, Nathaniel Hawthorne was known for his morbid curiosity of human behavior. His short story Dr. Heiddger’s Experiment is no exception, as a science experiment is eagerly tested on four of Dr. Heidegger’s closest friends from year’s past. Dr. Heidegger’s question: If humans had the opportunity to go back in time and reclaim their youth, would they use the knowledge and wisdom from the present for personal and societal change? Dr. Heiddeger’s discovery: Wait and see! Jesus offers us an invitation as well, though his hypothesis is quite different. Jesus’ question: As I am ushering in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth with my baptism in the Jordan, will you accept my personal invitation to receive forgiveness for your sins--and a transformation of heart and life--that can only come from an eternal relationship with me? Jesus’ discovery: He never gives up, and loves us beyond all measure.

- 3 - Transforming Hearts Through Jesus Christ

Service adapted from the Anglican Church of North America Prayer Book beginning on page 105.

Processional Hymn, all standing The Church’s One Foundation Hymn 525

1. The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is his new creation by water and the word: From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; With his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

2. Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

3. Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed; Yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, “How long?” And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

4. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war She waits the consummation of peace for evermore; Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed, And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

5. Yet she on earth hath union with God, the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

(Standing)Officiant Alleluia! Christ is risen!People The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

The Collect for Purity

All Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the LawOfficiant Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

The liturgy begins with the Acclamation, which is an “eager expression” of praise.

In this Prayer for Purity, weask God to cleanse our hearts and minds of anything that comes between Him and us, anything that would impede our worship of Him. We offer to Him our whole selves that we might decrease and that He might increase, to the glory of Jesus Christ.

Song of Praise, standing Here I Am to Worship

Officiant The Lord be with you.People And with your spirit.Officiant Kneeling or sitting, let us pray.

The Collect of the DayOfficiant O God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd of your people: Grant that, when we hear his voice, we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson: Isaiah 40:1-11 (seated) After the Reading, the Reader says The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Song, standing Come Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain Hymn 200

1. Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness! God hath brought his Israel into joy from sadness; LoosedfromPharoah’sbitteryokeJacob’ssonsanddaughters, Led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters. 2. “Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison, And from three days’ sleep in death as a sun hath risen; Allthewinterofoursins, longanddark, isflying From his light, to whom we give laud and praise undying.

4. Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb’s dark portal, Nor the watchers, nor the seal hold thee as a mortal: But today amidst thine own thou didst stand, bestowing That thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing.

The Scriptures teach that much of our spiritual renewal is by the washing of the Word of God, which cleanses our minds and purifies our hearts.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], whowiththeFatherandtheSonisworshipedandglorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Officiant Kneeling or sitting, let us pray. The Prayers of the People, kneeling

Leader Father in this Easter Season, You have triumphed gloriously in the victory of Christ Jesus over sin and death. Freshly empower your church to proclaim that Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again. Lord, in Your mercy,

People Hear our prayer.

The word Gospel comes from an old German word which means “Good News,” the great good news about Jesus the Messiah. We stand for the Gospel reading to show the importance we place on Jesus’ words and actions.

The Nicene Creed is a statement of what the Christian community believes to be true about God. It was born of rigorous intellectual debate in the fourth century, culminating in councils of whole church at Nicaea in 325 and at Constantinople in 381. The word creed comes from the Latin credo for “I believe.”

Catholic simply means universal, not necessarily the Roman Catholic Church.

People Hear our prayer.

Leader On this season of Easter Resurrection, we pray for those who have died, remembering especially Ra’Shaud Graham...Silence...that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom.

Lord, in Your mercy,People Hear our prayer.

Leader Thank you Jesus for bringing us with you to see this new day. Our prayer is that what we have learned from this new rhythm of life will draw us closer to you, and to each other. If our daily life is out of rhythm, may you give us the strength and faith to ask you for balance. If we are spending more time with you than ever before, may we continue to schedule you on our daily calendar as a priority and not an afterthought. We love you Jesus, and we proclaim you as our Lord and Savior, who emerged from the waters of Baptism to usher in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Lord, in Your mercy,

People Hear our prayer.

A Word About our Prayers of the People and our 4 H’s You may have noticed we pray for Hearts and Homes, The Holy City, The Hurting Coast and the Hungering World. What do they mean?

Heart and Home - All hearts and

homes in St. Michael’s Church from

the cradle to the grave!

Holy City - Urban ministries in

Charleston.

Hurting Coast - From Richmond,

VA to Maine, where Christian faith is

in decline in this country.

Hungering World - To people-

groups who have little or no access

to the Gospel of Jesus in Burundi;

Durgapur, India; Samburu, Kenya;

and other regions of the 10/40

Window (the area extending from

l0 degrees to 40 degrees north of the

Equator, from North Africa east

to China.)

About The Prayers: If God knows everything what’s the point of prayer? Clearly prayer is not about “informing God” of anything. In short, prayer is a way of saying “yes, Lord, I want to develop a relationship with you, receive your life, share my life.”

About the “posture” of prayer: It has been commonly said that Anglicans kneel for prayer, but that is not the rule for posture in any edition of the Prayer Book. Various editions have assumed that standing is the normal posture for public prayer and have directed the people to kneel only for confessions, for reciting the Commandments, etc.. However, in this parish it is the traditional discipline to kneel for the prayers contained in the services of Morning and Evening Prayer. It is a posture of humility, which is something always worth cultivating in us.

Song Our God is an Awesome God

Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from heaven above With wisdom, power, and love Our God is an awesome God

The Confession, (seated or kneeling)

Officiant Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. (Silencetoreflectonthoseyouhavehurtorthosewhohavehurtyou.)

Officiantandpeople Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker and judge of us all: Weacknowledgeandlamentourmanysinsandoffenses, which wehavecommittedbythought, word, anddeedagainstyourdivine majesty, provoking most justly your righteous anger against us. We are deeply sorry for these our transgressions; the burden of them is more than we can bear. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may evermore serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The AbsolutionOfficiant Almighty God our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has

promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Officiant Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew11:28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John3:16

The Peace, All standOfficiant The peace of the Lord be always with you.People And also with you. Then the Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

In the Confession of Sin and Absolution, our sins, both individual and corporate, have been confessed, and we have been powerfully reassured of God’s complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ. In Morning Prayer we begin with a cleansing admission and confession of sin followed by an authoritative pronouncement of God’s forgiveness in Christ Jesus. This is always “ground zero” for Christians. We move out from here.

The Peace is a particularly good time to welcome visitors and newcomers. Please take a moment to extend God’s peace to those around you. That peace, which the world cannot give, comes only through the forgiving of Jesus Christ. This peace is not rooted in our circumstances but in the presence, promise, and power of God and Christ’s redeeming work.

Holy Communion(ACNA Prayer Book, beginning p. 132)

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts.People We lift them up to the Lord.Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Here a Proper Preface is normally sung or said Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:Sanctus Hymnal S 125 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.Prayer of Consecration, kneeling Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

The Holy Communion, the Supper of the Lord, is not only a sign of the love that Christians ought to have among themselves for each other but is especially a sacrament of our redemption by Christ’s death.

The Eucharistic Prayer is centered in the atoning death of Jesus Christ upon the cross. His suffering there in our place is the only sufficient ground or basis for our standing before God. Our joy in the present and our hope for the future all flow from the reality of God’s redeeming work in the historic event of the crucifixion.

The Sanctus is the song of the seraphim contained in the great vision that the prophet Isaiah experienced while worshiping in the Temple in Jerusalem. This vision is recorded in the 6th chapter of Isaiah. It is inspired by Isaiah’s vision of the heavenly court “Holy, holy, holy” acknowledging transcendence of God.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy Sacrament, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us and we in him. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us with all your saints into the joy of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer, sung together (Malotte)

The Great AMEN, based on Romans 11:36, is the apex of congregational response in the Eucharist. It is capitalized to emphasize that this is the point where we enthusiastically agree with the Eucharistic prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer, so called because Jesus gave this prayer to His disciples as an example of how to pray, has been a part of Eucharistic liturgies since year 400 A.D. The link between our daily bread and the spiritual food we receive in the Eucharist is very ancient. In the Lord’s Prayer, we ask for daily bread, meaning the things we need to get through each day. But as a part of that, the sacramental bread also symbolizes God’s presence, which is something that is also essential to our getting through the day.

During Communion: When we gather together, we remember the presence of Jesus. By repeating the words and actions of Jesus’ last meal with His disciples, we join the story and make it our own. We don’t just watch the drama or listen to it unfold, we enter into the story as we, too, take the bread and wine and eat and drink.

We stand to mark the fact that because we have received the body and blood of Jesus, we are changed people. We began on our knees and end standing through his body and blood.

We have been blessed by being here. Now, at the end of the service, we are reminded that God takes loving delight in blessing us abundantly. We leave in peace, forgiven, fed, and sent out with a purpose in the name of Jesus Christ.

As the celebration ends, we are charged to “go forth.” The Eucharist is therefore not an exclusive gathering that separates us from the world but a challenge to reach out beyond our own church to the world around us.

Breaking of the BreadCelebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Spiritual Communion PrayerAll: Dear Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to possess you within my soul. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, together with all your faithful people, and Iembraceyouwithalltheaffectionsofmysoul.Neverpermitme to be separated from you. Amen.

Post Communion Prayer

All: Eternal God, heavenly Father, You have graciously accepted us as living members of your son our Savior Jesus Christ. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Closing Hymn Jesus Shall Reign Hymn 544

1. Jesus shall reign wherever the sun Doth his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

2. To him shall endless prayer be made, And praises throng to crown his head; His Name like sweet perfume shall rise Withev’rymorningsacrifice.

5. Let every creature rise and bring Peculiar honors to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud Amen.
