Why Do Catholic Women Wear Veils at Mass? For over 2,000 years, Catholic women have worn some
kind of head covering in church. Though the particular reasons
for doing so have varied (for example, modesty in the time of
St. Paul), this practice has always focused on the transcend-
ence of the place—the church, the very dwelling of the Real
Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Having been given this
magnificent Gift by Jesus himself, every Catholic church holds
something not found anywhere else: the true, living presence
of our Bridegroom, hidden under the appearance of bread and
wine.
Contrary to what many believe, Vatican II never did away with this tradi-
tion. It remains a beautiful devotion whereby each woman, symbolizing the
Bride of Christ, the Church, wears a veil as a visible reminder of the perfect
submission of the Church to the loving rule of Christ.
“Woman, because she was created by being drawn from man’s side, is constantly
trying to return to him. She desires the original unity of one flesh and one bone. The
desire for unity between man and woman is a mirror of the relationship between
Christ and the soul. As woman longs for union with man in human relationships, she
is also drawn to unity with God. He calls her to become one with Him: to come under
His side and become flesh of His flesh and bone of His bone. This occurs during re-
ception of the Eucharist. The covering of the head with a veil symbolizes the reality of
women sheltered in the side of her Source and becoming one with Him. She becomes
covered and hidden in her Divine Spouse.” - St. John Chrysostom, Doctor of the
Church

40 Days for Life ~ September 25, 2020 ~
Would you be willing to pray for one hour?
40 Days for Life is a unique pro-life effort
that consists of 40 days of prayer, fasting and
peaceful vigil in front of abortion clinics. The
Grand Rapids campaign will be in front of
the Heritage Clinic at 320 E. Fulton, the only abortion
clinic still operating in our community. Dozens of area
churches have adopted a day of prayer. Our parish family
has chosen Sept 25 to fill in the time slots to pray to end abortion and close the Heritage abortion clinic in Grand
Rapids? Contact Lisa Potts 616-723-3213 or
[email protected] sign up or for more infor-
mation. We will need 2 prayer volunteers from 7 am till
7 pm throughout the day. This is a powerful and proven
effective way to close abortion centers and show the
Mother's that we are praying and thinking about them and
their babies. Please consider a hour of your time on Sept
25. Thank you for your commitment to LIFE! God
bless! www.40daysforlife.com/GrandRapids.
Wedding Anniversary Mass
Together with your families, the Diocese of
Grand Rapids honors the faithful witness to
your vocation of marriage and wishes to
celebrate with you. Bishop Walkowiak will
be celebrating the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 11
for the intentions of all couples in the diocese celebrating
milestone anniversaries this year. Because of the current
situation, we are asking couples to attend Mass at their
own parish that day or to participate from home by
watching the regular broadcast of the televised Mass on
FOX 17 or the livestream on the diocesan Facebook page.
If you would like your marriage to be included in the Mass
intention, please RSVP by calling your parish office.
LABOR DAY BLESSING
Bless, O God, all those who labor. Whether
they are compensated by paycheck or pride,
let them know their true worth in your eyes.
May all workers be gifted with a sense of service to the
common good and graced with the satisfaction of a job
well done. Thank you for those whose work provides
protection, comfort, healing, and relief from suffering and
stress. May all of our labors be for your goodness and
glory. Amen
COVID-19 Parish Office Hours & Sanctuary Hours
St Mary's Parish Office & St Michaels Parish Office have RE-OPENED for
visitors. We will have new guidelines in effect. Due to space and social distancing
guidelines only TWO people will be permitted in the office at a time. You must
answer a series of questions before entering. You will have your temperature taken
before entering. You must wear a mask while in the building. (these restrictions may
change at any time due to instructions from the diocese and the state of Michigan) If
you have any questions or concerns, please contact Fr Ayub 1.616.901.0974 or
We have returned to our Normal Mass Schedule
It will be imperative for all of us — pastors, parish staff, volunteers, and all the faithful
— to work together during these times. The pandemic is not over, and safety
precautions must be followed, in order to promote the continued health and safety of
everyone in our community. Just a reminder, all Catholics in the diocese are
dispensed of their Sunday obligation through October 18. Your cooperation is vital as we take these steps:
• Limit the number of people inside at a given time to no more than 25% of the
church's seating capacity.
• The community room and chapel will be used for overflow.
• We will not be using Hymnals.
• Social distancing MUST occur. Only people living in the same household may sit
together. All others should remain 6 feet away in every direction from another
individual who is not a member of their household. Please show patience with
parents with young children.
• There should be no physical contact between parishioners (e.g. parishioners
should not hold hands during the Our Father, (the invitation for the Sign of Peace
will be omitted).
• Masks or appropriate equivalent facial coverings MUST be worn by all participants
2 years and older (by those not performing a liturgical ministry).
• Place your offertory in the baskets placed in the entry areas. There will be no pass-
ing of the collection basket.
• Only the priest will distribute Holy Communion so there will be some slight
changes to receive communion. For the distribution of Holy Communion, the
faithful keep their face covering in place while approaching in procession. At an
identified position marked 6 feet from the minister, they should respond "Amen"
and remove their face covering before coming forward for Holy Communion.
Their face covering should be placed back on their face before proceeding to their
seat. Holy Communion must be received by hand. Gloves may not be worn.
• All are encouraged to attend weekday Mass to help with the social distancing re-
quirement.
• We urge anyone who is considered vulnerable due to age or underlying health
conditions to remain at home. If you are sick, or have been exposed to anyone
who is sick, please stay home.
As this is a situation we Catholics have never experienced before, please be patient as
we work through this extraordinary event together. Thank You

Happy Retirement John
After 32 Years of employment at St Mary’s, our Music Director/Organist and friend,
John Vesbit has decided to retire. His last weekend playing here will be Sept 12/13.
We appreciate the many years of service and musical talents he has shared with our
parish family. He will be greatly missed. Due to COVID, we will not be able to have a
formal going away celebration, however the staff will be getting together for a small
luncheon and catering in his favorite foods. We do have a card available in the Narthex
for everyone to sign and offer their best wishes. Please be sure to sign it today.
Some fun facts about John:
• Started at St Mary’s in 1988
• Has worked for 5 different Pastors
• Coordinated the purchase of a new organ with computer
