“Then he looked for the crop of grapes, but what it yielded was wild grapes.” - Is. 5:2b (first reading)

After a very busy week-end, I awoke this past Monday more tired than usual. It took me a while to get going until I picked up my phone to put it into my pocket and the screen came on filled with news notices about the mas-sacre in Las Vegas. I became wide-awake and was moved to prayer yet again in the face of such tragedy.

All day long I kept coming back to the final line of the most famous of all prayers, the Our Father: “But deliver us from evil.”

There is so much evil in our world. Both Fr. Cody and I preached about the battle, the tug-of-war that we are in with Satan and evil and how essential it is for us to face this harsh human reality with prayer, virtue, sacraments and perseverance in our faith. This is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:

“(The last petition of the Our Father) touches each

of us personally, but it is always ‘we’ who pray, in communion with the whole Church, for the deliverance of the whole human family...Our inter-dependence in the drama of sin and death is turned into solidarity in the Body of Christ, the ‘communion of saints.’

“In this petition, evil is not an abstraction, but refers to a person, Satan, the Evil One, the angel who opposes God. The devil (dia-bolos) is the one who ‘throws himself across’ God’s plan and his work of salvation accomplished in Christ.

“A murderer from the beginning...a liar and the father of lies, Satan is ‘the deceiver of the whole world.’ Through him sin and death entered the world and by his definitive defeat all creation will be ‘freed from the corruption of sin and death.’"

When we ask to be deliv-ered from the Evil One, we pray as well to be freed from all evils, present, past and future, of which he is the author or insti-gator. In this final petition, the Church brings before the Father all the distress of the world. Along with deliverance from the evils that overwhelm humanity,

she implores the precious gift of peace and the grace of perseverance in expectation of Christ’s return.” (CCC 2850-54)

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanks-giving, make your request known to God. Then the peace of God that sur-passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6 (second reading)

More than ever, we need to be people of faith, inten-tional disciples of Jesus Christ not only for our sal-vation but for the nation

and the world. We need to be “prayer warriors” on behalf of our nation that is floundering and drown-ing in the deceitful storms of secularism, relativism, individualism, consum-erism and indifference toward God and the dig-nity of the human person. We are becoming a nation of “wild grapes.” We are in a battle and we need to use the peaceful weapons of prayer, fasting, and the Sacraments.

I especially urge each of us to commit to an hour of adoration, not just once but on an ongoing basis, especially in the night hours, to pray for

our families, our parish, our Catholic Church and the bishops, our political leaders and those who are so influential in our nation. We need to lift them up in prayer, to safeguard them against “the evil one who prowls about the world seeking the ruin of souls.” Our souls and the soul of our nation are at stake.

In the midst of such trag-edy, I offer a word of deep gratitude for the generous response to the extra-ordinary call to stewardship for the victims of the hurricanes. We sent $20,364.54 to the Knights of Columbus. Thank you so very much for your generosity. The Knights already have received over $2,500,000 for direct relief aid. Their presence in the local communities will assure that help gets to their neighbors in need.

Lastly, I remind you and invite you all to the Saint Michael School Family Night Auction this coming Saturday, October 14. It is a wonderful evening of fun and community for the entire parish as well as for your neighbors and friends. There are many activities for children in a safe environment, good food and drink as well as awesome auction items. Come join the fun.

In Christ, I love you,

ROSARY & HEALING MASSIn honor of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions in Fatima, Portugal. Tim Ilgen Concelebrants: Fr. Jim Lee, Fr. Paul Brunet

Our next Life Night presents the Fall of Humanity as the root of all sin and challenges teenagers to understand the narra-tive of the fall as a common occurrence in their lives every time they sin. The world is fallen because of original sin. We feel the effects of original sin when we experience conflict, sin, suffering, and evil. But fear not, God did not abandon us to sin and death! God’s plan to save us was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Even though Jesus has won the ultimate victory over sin and death, we still face a battle where we must choose to follow Christ or disobey God through our sins. All teens are welcome to share in this victory, and get a taste of the battle field (we've got a cool icebreaker planned). See you there!

We are scheduling a series of health presentations offered by parishioners to parishioners and to families whose kids attend St Michael School. Presentations will be offered once a month and will focus on health issues that touch most of our lives (eye care, dental hygiene, exercise, heart disease, diet & nutrition, mental health, addiction, massage therapy, balance & falls, injury prevention and more). Lives are changed–and sometimes saved–because of the screenings that outreach programs like this provide. It can take as little as two hours a year of your time! If you are interested in taking on this task on behalf of the parish, please contact Chris Peterson, Parish Administrator at (360) 292-7116 for a copy of the Scope of Work or for additional information.

Have you ever heard the old saying, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care?" It's that human connection that changes hearts and lives. And, one of the most powerful ways we connect with others is through story. They can be great inspiration to take action ourselves.Do you have a story of how sharing your faith impacted someone's life? We'd love to hear about it and consider it for publication. Your testimony – your story – might be the spark that inspires someone to share their faith in a meaningful way for the first time.Send us your story! Email it to [email protected] (500 words maximum)

We'll have a potluck dinner in the Gathering Space on Saturday, October 21 after the 5pm Mass. LOGO WEAR HITS THE STREETS!A big thank you to all the volunteers in ministries reaching out to those in need in the wider community. Last Saturday about 80 parish-ioners who serve in those ministries gathered to receive updates, become better acquainted, and receive our new logo wear items. One of the initiatives in our current Strategic Plan is “Evangelization and Outreach”. In working on this initiative, we distributed hats, aprons, and bags with the SMP logo, as well as chains with crucifixes and medals of St. Michael. The goal of this initiative is to be a constant and visible sign of Christ’s presence in our community, readily identifi-able as Saint Michael Parish. Why? Outwardly wearing our faith is an expression of

and an opportunity for grace, helping:To help others encounter God in everyday life, no matter where they are on their path.

To encourage others to ask questions about our church. To give others courage to show their faith.

To let others know of the good the Church does for the world, particularly what our parish does and can do for many more within our community. To instill in us a deeper under-standing of Christ through sharing our faith with others. If you minister in the wider community and were not able to attend the meeting, please contact Bene Reece at (360) 292-7143 or [email protected] to receive updates and your logo wear!
