Mission Statement To live out the message of Jesus Christ and become, in fact
and appearance, a true Christian community.
Faith Formation Faith formation is a lifelong process: an ongoing interaction
with God’s creative goodness. We allow the Gospel to
transform us and then bring transformation to the world. The
Faith Formation Program at St. Matthias Parish provides
opportunities to grow as individuals and as a community. We
offer classroom sessions for children, a comprehensive
Confirmation program, intergenerational learning in a variety
of formats, and an adult enrichment program. For more
information, contact Theresa Salafia ([email protected]).
Community Prayer Line Our prayer line, coordinated by Marie Mangan (978 562-
2891) offers prayers for you, your loved ones and friends.
Requests may also be placed in the "Prayer Request" box at
the rear of the Church. All requests will be kept confidential.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Those who are not baptized or have been baptized into another
Christian community and are interested in learning more about
initiation into the Catholic faith are invited to speak with Fr.
Fran.
Infant Baptism Our parish celebrates the sacrament of Baptism for infants and
children under the age of 7 at regularly scheduled Sunday
Masses. Please call Deacon Doug at any time during
pregnancy or at least two months in advance for information
on baptismal catechesis and the choosing of godparents.
Adult Confirmation Adults desiring to complete their Christian Initiation with the
sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to contact Fr. Fran
Reconciliation This sacrament of God’s infinite forgiveness, also known as
Penance and Confession, is celebrated on Saturdays at
3:15PM or by appointment with Fr. Fran. Communal
celebrations of the sacrament occur in Advent and Lent.
Anointing of the Sick The Church encourages all who are ill, about to undergo
surgery, or confined to their homes due to illness to be prayed
over and anointed with sacred oil. This can take place at a
parish Mass, in the home or in the hospital. Please speak with
Fr. Fran for more details.
Marriage Congratulations to engaged couples! Please contact Fr. Fran
eight months to a year before your wedding to plan a program
of marriage preparation.
Welcome New Parishioners! We invite you to share in our life as a Eucharistic Community.
Please introduce yourself to the staff and complete a welcome
card or register at the parish office.

PARISH FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP
FROM FATHER FRAN: As we pause to celebrate the founding of our nation
this weekend, it’s good to acknowledge that the freedoms
we enjoy, while vital to the health of our union, pale in
comparison to the freedom we find in Christ. As
Christians, it is from within the context of our faith and
Christ’s call to love and service to one another that we
exercise our civic freedom. As Catholic Christians, we
have much to add to the conversation. Pope Francis has
given us a great model for dialogue within a civic context
with his recent encyclical on the environment. He
encourages us to remember that care for the earth and for
each other goes beyond and comes before any corporate or
political interests. His words echo a century of Catholic
social teaching found in the encyclicals of his predecessors
and Vatican II.
It’s well worth our time to read Pope Francis’ words
in his encyclical, Laudato Si, which can be translated as
“Praise be to You”, and is subtitled “On the Care of Our
Common Home”. At present there are many internet sites
where the text can be found, just google Laudato Si to find
the information. Also, when you are reading the
encyclical, it would be good to check out the documents
that the pope references in his footnotes. These documents
form the basis of our Catholic social teachings. This may
not be light summer reading, but I think it is required
reading for every Catholic who wants to engage in civic
discourse through a Catholic lense.
Our fiscal year has just ended. As you know, our
parish is facing great financial challenges for the year
ahead. I’d like to personally thank all parishioners who
have so generously donated to our parish over the last year.
I once again encourage you to participate in our Increased
Offertory campaign. You will find brochures at the
entrances to the church with all the details.
Some folks have been asking about our parish Annual
Golf Tournament which we have held in September for a
number of years. Our primary organizers, who have
participated in the tournament since its very beginning,
twelve years ago, have retired from the fundraiser this year.
I can’t thank them enough for all they have done through
the Golf Tournament to support our parish. Each year they
have gone way above and beyond in bringing people
together from many and diverse places and backgrounds to
help our parish. Thanks for a job well done, Chris O’Brien,
Paul Brown and Dave Chatalian.
While we certainly want to continue the tradition of a
Golf Tournament, we haven’t found a new team to take
over the ranks as of yet. While a few folks have expressed
interest and commitment for next year (2016), unless some
folks come forward within the next few weeks, we will not
have a 2015 tournament. If you are interested and willing
to make a commitment for this year, please let me know as
soon as possible.
With the loss of revenue from the Golf Tournament
and a downturn in Offertory donations, we are beginning
the 2016 fiscal year with a deficit budget. The Parish
Finance Council, Pastoral Staff and I have been making
adjustments to our already bare bones budget and will
continue to adjust as the need arises.
As I have already announced, one of the immediate
changes due to budget constrictions is the restructuring of
parish Office Hours. One hour has been taken off of the
work day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Wednesday office hours will be in the morning only.
Effective July 1st our office schedule is: Mon, Tues,
Thurs, 9 AM – 3 PM, Wed, 9 AM – 12 NOON. The
office will continue to be closed on Fridays.
I hope this won’t be too inconvenient and know that
you can reach me, Deacon Doug, Deacon Paul, and
Theresa Salafia at any time via e mail or phone. Our
schedules will continue to vary from the office hours. Let
me thank our wonderful staff members who have been
asked to make personal sacrifices in this new arrangement.
Your dedication and love for our parish is greatly
appreciated.

The BEATITUDES for families
Blessed are the families who live simply, for they will taste the joys of living in God’s kingdom.
Blessed are the families who make time and space for each family member to mourn life’s sorrows and losses, for they will receive God’s comfort and consolation.
Blessed are the families who humbly receive life’s gifts rather than grasp at power and possessions, for they will discover they have been given everything they need.
Blessed are the families who nurture a hunger and thirst for fairness so that others will know the justice of God’s ways.
Blessed are the families in which mercy is abundant and forgiveness is given freely so that God’s mercy will be readily available to all.
Blessed are families who ground their lives in God and rise above the lures of temptation, for God will shine his face upon them.
Blessed are the families who create peace at home, at school, at work, in the community, and in the world, for they will be God’s very own.
Blessed are the families who strengthen one another, encourage compassion, and desire to do good despite life’s blows and setbacks, for they help bring about the Kingdom of God.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
The Bereavement Support Group meets in the downstairs
conference room every other Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m.
If you or someone you know is grieving the death of a loved
one, please know you are always welcome.
We create a safe place where one can find their sense of
loss validated and come to recognize their experience as
normal. Navigating the path through grief which can be
overwhelming becomes less complex when we have
someone to accompany us on the journey. Here you find
acceptance, understanding and companions who can witness
to the power of hope and healing. For more information
please call Deacon Doug at 508-460-9255.
OUR FATHER ’S TABLE
On Tuesday, July 14, members of St.
Matthias Parish will host “Our Father’s
Table”. This community outreach ministry is vital to the
lives of many of our neighbors who look to us for friendship
and a hot meal. If you are interested in baking or serving
dinner, please contact Jean Peltak 508-485-0605.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE
Though it is difficult to think about school when summer
has barely begun, the United Way of Tri-County is busy at
work collecting and organizing school supplies for children
in need in the greater Marlborough area. St. Matthias Parish
will be collecting school supplies for the “Tools for Schools”
backpack program that will be distributed to the many local
families unable to provide school supplies for their children.
The collection dates are July 25, 26 and August 1, 2. A wish
list of supplies may be found on this week’s bulletin insert.
If each family were to purchase just a few items it would
make an enormous difference in the life of a child. If you
would like to join with others in the parish to fill a grade
appropriate backpack together that would be greatly
appreciated. Some items requested are backpacks, pens,
pencils, colored pencils, crayons, glue sticks and notebooks.
Store gift cards are also welcome to fill in the gaps of
supplies where needed.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
The need for shawls never stops. Always,
there are people dealing with loss, loneliness,
anxiety and pain, experiencing new
beginnings or in need of an expression of
encouragement and love. Prayer Shawls are
tangible symbols of love when words seem
inadequate.
You can be part of our Prayer Shawl Ministry by getting
involved in making shawls, or by making a yarn or
monetary donation. We gratefully accept donations of new
yarn ( it takes an average of 3-6 skeins of 4 ply yarn to make
one shawl). Lion Brand, Red Heart are good choices.
Donations are the cornerstone of our work, whether through
yarn, monetary, or time, each aspect is honored and greatly
appreciated.
The shawl group meets in the Downstairs Conference
Room every Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. We’re a
small group that enjoys talking, laughing, listening,
supporting and, of course, knitting and crocheting. You do
not have to know how to knit or crochet –someone will
teach you. Please join us.
For further information contact Joanne Litster 508-485-
3723 or Cathy LaJeunesse 508-485-3578.

SHOP FOR A CAUSE—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
St. Matthias Parish is once again partnering with Macy’s
for their annual “Shop for a Cause” charity event on August
29, 2015. Macy’s has provided St. Matthias Parish with
shopping passes to sell for $5 each. St. Matthias Parish
will keep 100 percent of every shopping pass it sells!
By purchasing a shopping pass from St. Matthias Parish,
customers support our many ministries while enjoying a day
of spectacular discounts, entertainment and special events at
Macy’s, including a chance to win a $500 shopping pass.
Pass holders will receive special discounts up to 25% on
most regular, sale and clearance purchases all day (note:
some exclusions apply). This year some items qualify for a
30% discount!
Nina Forster has graciously offered to sell the passes
following 4:00 p.m. masses beginning next Saturday, July
11. We are still in need of a volunteer to sell passes on
Sundays. Passes are also available in the office during
normal business hours. If you are interested in helping out
on Sundays, please contact Diane Balinski at
[email protected] or 508-460-9255.
