First Reading: Revelations 7:2-4, 9-14 John recounts for us the details of his vision. An angel bearing the seal of the living God demands that the land and sea not be destroyed; huge crowds stand before the throne of the Lamb crying out that salvation comes from God; angels gathered round and praised God; an elder questions John and explains that those dressed in white are the ones who have survived the great period of trial. Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3 Once again John speaks to us of love. He points out to us the great love that the Father has for us by allowing us to be called children of God. John explains that the world doesn't recognize us because it never recognized Jesus. Our future will be revealed to us and in that light we shall see him as he is. Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12a When Jesus saw the crowds of people he went up to the mountainside gathered his disciples around him and began to teach them. This lesson in love has me to be known to us as the great "Sermon on the Mount" or "The Beatitudes.”
NOVEMBER 1, 2015 - FEAST OF ALL SAINTS
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS
HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
All Saints - November 1, 2015
“Beloved, see what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall become has not been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall become like him, for we shall see him as he is….for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven.”
The day we can call our own. It is ours for we are on the way to heaven, our destiny. It is ours for we can choose the person who models for us the path to holiness. It is ours, for God has called us to a life of holiness.
Our church in this modern era asks us to learn the way of modern saints, as Saint John 23
rd or Saint John Paul II.
We learn from the holiness of martyrs like Blessed Oscar Romero or the mercy of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
What made them who they are? They tried to live what Jesus taught. They were people of the Beatitudes. His teaching on the poor, in spirit, those striving for justice, seeking holiness, are the marks we use to see if we are on the path to sainthood.
This is our moment. We have only one life and it calls us to holiness, to be saints. This is our moment to respond and redirect our lives. There is Nothing wrong in being a saint.
