Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2019

Amos is a quick-tempered prophet whose “day job” was as a

herder and dresser of sycamore trees. Summoned by God, he is sent to

the northern kingdom of Israel to prophesy against their social and reli-

gious abuses. In bold terms, Amos describes the wanton disregard of

God’s people for God’s people and God’s laws and in full voice warns

them that God will never forget their misdeeds.

Long before the Gospels were written, Paul wrote his letters to the early

Christian communities to affirm their faith, strengthen their community,

and build their sense of identity. That’s what we hear in today’s Letter

to the bishop Timothy that they pray not only as a benefit for their com-

munity but for those outside their community. Let’s name it devotion

and dignity of God’s people, for God’s people.

After three “lost” parables, the Gospel author, Luke offers today’s par-

able that describes an unworthy steward about to be fired, who then

becomes an object of praise and a representative of right behavior. Be-

cause of numerous interpretations and historical and sociological distinc-

tions, we automatically hear the parable in today’s terms and consider

that the unworthy steward is “dishonest” in his actions; but a more accu-

rate understanding, based on further biblical study and understanding, is

that the unworthy steward’s character is “unjust” or “unrighteous.” The parable is about character and not ac-

tions and Luke’s Jesus wants our character to be good and holy, right and just. And if our character is upheld,

then our actions will be good and holy, right and just.

Perhaps a new perspective for our learning and living today! Do this and you will live!

WHAT a WONDERFUL beginning to our NEW Little Rock BIBLE STUDY

PROGRAM this past week. About 35 participants joined Deacon Tom on

Monday evening and about 24 participants joined Linda Richter on Wednes-

day morning to begin a 7-week series on the Bible – the who, what, when,

where, how and why of the Bible and through the DVD Program Introduc-

tion, many of our preconceived notions ABOUT the Bible were addressed to

help us EASE our way into a Catholic study. Both Monday and Wednesday

Study Sessions ARE OPEN to all. So, if you are interested and want to learn a

little more and share a little more about our faith in Jesus Christ, then this is

FOR YOU! Call the office if you have any questions!

You’ve been GREAT to support the Farmer’s Table these past weeks. I know many have received the

bounty and in turn have shared it with both family and friends! Thank you for your great kindness!

This week you will notice the Large Baskets in the Mother Teresa Vestibule with signs Plastic Bags for the

Homeless. These plastic bags will be cut into strips, crocheted and then made into a roll-up blanket for the

homeless. Your support of this combined effort of our Day School with the Kiwanis Club of Berea would be

greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU for ALL your financial support and generosity and especially your SKILL at navigating the

Kraft Street road CLOSURES. Soon enough it will be ALL NEW! Have a blessed week!

Family Perspective

We are working longer hours and have less family

and leisure time. Today Jesus reminds us that we

cannot serve two masters; “You will be devoted to

one and despise the other.” We need to choose.

Make a choice you won’t regret. Choose God and

family over the love of money and things.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovic

Director of Music and Liturgy

Happy fall on September 23rd! Be-

fore I get into the readings, I would

like to brag about the Traditional

Choir for a short bit! This year, we

have officially gained six new members! Three so-

pranos, an alto, and one soprano / flautist! We are up

to 22 members, which makes for a tight fit up in the

choir loft. However, as I tell the music ministry, this

is a really great problem to have! I’ve been in the

process of buying new music and hymnals and up-

dating our library so that everything is in order for

rehearsals. Come and make more problems for me by

joining choir. It’s a time consuming task that I am

happy to do, because the positive energy that Tradi-

tional Choir has for working hard and having fun

makes it worth it! If you are interested in causing me

more problems by joining the choir, please email me

at the address at the end of this article!

Out of all the gospel readings, I am most

fond of the parables. It is Jesus’ way of telling his

message in a less complicated style so that his chil-

dren can understand! Some people are really good at

learning just by hearing the theory of a concept; I

learn much better when I have an example that I can

relate to. I’ve heard that the best way to judge some-

one’s character is by how they treat a waiter at a res-

taurant. This weekend’s parable echoes how your

honesty and loyalty in small things is proof of how

you are with big things. Be mindful that your actions

and interactions mirror your love of Christ, for that

will show who you truly are!

Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional

Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at

7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in

choir, cantoring, or playing an instrument during

mass, please call or see Mrs. Angela Kovic after

mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office num-

Believe it or not, just a little over 3 months until

Christmas; you know what that means…our

Annual Yankee Candle Sale has begun. Catalogs

and order forms went home with all students

last week or were handed out at our Annual

Parent Meeting. If you don’t have a child or

grandchild in the school and would still like to participate in

this sale, catalogs are in the rectory office or you may pur-

chase online. Visit www.yankeecandlefundraising.com and

enter Group Number 990001283 in the Start Shopping box.

Then shop for catalog items and online exclusives to help us

reach our goal. The top 3 individual sellers will receive a

special prize. Remember, Yankee Candle items make wonder-

ful gifts for the Christmas holiday or even great hostess gifts

for Thanksgiving. All orders must be received by October 1st.

We appreciate everyone’s support.

Parents, as a reminder from our recent Family email, don’t

forget, our school wide Stewardship/Discipleship Activity

currently going on. Students are working in conjunction with

the Berea Kiwanis on a Waterproof Bedroll project. These

bedrolls are made from recycled shopping bags; are light-

weight, and easy to carry. Bedrolls are distributed to the

homeless in the Cleveland area. It takes 500-700 bags for

one bedroll. We appreciate everyone’s help and support on

this project. We will be collecting bags through the month of

January. Students may bring their bags to Mrs. Meehan’s

classroom or they may be dropped off at the school office.

Thank you all for your generosity toward this Stewardship

activity. Together we can make a difference.

Over the summer, the Berea Police sponsored an essay con-

test asking middle schoolers and high schoolers for feedback

and suggestions on how police officers can work better with

the local community. The students’ ideas ranged from police

attending block parties to conducting classes on gun safety.

We are proud to announce that two of the middle school

winners are our own St. Mary students. Winners in the 7th-

8th-grade category were Molly Waters, first place, and Megan

Slattery, second place. All winners were told that their sug-

gestions would be studied to see which could be imple-

mented. Former Chief Grecol also told the students “your

age group holds the most promise, when we talk to the com-

munity, we want to hear from you.” Congratulations to all

participants and winners. Your involvement and interest in

the local community is inspiring!!

Joyfully Gifted Retreat

God has prepared each one of us in a unique way to

share in his glory. You have been gifted with special

qualities that make you who you are. The best of these

gifts are called charisms — and they are the primary

means Christ reveals himself through you.

Do we all receive charisms? If you have been baptized,

yes. The Holy Spirit gives us what we need to live out

our own personal mission. Just as our life situations and

vocations differ, so too do the charisms we each receive.

At the Joyfully Gifted retreat on October 12th, we will

prayerfully discern the gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit.

We will reflect on our experiences, ask ourselves key

questions, and seek out the patterns in our life we may

have previously missed.

St. Mary is sponsoring this very special one-day experi-

ence. It features a top-notch presenter, breakfast and

lunch, and you. There is no cost to attend. To reserve a

place contact John Mastandrea at jmastan-

[email protected] before September 30. Say yes to

this wonderful day… and yes to discovering the gifts

God has given you.
