April 28, 2019 - Divine Mercy

Happy Easter Parishioners and Friends,

It’s been another holy week as the Church celebrated the fullness

of Easter with solemnity and music at the 9am Mass every day this past

week and today, the 2nd

Sunday of Easter, also known as Sunday of Divine

Mercy, the Church celebrates this amazing gift Christ bestowed upon us all,

his peace and the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures this weekend reveal God’s grace – particularly to

the doubting apostle, Thomas in the Gospel of St. John, who cries out, “My Lord and my God!”

Since Messianic expectations held that resurrection from the dead would be a sign of the coming of the

reign of God, today’s Gospel reading stands as verification of Jesus’ messiahship. Jesus’ presence, despite the

locked doors is a shock. But the encounter with the resurrected Jesus in John’s Gospel isn’t about the end-times

(the coming reign of God) in so much as it is a commissioning. Though the term “apostle” is not used by John,

here Jesus clearly commissions the disciples and to accompany them Jesus gives the disciples two gifts, his peace

and the Holy Spirit.

The words of our readings and our liturgy are given to us to touch us with the Holy Spirit, offer peace

and deepen our faith in Jesus Christ. Listen to these words. Experience the Risen Christ in your midst. We are

not alone. Let him calm your fears, bring you healing and empower you and me to invite others to touch him

and proclaim with Thomas, “My Lord and my God!”

NEXT WEEKEND Saturday May 4th, Deacon Candidate Matt Harley, who has been with

us at St. Mary in a liturgical and worship role this past year, while in his final year of

education and formation for the Permanent Diaconate, WILL BE ORDAINED as a Per-

manent Deacon in the Church on Saturday, May 4th at 10:00am at The Cathedral of St.

John the Evangelist. I know his family is thrilled, as are we, and his home parish of St.

Ambrose, and his work community, Padua Franciscan High School. Congratulations,

Deacon Matt! Know that the Ordination Mass is open to the public and all are wel-

come. As in the past, it will be live streamed through the Diocesan website,

www.dioceseofcleveland.org

ALSO NEXT WEEKEND Sunday, May 5th at the 11:30am

Mass our 2nd

Graders will be making their First Holy Communion!

These little ones are so excited about their Special Day and I know

their families and extended families will be PRESENT to celebrate

with them. RESERVED SEATING will be arranged for the First

Communion students and the Church will be FULL at the 11:30am

Mass! Come and celebrate with them as they come to the Table of

the Lord for the very first time! Congratulations and many prayers,

today and every day!

I offer you my gracious THANKS for your

remarkable generosity in the Easter Sunday

Collection, as well as for the Holy Thursday

needy collection, the Good Friday Holy Land Collection and the special Second Collection

on Easter Sunday morning! THANK YOU for your generous support and financial stew-

ardship, primarily to the Parish and to the additional requests made on you! I pray that

we continue to recognize God’s gifts and give back in gratitude! Thank you!

Mother Teresa

“Closer to God”

… Every work of love, done with a full

heart, always brings people closer to

God.

Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)

Family Perspective

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you!” As Jesus

gives witness to God’s love and forgiveness, each of us

is called to live this same mission. Parents and spouses

have the opportunity to give witness to the faithful

love of God for each other. They do this in the ways

they hold each other accountable to live the gospel

and in the times they mercifully forgive and reconcile.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovic Director of Music and Liturgy

PERSISTENCE IN FAITH

Another week, another chance to celebrate the glorious

feast of Easter! Luckily, the liturgical Easter season will last

until Pentecost, which is the weekend of June 9th. You

still have a reason to keep up your lovely Easter decora-

tions! This weekend's gospel reading from the book of

John tells the story about Jesus revealing himself to the

disciples, and yet Thomas, who was not there at the

time, has his doubts. We can look at Thomas, who asked

for physical proof that the Lord has risen, and say that he

simply did not have enough faith. Jesus gives Thomas the

chance to see his wounds, and then says that those who

believe without seeing are blessed. I feel like I can relate

to Thomas, though! It has to take a lot of courage and

faith to accept that the impossible has happened!

We are all human beings, born with the Original Sin from

Adam and Eve. It is in our nature to doubt, to question,

and to fumble from the path. It is the amazing power of

God, with his grace and mercy that allows us to come

back after each time we may have these thoughts, as long

as we choose to try again! This weekend is also the Sun-

day of Divine Mercy. Even though we may find ourselves

to be Thomas at one point or another, God is always

there, happy to welcome us back once again. Do not see

your uncertainty as a weakness of spirit, even though it

may be; see it as an opportunity to experience God's love

again and again, as he will always do for his beloved

children.

Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir rehearses on

Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. If you are interested in

participating in choir, cantoring, or playing an instrument

mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number

is 440.243.3877 ext 27.

We are happy to announce that Martin Dober has petitioned and been called by The Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez for Priesthood Ordi-nation. It is the responsibility of the Church to present to the bishop suit-able candidates for ordination. It is the bishop’s responsibility to weigh the recommendations of those in charge of formation as well as the larger Church community. Through this notice the members of St. Mary Parish are given the opportunity to offer their personal input on the suitability of this candidate for or-dination either directly to the bishop or to me as Pastor of the Par-ish. Your relationship to this man during his years of formation gives your input a special importance. We ask your prayerful support dur-ing these final days of discernment and preparation. Father John P. Singler
