Experiencing the Kingdom of God through Prayer, Presence and Praise (Week 2, Presence)

A critical juncture in my faith journey was my time in college. At the age of 18, I did not want to admit that I was very impressionable, and that I was looking to the example of older adults (which at that age meant those in their late 20's!). God provided the right friends along the way to keep me in the path of asking great questions of God, praying and seeking out church community. At the age of 22, I moved to Texas and very quickly discovered Christian women and men who had the gift of presence. They listened; acknowledged my struggling heart and would throw in words or phrases here and there to challenge. I began to gravitate to the presence of middle-aged adults, including professors, mentors, and couples from my church community. These relationships were "safe" because they first offered me a space of unconditioned love and acceptance, and they gently challenged, mainly through example. One particular couple, Lester and Nancy, welcomed me into their home for casual visits with these instructions: "Now that you have been here once and know where the kitchen is, make yourself at home. Don't ask, just help yourself!" Wow, this was a crazy version of Southern hospitality, which challenged my more ordered, Lancaster County, PA concept of politeness! This and many other households became used to my casual drop-in phone calls: "Hi, this is Tim. How are things going? Say, you and Lester wouldn't happen to be around this evening?" Exercising my spiritual gift of bachelorhood, I knew how to make myself available for a great home-cooked meal—and loving presence! Without a doubt, these experiences gave me the greatest hope for my journey forward with Christ. God mediates his love through the Body of Christ. In today's Gospel we can easily see how Jesus is present to the needs of the crowds that press him. And yet, how often do we consider the other side? Jairus made a decision to press into Christ, to present his needs to Jesus, and the woman with the hemorrhage did the same. Nothing got in her way to move as close to Jesus as she possibly could. To be present in a meaningful way means to learn the path of appropriate vulnerability with others. Jesus is here: in the Blessed Sacrament; in the sacrifice of the Mass; in persona Christi sacramentally; in his Mystical Body—in you and me. As we continue to present ourselves to him daily in prayer, his Spirit will bring others alongside. We become the living presence of Christ to those around us. Evangelization takes place one relationship at a time, as together we speak of God's truth; give witness to the beauty of our faith and liturgy, and know of God's goodness in our times together. Family of Nazareth, pray for us! Fr. Tim

The Basic Teachings of the Catholic Faith program offers a general introduction to the theological principles found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While some of the courses are primarily for catechists, they are general enough to offer content useful to any Catholic adults who wish to deepen their understanding of the Church’s teachings and in so doing, become better equipped for Christian discipleship and evangelization. Each of the five segments offers 6 Diocesan clock hours of instruction. $50 for all five classes. FREE for Saint Mary Cathedral parishioners who serve, or seek to serve, in Faith Formation ministry.

Padre Tim

Gospel Meditation. Today's Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on to resurrect the young girl.

Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one story -- the long-suffering woman or the young, innocent girl -- and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning.

Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappointment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted commu-nity and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace."
