Fourth Sunday of Lent

2

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength,” Deut. 6:5. This first commandment of the Ten Commandments “summons man to believe in God, to hope in him, and to love him above all else,” (CCC 2132). We exhibit this love in our worship: “Adoring God, praying to him, offering him the worship that belongs to him, fulfilling the promises and vows made to him are acts of the virtue of religion which fall under obedience to the first commandment,” (CCC 2135). For some the words “promises,” “vows,” and “obedience,” sound restrictive. Who is God to tell me what I have to do? Why can’t I choose my own happiness? These questions come to us from a society imbued with relativism and a very short horizon: one’s own understanding rather than the broad horizon of God’s infinite love, wisdom and knowledge. We are designed for worship. Think about this: how easy is it to give up an attachment to a particular favorite food, Netflix program, or vice during Lent? What about those more serious attachments: envy of what another has (perhaps their position of power or influence at work); another’s wealth; lust for that which we feel we lack in intimacy, perhaps manifest in what we seek to view on the internet; anger and resentment over a situation that we cannot control; the slothful lack of diligence in small things because we give up hope for change, for spiritual and personal growth? All of these point to disordered worship: putting something or someone else before God. St. Augustine gives us great hope in this Sunday’s Office of Readings: “The Lord tells us: ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ In these few words he gives us a command and makes a promise . . . Let us do now what he commands. Let us follow in the footsteps of the Lord. Let us throw off the chains that prevent us from following him. Who can throw off these shackles without the aid of the one addressed in these words: ‘You have broken my chains?’ Another psalm says of him: ‘The Lord frees those in chains, the Lord raises up the downcast.’ Those who have been freed and raised up follow the light. The light they follow speaks to them: ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness.’ The Lord gives light to the blind.” True worship is echoed in the cry, “Claim me once more as your own, Lord!” We rejoice this Laetare Sunday because Christ—the Light of the World—will, at our invitation, bring great illumination to our hearts and minds. We follow Him as we continue our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and we rejoice because as we practice true worship, He re-orders our desires. We learn to enjoy the goods of this world in relation to the will of the Father, and the peace of Christ rules deep within. And we learn to yearn to follow the Beloved wherever He leads us. Fr. Tim

Missionary works of Cross Catholic Outreach: Fr. Antony Savarimuthu, our resident priest, speaks on behalf of Cross Catholic Outreach and its ministry around the world this weekend. Cross Catholic Outreach is a Catholic organization whose mission is to mobilize the global Church to transform the poor and their communities materially and spiritually for the glory of Jesus Christ. It reaches out to the poorest of the poor countries in Asia, Central America, South America, and, more specifically, Caribbean countries such as Haiti.

There are committed bishops from the U. S. as board members. More than 100 bishops from the U. S. have endorsed Cross Catholic Outreach, including Bishop Joe Vásquez. It is up to the generosity of parishioners to support this valuable ministry, extending your love towards the poor around the world during this time of Lent. You can reach Fr. Antony by his phone: 551-697-9564, or email [email protected] for further details.

P. Tim

Everyday Stewardship

So you never have been that serious about a stewardship way of life? It's not that you have been greedy or unloving toward others. You give of yourself when you determine there is a real need. However, you haven't intentionally worked toward surrendering all you are, all you have, and all you do to your God. It's hard because when you compare yourself to others, you seem pretty good. You aren't some prodigal child who needs to return to God because you have lived a life full of sin and selfishness.

Yet, there lies the problem. We can easily feel we aren't so bad, so why change anything? We can lull ourselves into a belief that we will probably get to heaven, therefore why do more? Assurance of salvation is another topic, but basically we can look at our life as a series of transactions with God.

However, we shouldn't determine our actions based upon what we get. The actions of a loved one are due to the love for one's beloved. Jesus gave his life out of love for us. He has shown us what complete surrender looks like. He does not need our surrender but wants it because that is what those in love do. This Lent, perhaps our prayer should not be to simply be better stewards, but to love Him more. Then our motivation will not be based upon what we should do but on what we are moved to do out of love.

– Tracy Earl Welliver., MTS

April 14, Palm Sunday— regular Sunday schedule; noon Mass will begin in the Donahue Gym; join us in the gym for the procession.

April 16, Tuesday—6:30am Mass only; 10:30am Chrism Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Parish (all are invited); no confessions or 12:05pm Mass.

April 17, Wednesday—6:30am Mass; 8:30am Cathedral School Mass (public welcome); 11:00am-noon confession—last day for confessions in Holy Week; 12:05pm Mass.

April 18, Holy Thursday—7:00pm Mass of the Lord’s Supper (bilingual); 9:00pm-midnight Adoration in Bishops Hall. No confessions or daily Masses.

April 19, Good Friday—Noon Stations of the Cross; 2:00pm Celebration of the Lord’s Passion; 8:00pm Tenebrae Service. No confessions or daily Masses.

April 20, Holy Saturday—8:45pm Easter Vigil Mass in Cathedral (bilingual). No confessions or 12:05pm Mass.

– Tracy Earl Welliver., MTS

Chair of Pro-Life Committee Commends Rule Separating Abortion from Title X Family Planning. The Department of

Health and Human Services announced on Feb. 22, that it finalized “The Protect Life Rule,” regulations for the federal Title X family planning program. The Rule requires clear financial and physical separation between Title X funded projects and programs or facilities where abortion is a method of family planning. Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, Chairman of the U.S. Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued the following statement commending HHS: “I applaud the Trump Administration for reaffirming that abortion is not family planning. Abortion ends the lives of families’ most vulnerable members, as well as damaging the spiritual, mental and physical health of mothers. Although the USCCB continues to have strong objections to government promotion and funding of contraceptives, we have long supported enforcement of the abortion funding restrictions in Title X, and we are pleased to see that the Administration has taken seriously its obligation to enforce those restrictions. We are also grateful that this rule eliminates the requirement that doctors in Title X clinics refer and counsel for abortion, which previously ensured that all Title X clinics and staff had a close connection with abortion.”
