Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 5:13-16

What does it mean to be salt and light? If we listen carefully to Jesus’ words, we gain some direction. To be salt means to bring taste, zest, and joy to life. We are asked to liven things up a bit by allowing the joy of our faith to spill over into the lives of others. Only a sincere and deep relationship with God can freshen up humanity and set it on proper course. To be light means that our faith must translate into action so that we can be Christ for others and extend the same arm of mercy and compassion that Christ did. Our acts of piety, then, cannot be directed solely at ourselves. Prayer is never about self-benefit but must always be directed toward union with God, deepening our relationships with one another and learning how to be effective stewards of the beautiful universe God has entrusted to our care.

The Master gives us wise direction in terms of how we can best become the salt and light he desires. Listen carefully to the Beatitudes. Think about the oppression and alienation that exists in our world, the violence and prejudice, the anger and the hatred, the fear and the shame. All of these things require action. The poor need food, housing, and clothes. Hatred must be replaced by love. Retaliation and violence by forgiveness. Our thoughts and speech can become more like Christ. We can change and continue to change. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman said, “To live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.”

But it doesn’t end with just offering the bandages needed to heal wounds. It must go deeper. We must ask ourselves what has happened that we have found ourselves in this place with these wounds and divisions. What are their causes? Together we must address these systemic problems, politically and spiritually, and face the truth. Only then will we truly be salt and light. But then again, we may not like what the light shows us.

Ni siquiera nos podemos imaginar el mundo sin sal y sin luz; ambos son importantes para la vida humana. La sal da sabor a la comida y la luz incrementa la visibilidad. Por esta razón, nuestro compromiso al discipulado cristiano por medio del bautismo debe de dar sabor y luz al estilo de Cristo. El discipulado siempre debe de llevar al discernimiento del cómo se relaciona la persona con Dios y con los demás. En las lecturas, especialmente el Evangelio, Jesús dice claramente que si la sal pierde su sabor no sirve para nada. Advierte claramente a sus discípulos con la siguiente catequesis: “Ustedes son la sal de la tierra. Si la sal se vuelve insípida, ¿cómo se le devolverá el sabor? Ya no sirve para nada y se tira a la calle para que la pise la gente.” (Mateo 5:13). Enseguida, también dice: “Ustedes son la luz del mundo.” (Mateo 13:14). ¡Vaya compromiso el que se tiene al ser discípulo de Jesús!

Ahora, la pregunta es: ¿Qué clase de sabor doy? Soy persona amargada, egoísta que donde me presento cambia el ambiente y la conversación por la negatividad que perciben los demás en mí o por el contario, soy sal y luz en la familia, trabajo y comunidad. No se debe de olvidar que Cristo es la sal y la luz para todos. “‘Parece poca cosa’ pero el Señor ‘con pocas cosas nuestras hace milagros, hace maravillas’ por lo tanto, es necesario tener esta actitud de ‘humildad’ que consiste en buscar solamente ser sal y luz.” (Papa Francisco). Pero, ojo, no se puede ser sal y luz sin relación personal con Cristo que es sal y luz en mí. ©LPi

On Jan 20, the Cathedral Saint Vincent de Paul Conference, with our Knights of Columbus hosted our annual MLK Day of Service for our neighbors experiencing home-lessness. With the generosity of our

parish family we were able to serve over 110 of our sisters and brothers with backpacks, warm caps, new socks, health screenings, lunch, fellowship and love. Thanks to Cathedral office and school staff, and especially Principal LeGros, Louis Barron, Louise Porfirio, Rudy Gonzales, Brian Trinque and Fr. Daniel Liu.

weekend, Catholics in Central Texas are being asked to support Catholic higher education in our diocese. This collection directly supports our campus ministry programs at the colleges and universities in our diocese. These include communities at the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Baylor Universi-ty, Texas State University, Mary Hardin-Baylor, St. Edward’s University and other smaller college campuses. The goals of Catholic campus ministry are to build a faith community, bring the message of Christ to the academic world and prepare future leaders of society and our Church. Cathedral School of Saint Mary

As we enter February, the school community reflects on many exciting events that took place in January. Among them was a successful Catholic Schools Week. Below are some of the fun events that took place during this celebration:

The school community partnered with St. Vincent de Paul in a successful canned food drive.

The students took part in the art activity, “What does being at CSSM mean to you?”

Our Student Choir sang at the Noon Mass on January 26.

We hosted a successful Open House & Alumni welcome.

We held crazy hair & door decoration contests.

Students partners with a friend and came to school dressed as twins.

We hosted the Presentation of Colors by Tejanos In Action veterans.

Fr. Daniel shared his vocation story with the students. Students wore their favorite university's jersey. CSSM parents provided a delicious breakfast and lunch for

the faculty and staff.

And as always, the best moment was celebration Mass as a community.

Housed in New Orleans in the 1700’s, the Usulines, strong women of faith, expressed their communal faith and individuality through music. Fittingly, Austin Baroque Orchestra is bringing this beautiful and rare music to our Cathedral, which housed a convent in the early 20th century. KMFA announcer Sara Schneider will also read excerpts of the sisters’ letters and journals, and the orchestra will perform on instruments of the period. Concert by Jeffrey Jones-Ragona: Our Cathedral music

director will perform Vaughan Williams' "On Wenlock Edge," a set of songs for tenor and strings, with the Artisan String Quartet, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-29. Performance to be hosted by Austin Chamber Ensemble and will also feature music by Antonin Dvorak. Jeffrey says, "It has been a dream of mine for over 20 years to perform this beautiful music with world class musicians-- a 'bucket list' item I'm at last realizing with the Artisan String Quartet and pianist Martha Ahern. I hope to see many of my Cathedral family there to hear this beautiful music, by one of our favorite composers of sacred music." Both performances are at 7:30pm, at First Presbyterian Church (8001 Mesa Dr .), and there's lots of free parking, too! Information and tickets are available at www.AustinChamberEnsemble.org

What’s the Buzz? When a new store or restaurant opens in the area, there can be quite a buzz. People want to see what the place is like. If the establishment is lucky, a positive word of mouth can spread all over the area. The challenge then becomes keeping that buzz alive. If people start to think that the new place is not as good as advertised or they had hoped, the crowds will dwindle and soon the new place will simply become an old place. Even worse, it could become a closed place.

If you were a store owner, what would you do to attract people? Would you always put your best foot forward? How hard would you work to show everybody that your place is worth repeated visits and patronage?

You may not be an entrepreneur with your own business, but you do have your parish community. This is your community and what you do and how you act in the world around you will either add to a buzz or a lack of interest. How you use the gifts you and your community have been given will do a lot to attract people and cause them to talk. You will be like a city on top of a mountain that no one can miss. Can your light shine so bright that it can be seen from miles around? You may be only one person, but you are a part of something greater than yourself. Your stewardship can easily become contagious. La Corresponsabilidad Diaria

¿Por qué tanto alboroto? Cuando se abre una nueva tienda o restaurante en el área, puede haber un gran alboroto. La gente quiere ver cómo es el lugar. Si el establecimiento tiene suerte, una recomendación positiva puede pasar de boca en boca y extenderse por toda el área. El desafío se convierte en mantener vivo ese alboroto. Si la gente comienza a pensar que el nuevo lugar no es tan bueno como lo anunciaron o no es lo que esperaban, la multitud disminuirá y pronto el nuevo lugar simplemente se convertirá en un lugar antiguo. Peor aún, podría convertirse en un lugar cerrado. Si fueras dueño de una tienda, ¿qué harías para atraer a la gente? ¿Siempre pondrías tu mejor esfuerzo? ¿Qué tan duro trabajarías para mostrarles a todos que vale la pena repetir visitas y patrocinios a tu lugar? Puede que no seas un emprendedor con tu propio negocio, pero sí tienes tu comunidad parroquial. Esta es tu comunidad y lo que haces y cómo actúas en el mundo que te rodea aumentará la expectativa o la falta de interés en ella. Meet the Musicians

Marcia Kaylakie—Soprano Music has always been a very special form of worship for me. This is my 15th years as a Schola member. I have been singing in church choirs since I was 8 years old! When I sing, I can lift my soul to God in the Trinity. Asking about a favorite piece of music is like asking me which child is my favorite, but I love medieval music in a special way. Somehow it speaks to me. When we as a Schola are singing with one voice, it is a transcendent moment. Being part of the worship at the Cathedral is such a joyous thing! ___________________________________________________

Question: Why is it so important that we register in a parish?

Isn’t it good enough that we go to Mass?

Answer: Registration is the official way we join a parish

community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times, young adults who have moved away for years think they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses, Confessions, and devotions are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish.
