Parishioners who are unable to attend Sunday Mass may receive the

Eucharist at home on a weekly basis. Please call the rectory to arrange

for a visit by a Special Minister of Holy Communion.

RECONCILIATION Saturdays at 4:00PM and by appointment.

BAPTISM Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sundays of each month

at 1:30PM. Please call the Rectory to schedule a Baptism celebration and

to arrange for an initial interview and a Baptism preparation meeting for

parents. Baptisms will take place on the second & fourth Sundays, at

1:30PM.

MARRIAGE Marriages are celebrated on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at

prearranged times. Please call the rectory at least six months in advance

of an intended date in order to make an appointment to complete the

preliminary arrangements, set a date for the wedding, and register for

the required marriage preparation program.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Anointing of the Sick is available every Saturday after the 8:30AM

Mass especially for parishioners who have medical procedures

scheduled for the coming week.

LADIES GUILD ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY:

Next Sunday, May 7th, the Ladies Guild Rosary

Altar Society will be having their annual May

Crowning of the Blessed Mother before the

10:30AM Mass. Ladies are asked to arrive by

10:15AM so as to assemble for the procession.

After mass, a luncheon will be given at Gino’s

Restaurant in Lindenhurst. For reservations,

A NIGHT AT THE RACES: St. Martin’s

Knights of Columbus present a Night at the

Races on Friday, May 5th at 7:00PM in the

Parish Center. Tickets are $12 for adults in

advance, and includes food, unlimited beer,

wine and soda, coffee, dessert, race program

and prizes. Tickets will be $15 at the door.

FROM THE PASTOR

THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

One of the important components of the many Resurrection accounts is the unexpected. There are multiple

stories of the Resurrection: Mary of Clopas, Mary Magdalene, Peter & John, and others. Over and over Jesus

had told the Apostles that He would die and “rise on the third day.” One would think that the Apostles

would have stayed around to see this promise that He would rise; even if just out of curiosity. But the

Gospels tell us they did not stay around. How quickly they forgot the promise that Jesus would “rise on the

third day.”

One example is the fact that Peter has returned to his old life of fishing along the Sea of Galilee. This is where

the resurrected Christ will appear to Peter as he has gone back to fishing and his former life. But it is this

Sunday’s Gospel that really gives us a good lesson. It is called the Road to Emmaus.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we find two disciples of Jesus going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem. They

are not given names, perhaps to save them the embarrassment of having forgotten the Lord’s promise that He

would “rise on the third day.” While they are making their way to this now long‐forgotten Roman garrison

called Emmaus, they are described by Saint Luke as “downcast.” They had already given up hope in the

promise of the Resurrection. This would make anyone “downcast.” All their hopes had been dashed. Jesus

seemed a failure. Death, it seems, had won on the cross. Ultimately, however, they will come to recognize

Jesus who walks with them now, but who is hidden from their understanding.

What is Saint Luke trying to teach us in this marvelous story? We are simply told that Emmaus was seven

miles from Jerusalem; but it is the direction on the map that gives us the answer. Theologians believe that

Emmaus was located west of Jerusalem. Therefore, they were walking toward the setting sun. They were

walking into darkness. More importantly they were walking away from the rising sun/Son. For Saint Luke,

everything in Jesus’ life was directed toward Jerusalem and the city of His death and Resurrection. These

disciples are walking away from Jesus and towards Emmaus, the outpost of the worldly powers of Rome. Or

as St. Augustine would say, they are walking from the City of God to the City of Man.

Once their eyes are opened and they realize Jesus now walking with them is the Resurrected Christ, they

stop, turn around and run toward Jerusalem. And they run back in the middle of the night! You try running 7

miles in the middle of the night after having already walked 7 miles in the wrong direction.

A final thought. What was it that allowed them to recognize the Lord? The Gospel tells us that Jesus ‘took the

bread and gave it to them.” I suppose they would have seen His hands which bore the scars of the Cross. In

that moment, they knew the One who stood before them now was the same One who died upon the Cross.

“It is the Lord.” Just as a warrior is proud of his battle scars, so the Lord proudly displays the scars that are

proof of His victory over the greatest battle ever fought: the battle of the grave. Like those disciples on the

Road to Emmaus, your own scars just might be an opportunity to “open our eyes” to the real presence of

Jesus who walks among us, but is hidden from our sight.

STEWARDSHIP – A Way of Life “Believing With Joy”

SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS: The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked

with Jesus all day, but it was not until they offered Him hospitality and He blessed and broke the

bread that they recognized Him. Simple acts of loving kindness still reveal the presence of God in

our midst.

For Christian stewards, spring begins with the somber self‐examination of Lent and culminates in

th4e celebration of the Resurrection and Ascension of Our Lord. In the lengthening days of early

spring and beyond, we are invited to focus on our stewardship of time, talent, and treasure and of

all the gifts God has given us.

On May 1st, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker. In some countries, this day is set

aside to honor the dignity of labor and the rights of workers. Husband of Mary, foster father of Je‐

sus, and carpenter of Nazareth, St. Joseph was a model steward, putting his entire life at the service

of God.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards who accept Jesus’ mission as

their own and depend on the Eucharist to nourish and sustain them for the challenge.

CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, compassion, and reverence

shared with us by our PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK TEAMS. They visit the sick in hospitals and

nursing homes, bringing the Eucharist and words of comfort. A commission as a Special Minister of

SOCIAL MINISTRY

EMPLOYMENT MINISTRY: At St. Martin’s

Employment Program we maintain a database

of personnel seeking employment in the local

Long Island market. We assist them by

providing counseling services including resume

development and by making available a wide

range of job search capabilities. Our extensive

client database covers a wide range of

employment experience ranging from office

work, sales help, factory work, food handling,

home care, and companions to assist the elderly.

If you can help, we can use volunteers on

Mondays & Wednesdays, for just four hours per

day, to assist people in finding suitable jobs. We

need parishioners who can interview clients,

prepare resumes, and perform job searches. If

you wish to help with this important ministry

please call Frank, Kathy, or Rosemary during

regular office hours or leave a message. This

ministry is staffed by volunteer case workers.

CARITAS AWARD: Catholic Charities of the

Diocese of Rockville Centre will be hosting their

annual Caritas Award Dinner on Thursday,

May 18th at Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage

State Park in Farmingdale. Please join them in

wavering commitment to the needy of Long Is‐

came to fetch the workers, members of the trade

unions; I did not speak out because I was not a trade

unionist. Afterwards, they came for the Catholics; I

did not say anything because I was a Protestant.

Eventually, they came for me, and there was no one

left to speak.” Please consider being a voice for

the voiceless. Write of all your elected

will be placed on the Altar of the Sacred Heart

for the intention of “all mothers and expectant

mothers as we prepare to honor them on Mother’s

LIFE CENTER WALK‐A‐THON: The Life

Center of Long Island will host its 1st Annual

Walk‐a‐thon on Saturday, May 6th at Marjorie

Post Park in Massapequa. Registration is

between 9:00AM and 10:00AM. Walk 1/2 mile

or 1.3 miles from 10:00AM until 12 Noon.
