I have good news and bad news. Which would you like first? OK, the good news. The good news is that we have raised about 90% of our goal towards the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Our goal from December 31, 2018 through January 31, 2019 is $85,900 and we have already raised $76,223. I am grateful for and proud of those who have made this possible. The bad news is that St. Martin’s parish is a bit short of our goal, as you can see. So please consider your donation to the Catho-lic Ministries Appeal. Every parish in every diocese across the world participates in the Appeal so that the “really big” diocesan wide projects can be successful: seminar-ies, hospital chaplaincies, prison ministries, housing for those who have various health needs, Catholic Charities, Immigration, and pro-grams for new single mothers. We have always surpassed our goal in every year in the past, so I don’t want this to be the first time we will miss our goal. Thank you for your continuous support of your parish.

GRATITUDE: We are grateful to the Saint Martin's School students and their parents for the generous food and toiletry drive on the first Friday of this month. We also command the principal, Mrs. Marti-nez and staff for coordinating and supporting this effort.

VOLUNTEERS: We are in need of more volunteers both for the office and for our thrift shop (corner of 110 and Oak St.) If you have some free time to donate please call us (631-264-4840) and stop at the office( Mon.- Fri. bet 10:00am & 12:30pm + 1:30pm & 4:00pm); we will be happy to chat with you and see how you can help with your time and energy. Thank you in advance for thinking about it.

The Chalking of the Doors I found the following extracted excerpts in a religious article store. It is called the “Chalking

of the Doors.” In many ways it reminds me of the beautiful Jewish custom of the mezuzah. Above the doors of many homes you may see a mysterious series of letters and numbers,

looking for all the world like an equation, inscribed in chalk over a doorway at your parish, or at the home of a friend. Maybe you thought you could figure it out. Maybe you were too embarrassed to ask, “What is that?”

If you don’t know what the chalk is all about, don’t be ashamed. You’re certainly not alone. Epiphany (also known as the “Twelfth Night”) marks the occasion of a time-honored Chris-

tian tradition of “chalking the doors.” The formula for the ritual—adapted for 2019—is simple: take chalk of any color and write the following above the entrance of your home: 20 + C + M + B + 19.

The letters have two meanings. First, they represent the initials of the Magi—Gaspar, Mel-chior and Balthazar—who came to visit Jesus in His first home. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at the begin-ning and the “19” at the end mark the year. Taken together, this inscription is performed as a re-quest for Christ to bless those homes so marked and that He stay with those who dwell therein throughout the entire year.

The chalking of the doors is a centuries-old practice throughout the world, though it appears to be somewhat less well known in the United States. It is, however, an easy tradition to adopt, and a great practice whereby we dedicate our year to God from its very outset, asking His blessing on our homes and on all who live, work or visit there.

The timing for the chalking of the doors varies somewhat in practice. In some places, it is done on New Year’s Day. More commonly, it is performed on the Feast of the Epiphany—the Twelfth Day of Christmas. Most often the chalking takes place after Epiphany Mass, and can be done at any church, home, or dwelling. Traditionally the blessing is done by either a priest or the father of the family. This blessing can be performed simply just by writing the inscription and of-fering a short prayer, or more elaborately, including songs, prayers and processions and the sprin-kling of holy water.

After many Epiphany Masses, satchels of blessed chalk, incense and holy water are distrib-uted. These can then be brought home and used to perform the ritual in the days following Epiph-any. Another common practice is to save a few grains of the Epiphany incense until Easter, so that it can be burned along with the Easter candle.

Practicing traditions like the chalking of the doors helps us to live our faith more concretely and serve as an outward sign of our dedication to Our Lord. The chalking of the doors of a home encourages Christians to dedicate their life at home to God and to others. Seeing the symbols over our doors can help to remind us, while passing in and out on our daily routines, that our homes and all those who dwell there belong to Christ. It also serves as a reminder of the welcoming the kings gave to Jesus. We should strive to be as welcoming to all who come to our beautiful homes to visit.

- Fr. Gerard Gordon

“When the song of the angels is stilled When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and the princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost To heal the broken To feed the hungry To rebuild the nations To bring peace among the people To make music in the heart.” (Dr. Howard Thurman) SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS: Jesus, whom God called, “My beloved Son,” is also the servant of whom Isaiah speaks in the first reading. We who are baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor. What will we do now as we proceed forward? Will we remember Christ is born in our world today through our love? Will we be unafraid to share this rich treasure? Will we be a beacon of hope and a lantern of love to a world weary with injustice and hostility? In many parts of the country, winter means snow and ice and hazardous travel. It’s a time of dor-mancy and of waiting. The earth lies sleeping, waiting for the longer days and warm spring rains to reawaken it to life and growth. Even the animals hibernate until spring. This waiting seems to be a necessary part of the cycle, an important preparation for the growth to come. How will we wait? LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who answer their baptismal call to embrace stewardship – our way of life- by placing their gifts and resources, their very selves, at God’s service not only in the Church but in the world. CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, handiwork, and helping shared with us by our BAPTISMAL GARMENT COMMITTEE. Garments are cut, edged in lace, and embroi-dered and then given to infants at baptism. Call Anne (631-598-2037) for more information or to join.

Thank you for sharing your gifts of treasure.

Do you fill your life with things? Your every moment with activity? What stars might sparkle in your vision if you take

time to focus? What will you bring to life in yourself this new year?

“Created in the image of God, human beings are by nature bodily and spiritual men and women made for one another, persons oriented toward communion with God and with one another, wounded by sin and in need of salvation, and destined to be conformed to Christ, the perfect image of the father, in the power of the Holy Spirit!” (International Theological Commission, Communion and Steward-ship: Human Persons Created in the image of God). Thank you for your support and prayers to end abortion.
