Well, with the right cards, a little luck and a steady dauber any of these might result in a triumphant “BINGO!” at one of Saint Dennis’ fabulous BINGO nights. Hosted in the parish center, generally on the first Thursday of the month (and a couple Saturdays), BINGO night features two sessions and great snacks at great prices (courtesy of Saint Dennis Athletics) all in a family- friendly atmosphere welcoming novice and seasoned players alike. Coordinated by parish staff members Sue Besler and Judy Hronek, the BINGO nights are supported by a group of dedicated volunteers. In addition, each month a select parish group supplies extra volunteers to keep the evening running smoothly. Sue notes that while there are a number of BINGO nights hosted by organizations on Madison’s East Side each week, the Saint Dennis BINGO is special, because it is reasonably priced and has a special section for families, where parents and children can play together. The proceeds support general parish operations and bring a great spirit of fellowship and fun to the community. Pastoral ChangesDear Parishioners,

I hope springtime has been a good one for all of you after a very long winter. Spring is also bringing some changes in priest personnel at Saint Dennis Parish. Bishop Robert C. Morlino announced last weekend that he has accepted the resignation of Father Kent Schmitt as Pastor (on medical leave) of Saint Dennis according to the norms of canon 538 §1, to pastor emeritus.

This means that Father Schmitt is now retired from active ministry as he continues to look after his health. Let us continue to keep him in prayers.

The Bishop also announced the appointment of Father Randy Timmerman as the new pastor of Saint Dennis Parish effective July 13, 2013. Father Timmerman was a Parochial Vicar at Saint Dennis in the mid-90’s and many of you will remember him from his days here. He is currently the pastor of Saint John Vianney Parish in Janesville, a thriving parish with a parochial school.

Father Allam will continue his ministry at Saint Dennis as the Parochial Vicar. Also announced was my appointment to Pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Beloit. This appointment will take effect on July 13, 2013, at which point I will cease to be the Director of Vocations and also Parochial Administrator of Saint Dennis Parish.

Please keep all our priests in your prayers, especially Father Schmitt.

Blessings,

Father Paul Ugo Arinze

Saint Anthony: More than Just Lost and FoundThe man we know as Saint Anthony was born August 15, 1195 in Lisbon

and given the name Fernando. His rich, noble family wanted him educated so he entered the Augustinian Abbey of Saint Vincent to study scripture and Latin classics. He then joined the priesthood.

After ordination, in 1219, he met five Franciscan monks en route to Morocco. Attracted to the Franciscan’s simple, evangelical lifestyle, he applied and was accepted. He changed his name to Anthony and was sent to Morocco. While there, he became seriously ill and so, tried to return home.

We might not have heard of Anthony if he hadn’t been asked to speak at an ordination of Dominicans and Franciscans in 1222. Impressing everyone there he was assigned to preach in northern Italy. The residents there wanted a preacher who not only spoke of the Bible, but lived it. Anthony did. He was eventually commissioned by the Vatican to produce a series of “Sermons for Feast Days.” He died in Padua, Italy on June 13th, 1231. He was only 36.

The following year, Pope Gregory IX, moved by the many miracles that occurred at Anthony’s tomb, declared him a saint. He was the second-fastest canonized saint, after Saint Peter of Verona.

The reason for invoking Saint Anthony’s help in finding lost or stolen things is traced back to an incident in which a valued book of psalms was stolen from him. Upon praying, it was returned to him. Shortly after his death people began praying through Anthony to find or recover lost and stolen articles. Because he traveled widely, Saint Anthony is also appealed to for safe travel, especially when ocean voyages are involved. ~ Anne Otter

Belize It or NotPlease pray for our 45 fellow parishioners as they travel to San Ignacio, Belize June 15-22. Most of

the time, we will be working at Santa Elena School--home to over 1000 students. We will spend one-on-one time with the students and their families. For three days, we will be leading the main programming for the school, including children’s ministry, field days, catechesis and large group presentations. Santa Elena also needs buildings painted, floors replaced, concrete work, computer maintenance in their computer lab and other projects too numerous to mention. At the community church, we will be making hundreds of rosaries with the people, holding prayer services, visiting the homebound, assisting at various liturgies and much, much more! I will be preaching at all the Masses that week and a special school Mass. May God bless our trip and the mission itself. ~ Deacon David Hendrickson

Change for BelizeFaith Formation students collected $1723.93 in our annual

“Change for Belize” drive this year. This broke all previous records and will be sent with our team from Saint Dennis to Santa Elena School in Belize this June. Deborah Reneau, Principal of Santa Elena, had this to say upon hearing what our students raised:

“I write to you on behalf of our school community who are very grateful of your generous donation. Your charitable donation will now allow us to purchase much-needed supplies and a small projector that will directly benefit the students of Santa Elena Primary School.

“We’d like you to know that your thoughtfulness will truly make a difference in the lives of over 1000 students. It is very rare when we receive donations of this magnitude at our school. We will use a substantial amount towards the school fees of those students that were chosen last year for the same cause. Once again, we are truly grateful for your donation and want you to be comforted in knowing that the staff will ensure that the money will be spent wisely.”

Thanks to all the students who helped make a difference in the lives of students in Belize! We couldn’t be more proud! ~ Lisa Harms, Faith Formation Coordinator Grades 4-8

Traveling BeadsThe Rosary Ministry consists of a group of six volunteers from Saint Dennis Parish. The rosary is

recited with the residents at Karmenta Nursing Home on a weekly basis and at Oak Park Place once a month. Parishioners from all of the East Side parishes are living in these environments and greatly appreciate the time spent with them.

Since I worked as a nurse in the field of geriatrics, I recognize this as one of the ways Catholics are able to keep in contact with their Catholic faith and their community. ~ M. Jane Baszynski

Journey to ConfirmationIn February, the confirmation class of 2013 had the opportunity

to participate in a retreat to ready ourselves for the very important sacrament of confirmation. The day began at 9:00 am Mass and consisted of many activities to enhance our faith ranging from discussions to a labyrinth. One activity was making rosaries. We made two, one for ourselves and one to donate. We watched a video called “Baggage” and talked about the kinds of baggage we carry and deal with in our lives and how God can help us with that baggage.

We also mapped our faith journey, writing down important points in our life such as sacraments or deaths and how our faith has strengthened us during those times. We learned about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit by lighting a candle representing each gift, then learned about the sacraments in which we use those gifts.

One of the most enriching portions of the day was spent walking through a labyrinth set up in the Upper Parish Center. It consisted of eleven stations which included looking in a mirror and thinking about things, sifting through sand while praying, planting a seed and thinking of the simplest things of life. This was a great opportunity to slow down and reflect on my faith and why I was being confirmed in the first place.

Overall the day was a very cool way to wrap up our journey as confirmondis and to learn more about our growing faith. With many engaging discussions, activities, and videos the retreat was a success. I definitely walked away more in touch with God and my Catholic faith. It helped us to understand the sacrament and ready ourselves to receive it! ~ Emma Dickinson

Spirit First updateThe very successful Spirit First campaign has now paid for the Festival garage and the new sound

system. Thank you for your generosity. We still need to pay off our loan for the metal church roof and now we need to extend the campaign for other projects. The school roof is currently leaking badly. In fact, the health department wrote us up for leaking in the kitchen. If the school roof is not repaired soon, we could jeopardize our hot lunch program. With that in mind, the Finance Council agreed to extend the Spirit First campaign to cover the cost of the new school roof, remodeling the bathrooms and fixing the very old plumbing which is not up to code. We are currently getting bids for these projects. We will refinance our current loan to pay for the roof. The bathrooms will be paid for as we receive your contributions. If you have any questions about Spirit First, contact Cheryl Porior-Mayhew at (608)246-5124 or [email protected]. We will keep you informed of our plans as we go forward. Again, thank you for your generosity and please keep the Spirit First campaign in your prayers and future plans. ~ Cheryl Porior-Mayhew, Business Manager

Student View: Variety Show TraditionThere are many wonderful traditions that come with being

a student at Saint Dennis School. During my nine years at this school I have enjoyed them all, but many of my favorite memories are of the annual Variety Show.

This event is really a great opportunity for everybody to come together – the students in the skits, as well as the parents, friends and family who are coming to watch the show. It is a really great way for everyone in the Saint Dennis community to get to know each other better and it creates lifetime memories for everyone who is part of it.

My greatest memory will always be my final Variety Show. Eighth grade has always been a pretty big deal at Saint Dennis, and so it was a very special moment for everyone. Our final class act was a recreation of the highlights from each of the nine years we spent together as friends and classmates. For me this was a great way of showing the whole Saint Dennis community how special our time here has been.

As I get ready to graduate from Saint Dennis School, I know that I will always cher-ish the memories I have from being part of this great event. It is a wonderful tradition that I hope continues for a long time. For me, the Variety Show is a great example of what peo-ple can accomplish when they set their mind to it and it creates memories that last a lifetime. ~ Sam Turk, 8th grader

Saint Dennis School Students Impress at Science FairEvery other year, students in Ms. Kim Maxson’s seventh and eighth grade science classes take on a

complex and challenging assignment – complete a project and presentation for the bi-annual Science Fair.

This year 53 students rose to the challenge. According to Ms. Maxson, the students started in Novem-ber finding a topic and finalized it by January. They then planned and conducted an experiment.

They wrote a ten-page paper citing at least four resources and explained the problem and procedure, and then provided data collection and conclusions based on their experiments.

The students also created a three-sided poster board to explain and accompany their findings, gave a two-three minute presentation to the class and had to be able to talk about their project during the afternoon (for other students) and evening (for parents, other adults and judges) of the Science Fair.

This year’s topics covered many different and creative areas. Sixteen winners were named, with first place going to Alex Schroeder (grade 7), who conducted paper airplane flight tests. Four second and third place, two from each grade, and seven honorable mentions were also awarded.

“I was very impressed by the outstanding job the students did on their projects and presentations,” says Ms. Maxson. “There were so many innovative topics and I appreciated all their focused effort and hard work.” See photos of the Science Fair at: http://sciencefairmarch2013.shutterfly.com/4. ~ Janet Masters

Parishioner Honored with Kohl Teaching AwardFor Saint Dennis parishioner Barb Trapp, her lifework has

been teaching and she has felt called to do so ever since she was in second grade. For twenty-six years, Barb has inspired her students and instilled in them a love of learning. Recently, Barb’s efforts have been recognized as she was honored with a Fellowship grant by the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation. Teachers must be nominated and then are chosen by a statewide committee. She is one of only 100 teachers statewide

to receive this honor, earning her school, Winnequah in Monona Grove, $1,000. Trapp hopes to use this money towards a school mascot costume as well as a banner for the outside of her building. “Children are our future. I want to do the best I can to make it a bright one for all,” Trapp said. “I hope to instill a lifelong love of learning in my second graders, so that they can be their best as adults and have all the opportunities open to them.” Congratulations on a job well done! ~ Lisa Harms, Faith Formation Coordinator Grades 4-8

So Much More Than Reading Aloud: The Ministry of the LectorLectors understand their role as a ministry and its importance to the entire liturgy.

Liturgy of the Word: For the lector it is proclaiming the Scriptures for the first and second reading

Eye-contact with members of the congregation; inviting all to listen, to respond with ‘THANKS BE TO GOD’: Yes, we believe what we have heard is God’s Word and embrace it for ourselves.

Caring enough to prepare the readings for the Sunday: Words are pronounced correctly, voice clear; loud enough, slow enough that all in the Congregation can hear and understand.

Time to be at church fifteen minutes before Mass begins: check in with the priest, go over names and places in Scriptures; check in with other ministers, be sure the Lectionary and Book of Gospels are in place, a moment to quiet oneself.

Overall, as a confirmed Catholic, the lector combines prayerful, intelligent preparation with one’s unique personality and skill.

Reverent handling of the Book, the Word of God: humbly aware the Lord longs to speak and be heard through what I am proclaiming.

Solemn entrance into the sanctuary, the lector is God’s chosen instrument. Those who have been lectors grow in awareness: We are transformed by what we have read.

Faith Formation Students Salute VeteranVeteran and parish member Niel

Rossmaessler recently took an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the Korean War memorial. When over 90 children in the K-3 Faith Formation program were asked how they could support Niel, the response was unanimous, “We can make a card for him!” And that is exactly what the children did. After a prayer in Church, the children were ushered into Fellowship Hall where they colored and wrote sentiments for the veteran. Children added their own creativity to airplanes, flags and stars that would eventually serve as well wishes. Sentiments included, “Thank you for serving our country” to “Say Hi to the President for me.” Only out of the mouths of babes! ~ Joanna Gehrmann, Faith Formation Coordinator Grades K-3
