The Easter Vigil: Holiest of Nights Saturday, March 31 at 8:00 PM

The Easter Vigil is unlike any other vigil Mass during the Church’s liturgical year. Whereas the usual Saturday evening vigil Mass is the same Mass as that which will be celebrated on Sunday, this is not true of the Easter Vigil. The Easter Vigil is its own distinctive liturgy. It is the most solemn of all the liturgies of the Church, with its own form and texts. Only one Easter Vigil may ever be celebrated in each parish during the annual Triduum. The Easter Vigil is never repeated in a year. The Easter Vigil consists of four parts: First, the lighting of the Easter fire, the blessing of the new Paschal candle and the Paschal Proclamation (Exsultet), an extended hymn of praise of Christ the Light. Second, the Liturgy of the Word follows, which is extended with several readings. There are a total of 9 possible lections assigned to the Easter Vigil: 7 Old Testament readings, 1 Epistle (Romans) and the Gospel (Mark). (This year, 4 Old Testament readings will be proclaimed.) Third, the celebration of Baptism and/or the renewal of our baptismal promises follows the homily. (This year in our parish, two adults will be baptized and confirmed and will receive their first Holy Communion, and two adults, who are already baptized, will be brought into Full Communion with the Catholic Church.) Finally, the Liturgy of the Eucharist is celebrated, concluding with the Solemn Dismissal with the sung Easter “Alleluia!” Unlike the usual Saturday vigil Mass, the Easter Vigil must begin in total darkness, taken according to its strictest interpretation. A twilight start is not sufficient. According to the norms of the Church, the entire celebration of the Vigil must take place at night, defined as no earlier than one hour after sunset. All of the parishes of the Archdiocese have been reminded of this requirement. The Easter Vigil is not brief; neither is it always able to be scheduled at an hour of convenience, especially with the new, earlier daylight-savings change. But it is the most solemn and uplifting annual celebration of our sacred mysteries, a time of deep reflection and expectant waiting, of prayer, joy, and participation in the resurrection of the Lord. We are awaiting our master's return with our lamps full and burning, so that he will find us awake and seat us at his table (cf. Luke 12:35ff). Let us enter into the spirit of Easter by giving our time generously on Holy Saturday to our celebration of that “third day” when Christ rose triumphant from the grave! Rev. David C. Michael, Pastor

Holy Week is the most sacred week in the Liturgical year. It leads us from the end of Lent into the Sacred Triduum - Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. To help us better observe these holy days, here are a few (of many) practices and traditions to help us focus on the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus during this Holy Week.

Palm (Passion) Sunday: Palms are distributed as we recall Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Since the palms given out at Mass are blessed, they may not be disposed of as trash. If not kept in your home they should be respectfully buried, burned or returned to the church.

Monday - Wednesday: Starting Monday and for the rest of Holy Week, consider an intensification of your Lenten practices such as simpler meals and extra sacrifices, almsgiving and prayer. Some people use these days to do a spring house cleaning in preparation for the Easter celebration. This custom may have come from the ancient Jewish practice of preparing the home for Passover.

Holy Thursday: The Mass of the Lord’s Supper commemorates Christ’s institution of the Eucharist, the institution of the Priesthood and Jesus’ command for us to love one another. At the end of Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is brought to a side altar or other reserved place for repose until Mass is celebrated at the Easter Vigil. One ancient tradition which is making a bit of a comeback is the custom of visiting seven churches, spending a few moments in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament at each church. Though this devotion is more challenging in an area like the suburbs of Boston, it is still doable. It helps to have a plan. Even just going to a few churches is worthwhile. You can read much more online about the Pilgrimage to Seven Churches at http://www.ncregister.com/blog/dicamillo/to-the-seven-churches-go

Good Friday: This is the most solemn day of the Christian year. It is a day of fasting and abstinence, and unnecessary activities should be avoided. Silence and prayer are encouraged from noon to 3:00, the time when Jesus was on the cross. Consider meditating on the Stations of the Cross or the Seven Last Words of Christ. Good Friday is also the first day of the Divine Mercy Novena.

Holy Saturday: While we may need to make final preparations for the greatest feast of the year, this is still a quiet day as we remember Jesus in the tomb. Fasting this day is encouraged but not required. Attend the Easter Vigil if you can. It is the most beautiful and theologically significant of all Masses. Yes, it is long, but it is so worth it!

Easter Sunday: Christ is Risen. Alleluia! Celebrate the glorious Resurrection of our Lord.

Have a Blessed Holy week!
