MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

During Lent, in addition to the daily 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Masses, Stations of the Cross will be on Fridays at 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. in Spanish.

The Lenten Rules for Fast and Abstinence are: 1) Lent is to be observed by Catholics as a special season of prayer, penance, and works of charity. 2) Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the most important penitential days of the liturgical year. They are days of both fast and abstinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of absti-nence. 3) The rules for fasting are that only one full meal a day can be taken. Two small meals, ‘sufficient to maintain strength,’ are allowed but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals breaks the fast, but drinking liquids does not. The rule of fasting obliges Catholics from 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year. 4) Abstinence refers to refraining from eating meat. The rule of abstinence binds all Catholics age 14 years and older. 5) The substantial observance of the laws of fast and absti-nence is a serious obligation. Those whose work or whose health would be impaired are excused from fasting and ab-staining.

Peace and good! As we continue to reflect upon the challenges of the Jubilee of Mercy, I offer the following insights for your prayer and consideration. As one reflects on the concept of mercy, the following points are often found in the study of God’s mercy.

• Mercy is the ready willingness to help anyone in time of need, especially through pardon or reconciliation. It is a habitual inclination of the will.

• This means that mercy is an attitude on our part, a way of treating others and the world around us, which comes to us automatically in situations.

• Mercy is the compassionate care for others whereby one takes on the burden of another as one's own.

• Mercy is an active quality of the virtue of charity, motivated by love. While mercy is often treated as a rather benign term, its power is conveyed more accurately by looking at it in a scriptural context.

• Jesus is the most eloquent witness to mercy in the New Testament. He is never vague in his proclamation of God's mercy, and rather than just using parables or discourses, he reveals God's mercy in his everyday relations with people from all strata of society.

• Jesus is an active agent of God's mercy — confronting the crowd about to stone the woman taken in adultery, meeting the Samaritan woman at the well, weeping with the other mourners at the death of Lazarus, and ultimately taking up the cross laden with the sins of the world and being led to his death. (Study Guide on Mercy)

Archbishop José Gomez shares the following insights:

The works of mercy are the works of peace and the works of justice — for the poor, the sick, the suffering and the vulnerable, and for all those driven to the margins of society. In our personal relationships, mercy means having more patience and tenderness with those who are close to us. Mercy means giving people the benefit of the doubt, giving them a second chance. We are called to be missionaries of the love and mercy of God.

As we celebrate this Jubilee of Mercy, we also begin to prepare for the Bishop Lenten Appeal (BLA). Bishop Loverde invites each of us to reflect upon our support of the BLA. As we celebrate this Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy.”

ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH HERNDON, VIRGINIA FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 7, 2016

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish ministries: We thank our parishioners who hosted the Icon of Divine Mercy this past week. The three families joined the parish community and faithful of the Diocese in praying through the intercession of the Divine Mercy for God’s mercy, love, justice, and peace to reign. Many blessings on you and your families for entering into the ministry of prayer. We thank our staff of the parish facilities who oversaw the snow removal from the Blizzard of 2016. We also thank the staff who spent hours clearing the doorways, sidewalks, etc…in order to provide a safe environment for us to enter the Church, parish/school offices, and school. Many blessings for your labor! We thank our parishioners for sharing their reflections on the importance and blessings of the Bishop Lenten Appeal (BLA) at the weekend Masses. The three parishioners offered a clear and faith-filled reflection on why each of us should make a pledge to the BLA, Let us “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy.”

Every Life is a Gift

Respect Life Ministry. A big THANK YOU to our fellow parishioners who braved the snow to attend the annual March for Life in Washington D.C. and to the parishioners who supported the cause with your prayers and finances! The next meeting of the St. Joseph Respect Life Ministry will be this Thursday, February 11; 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm in room 205. All parishioners are welcome; please join us! Lenten Observance – Catholics 14 years and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, adult Catholics (18-59 years) are also asked to fast – that is, limit their food to a simple full meal and two lesser meals. Each Lenten season invites us to grow in our faith as we prepare to celebrate the great Feast of Easter. Please consider including one or more of the opportunities above as part of your Lenten observance.
