MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Lent 2016

Peace and good! Saint Francis of Assisi offers us five elements of penitential spirituality to reflect upon in the opening of his "Earlier Exhortation to the Brothers and Sisters of Penance" and the Prologue of the Friars’ Rule. I believe these elements capture the challenges of the Season of Lent and the Jubilee of Mercy. As we enter into the Church this Lent, you will be greeted by Francis’ five elements of penitential spirituality on the outdoor banners. The five elements include:

• love of God • love of neighbor • reception of the Eucharist • hatred of sin • worthy fruits of penance

Adding to Saint Francis’ insights, Pope Francis shares the following challenges for us to reflect upon in his Message for Lent 2016:

The season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listen- ing to God’s word and by practicing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy – counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer – we touch more directly our own sinfulness. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can re-ceive the gift of realizing that they too are poor and in need. God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn.

Our local Bishop, Bishop Loverde, echoes Pope Francis’ words and invites each of us to reflect upon our embrace of the works of mercy and our support of the Bishop Lenten Appeal (BLA). As we celebrate this Jubilee of Mercy and Lenten Season, let us “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy.” In the peace of Francis of Assisi,

During Lent, in addition to the daily 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Masses, Stations of the Cross will be on Fridays at 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. in Spanish.

The Lenten Rules for Fast and Abstinence are: 1) Lent is to be observed by Catholics as a special season of prayer, penance, and works of charity. 2) Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the most important penitential days of the liturgical year. They are days of both fast and abstinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of absti-nence. 3) The rules for fasting are that only one full meal a day can be taken. Two small meals, ‘sufficient to maintain strength,’ are allowed but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals breaks the fast, but drinking liquids does not. The rule of fasting obliges Catholics from 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year. 4) Abstinence refers to refraining from eating meat. The rule of abstinence binds all Catholics age 14 years and old-er. 5) The substantial observance of the laws of fast and absti-nence is a serious obligation. Those whose work or whose health would be impaired are excused from fasting and ab-staining.

THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR OF THE WEEK

Dear Parishioners:

Peace and good! The 40 days of Lent provide each of us with a special time for prayer, charity and spiritual growth. I share the following opportunities which our parish is providing to celebrate this season. Daily Mass – Monday through Friday – 6:30 am; 8:00 am; and 12:15 pm. Saturday – 8:00 am. The Sunday Masses follow the normal parish schedule.

Wednesday Evening of Eucharistic Adoration: 6:30 – 8:15 pm. The evening will consist of: exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:30 pm; “The Light Is On For You” (individual confessions from 6:30 – 7:30 pm); Night Prayer and Benediction at 8:00 pm.

Stations of the Cross – Every Friday of Lent at 7:00 p.m., there will be an opportunity to pray the Stations of the Cross. Please note that on Friday, February 26th, the Boy Scouts will host a Fish Fry in the Parish Hall. Father Tom will celebrate the Stations of the Cross – The Stations of Mercy by Pope Francis at 7:00 pm in the Church.

Stations of the Cross in Spanish – Every Friday of Lent at 8:00 p.m., there will be an opportunity to pray the Stations of the Cross in Spanish.

Lenten Penance Service – Wednesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm, we will hold our Lenten Penance Service. Saint Lucy Food Drive – March 5-6, 2016. The food drive is sponsored by the Men’s Society and Knights of Columbus. They will be collecting the food items after all the Masses.

Lenten Observance – Catholics 14 years and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, adult Catholics (18-59 years) are also asked to fast – that is, limit their food to a simple full meal and two lesser meals. Each Lenten season invites us to grow in our faith as we prepare to celebrate the great Feast of Easter. Please consider including one or more of the opportunities above as part of your Lenten observance.
