. Care for Children and the Poor Jesus had a special concern for children and the poor. This is evident in the gospel of Luke in this year of Sunday readings. Our parishes extend that love of Christ’s children and the poor in many ways.

Our Children. First I ask for your prayers for Pope Francis who is conven-ing bishops from around the world this month to address the serious issue of protecting children. Expectations are many and very high, as are the

challenges of trying to manage a response in a global Church of over one billion Catholics. Next I want to tell you about some initiatives that we are taking to provide for the children in our parishes. Last week we celebrated Catholic Schools and I wrote to you what Saint John's School and others can do to bring up children in an environment of faith and love. Both of our parishes have religious education from grade one through ten. We have competent leaders in Dawn Alves, Karen Hinton and Lisa Trainor. They are extremely dedicated in bringing children closer to Jesus and the Church. They work closely with our priests to connect what happens in homes and the classroom to worship. An example of this is the new Children's Liturgy of the Word once a month when families come together to the 10 AM Family Mass and children go to a place nearby for their own Scrip-ture readings and homily adapted to the young. The success of all these efforts depends on the support and participation of parents who, as we remind them at their child's baptism, are the first and most influential teachers of the child in the ways of faith. We need to reach our teens in a special way because their age presents great challenges. They are going through a time of profound personal growth. These days they are confronted with very troubling new re-alities such as the messages they get from the internet and social media. More and more teens today suffer from anxiety and depression for a number of reasons. And so we need parents and all of us who care about our youth to work together in more effective ways than we have. It's not just about losing them from our church; it's about them losing life itself.

To build up our ministry to youth, our parishes have joined together to bring on a new staff person dedi-cated to youth. Jessica Keefe has joined our pastoral staff as Youth Ministry Coordinator. Her job title signals what we know must happen for us to serve youth: we must all work together: clergy, catechists and parents. Jessica comes with an impressive back-ground working as a youth minister in parishes in Framingham and Dracut. She is with us for some hours and will be able to give more time as she con-cludes other work she is doing. Please welcome her as you meet her. Pray for our youth and for all who serve them. Also keep in your prayers Father Kevin and the teens and adults who are going with him on a Youth Service Trip to our sister parish in the DR during the school vacation.

The Poor. Poverty has many faces. Where we see it is often in those who come to us for help. Our Saint Vincent de Paul Society has a hot line so that calls made to us by people seeking help for food or other immediate needs are referred to them. The Society as a whole is observing its 150th anniversary. Our own groups have a long and wonderful

history of charitable works. St. John's began a food pantry ten years ago and on the last Sunday of every month they give out lots of food to those who come. When we began the Year of Mercy at the call of Pope Francis, we opened the doors of St. John's renovated hall to the homeless. Pat Adam has developed a mul-tidimensional Outreach Program to those who come to lunches for the homeless. Her program involves many volunteers. More than meals served with care, the outreach includes helping people find jobs and housing. A computer room serves to help our guests have access to some of the resources that are availa-ble, or to make contacts for help through the internet. In Peabody, there is a task force for the homeless that looks at the many sides of homelessness. Seeing a need for an emergency shelter in our city, St. John's was approached to help. An unusual ordinance limits emergency shelters to houses of worship. We stepped up to the plate and now in severe weather (eg below 15 degrees) we open our hall to a group who set up cots and oversee the shelter. Heartfelt thanks to all who extend hands and hearts to our brothers and sis-ters in such need!

God bless! Fr. John

A não-santidade é a causa do nosso sofrimento.

PARISH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

"They will know we are Christians by our…."How will they know you are a Christian? by the theology you know, your

home, your church attendance, your expressed morality or way in which you serve Him? Jesus said, “By THIS everyone will

know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13:35, He said this in the context of a moment when he was

doing something so shocking, even his closest followers could not understand it, but it showed the full extent of his love; he washed the disciple's feet. This was love, demonstrated by

hospitality before the Passover meal. He didn’t have to do it. Yet that is the nature of hospitality; unforced acts of love.

Hospitality in the Greek translates from the combination of two words: philo (love) and xenos (stranger), or literally, to love

the stranger. Join us and meet the stranger who we are called to love. Come and see the Alpha Program and own your Chris-

tianity- Listen, break bread and enjoy a light meal, and then share how you felt about what you heard.

Join us for the Alpha Program on February 7th at 6:30PM in the

Fr. Dan Spiritual Life Center at St. Thomas Parish. Or us in the morning following the

PARENTS: Come to our 10 AM Mass! These are our Family Masses for all kinds of families.

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.

All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little

ones to see and hear what is going on in the sanctuary.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”

To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encourage-ment to them and to their parents.

NEW! On the following Sundays, our parishes will offer a Children's Liturgy of the Word at our 10 AM Family Masses for all children in grades 1 through 6. Children from both public and Catholic schools are invited.

Dates for Children's Liturgy of the Word (in both parishes):

March 31, and April 14, 2019.

On these Sundays, children will come with family to Mass on these days at 10AM. * Children will leave the main church after the opening prayer. * They will go to the chapel or church hall to hear and learn about the Scripture readings in a way they can understand. * They will return to their families in church at the offertory.

Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or Completing Your Sacraments?

Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Do you have a family member or friend who is curious about the

Catholic Faith? Are you already Baptized, but haven’t received First Holy

Communion or Confirmation?

Throughout the year, we offer sessions in which we discuss the basic practices and teachings of the Church. We also read scripture together and consider difficult issues of the Faith. At the Easter Vigil, partici-pants may step forward to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, and/or

Eucharist and Confirmation, and are welcomed into the Church. We hope you will consider joining us on your faith journey. Even if

you feel you are not ready, or have questions or reservations about the Catholic Church, we welcome you. There is no pressure or “recruiting,” and we promote open and honest discussion.

To learn more about these sessions (RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults),

please contact Fr. John MacInnis at 978-531-0002.
