CCD NEWS: Sunday CCD classes will not meet Jan 5. Sunday classes resume Jan 12. Tuesday classes resume Jan 7. FIRST CONFESSION & COMMUNION 2020: Mark your calendars! First confessions will be cele-brated on Saturday, February 29, and the Mass of First Holy Communion will be on Saturday, May 2 (10:00am), or Sunday, May 3 (12:30pm) for those who wish to receive in the Extraordinary Form. LITURGICAL CATECHESIS: Today, the Church celebrates the Epiphany of the Lord. The Greek epipháneia means “appearance/manifestation,” and in the Eastern Churches, the feast is known as The-ophany (“manifestation of God”), where it is a celebration of the Baptism in the Jordan. In the Roman Church, we identify the Epiphany with the arrival of the Three Kings and our Lord’s manifestation to the

Gentiles. Today’s collect prays: “O God, who on this day revealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star, grant in your mercy that we, who know you already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of your sublime glory.” The Prayer over the Offering likewise references the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. However, few know that buried with-in our liturgical texts is the fact that Epiphany is really a celebration of three epiphanies of Jesus. At Vespers, the Magnificat anti-phon prays: “Today the Bridegroom claims his bride, the Church, since Christ has washed her sins away in Jordan’s waters; the Magi hasten with their gifts to the royal wedding; and the wedding guests rejoice, for Christ has changed water into wine, allelu-ia.” Indeed, Epiphany is the celebration of the coming of the Magi, the Baptism of Jesus, and the Wedding at Cana! In 1955, Pius XII transformed the Octave of the Epiphany (Jan13) into the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, perhaps weakening in the popular mind the multifaceted nature of Epiphany. In a sermon on the Epiphany, St Peter Chrysologus (AD 380-450), having spoken of the manifestations of Christ’s divinity to the Magi and in the Jordan, concludes: “Today Christ works the first of his signs from heaven by turning water into wine…But the water still had to be changed into the sacrament of his blood, so that Christ might serve cups of pure wine from the vessel of his Body for the people to drink, in order to fulfill the words of the prophet: ‘And how splendid is your cup which intoxicates!’” (Sermon 160). Let us then cherish each holy Communion as a renewal of the Epiphany for each one of us.

Next Council Membership Meeting, Jan 8th This is our time to review and plan our upcoming sup-port of the people of our parish and community. We start at 7:30pm to allow attendance at the 6:30pm Mass. March for Life - Friday Jan 24 Mark your calendars! Iron Sharpens Iron For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man. ~ St. Paul (Col 3:14-16) 2020 Membership Dues Timely payment of your annual dues by January 31st of each year is required to remain a member of the Council in good standing.
